Am I missing something here? I'm the "tech guy" in my family but I've never soft hacked anything else than a Wii

I have to make a 2DS run 3DS backups, I will only have it in hands for less than a day, it's for a 5yo kid that I litteraly see twice a year.

I just want it to be foolproof I've never hacked a 3ds and I really don't have much time to take care of this (exams). Especially if it requires some kind of maintenance after a system update (I don't even know if the kid uses online). And I definitely don't want to be held accontable if something goes wrong.

Didn't soft modded 3ds got blocked after an update this summer? this is the kind of stuff I really don't have the time to take care of

What are the risks of using sky3ds or an R4? (also wich one is the best) to play 3DS roms instead of a Softhack.

Everyone telling me on reddit to hack the 3ds feels like people telling you to switch to linux because it's better. How much better is it? The parents don't care about the cost, and I just want the simplest and most reliable solution.

Any advice is appreciated

Thank you

First of all gateway/sky3ds/stargate are the only flashcart that play 3ds roms. The R4 only plays ds games not 3ds.

Secondly the 3ds even on the latest system firmware can be hacked for cfw totally free of charge. Now for the benifits of cfw

1. Unlike flashcarts cfw is region free

2. Games can be played online without any additional work.

3. Built in cheat support

4. With cfw you can then install twighlight menu which can run ds roms without need of a ds flashcart.

5. All games displayed on the home menu

There are many more advatages.

Disadvantages of flashcarts.

1. Not region free.

2. Can only be played online with the use of a private header which must be obtained from a ligit 3ds game cart.

3. With sky3ds only one game is shown at a time you need to press a button on the cart to move to next game. So can take a while to scroll through to the game you want.

4. Massively overpriced.
Plus many more disadvantages.

Installing cfw is easy and as long as you can follow instructions is pretty much safe.

Hello there,
  • For the hack of your 2DS, go to 3ds.hacks.guide
  • The only things that get patched are homebrew exploits, if you have a CFW, you're fine... I don't remember why Luma broke after an update and needed himself an update though... (If Nintendo can "patch" it , you'll just need to replace a file on your SDCard...)
  • You can get banned from using Online, the risks are very small however it can happens, especially if you cheat IG or if you didn't hide what games you are playing...
  • Depending of the FW of the console, you might need a special R4 to install a CFW... (EDIT: There is now a softmod method on newer FWs but it could be patched someday...)

  • DO NOT BUY A SKY3DS! It's way too expensive and does way less than a CFW, the only utility i see it have is if you have more than 300 Games on your homemenu...
  • R4s can only play DS Games (except a special "R4 3DS GOLD" which could play DS & 3DS games [DO NOT BUY IT, IT IS OBSOLETE AND WAS A CLONE OF THE GATEWAY CARDS]).
  • If you want a flashcart, i will recommend an R4...

There has been zero proof that not hiding you games in you friend list get you banned.

The vast majority of members on this site are in agreement that the only ways to get banned online is

1. Cheating online
2. Playing any game online before it's official realese (which is not really a problem anymore)
3. Using a stolen credit card in the eshop.

You can get banned if you have some "friends" from Nintendo in your Friends List... Other than that, i agree it basically has 0 chances to get you banned.

I suspect edited saves. I guess giving myself a bunch of credits in Pokemon Picross counts as cheating though.
