Hello,

So I am so new to ps3 hacking, please forgive any ignorance i may display (not really helping the girls dont play video games stigma:( ). Anyways, Ive been reading that its now possible to exploit a ps3 that is on 4.82 and softmod it. I would like to play backups from a usb hard drive if possible. If I can do this could someone possibly point me in the right direction for what exactly to do to get to just 4.82 and run the exploit, then which cfw i should get (best one/easiest one to install) ? I REALLY appreciate any help given. I was so ready to update my ps3 so I could download a few games from psn but something told me to just double check if there was an exploit out and sure enough there is! hopefully anyways.. Again, I appreciate any help! Thank you

(4.82 firmware official .............. thats all you need ................ i got a "WD Blue 500 gig hdd from best buy, 2.5 inch" .............. format that you need a ps3 controller, a cheap fake/clone one will work just fine ........... place the "4.82 firmware update on your usb stick (no bigger than 32 gigs), in "ps3/update/" folder, then the ps3 will format your hdd for your ps3, even if you are on 4.82 firmware, you still need the 4.82 firmware for the update)

........................
create a "user" account only one, no more, name it want you want
........................

after that your read to play backups on your ps3, follow a guide for "HAN" you'll activate your ps3 from "sign up" on psn from your ps3 for "games", then, you won't have to sign in anymore to psn, your finished! .................... get a cup of coffee and have a few hours time to spare, all done!

(you need your usb stick, not just for formatting, but to transfer a "package list" of games you have on your computer, so when you connect your ps3 to your router that your pc is connected to, it can read the list of games you have on your pc ready to transfer)

(your using "official firmware", no risk of brick, no damage to your ps3 by trying to connect hardware to do a hard flash, nothing like that ............. need "NPS Broswer", some disk backups don't work)

Offline install 4.82 https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/4.82_CEX

Depending on your model you can install CFW or use HAN, there are guides in the appropriate forums

https://www.psx-place.com/forums/PS3Xploit/

You'll need to visit http://ps3xploit.com/ on your ps3.

It's been a while since I had to use it, the procedure is a little complex and the guides might take a while to figure out for a first time user.

If you have vulnerable bootldr then you can install CFW and you only need to trigger the exploit once, if your PS3 has lv0.2 then you do need to trigger the exploit on every boot (which is like wii-u) but it's also nowhere near as good as CFW.

You can check your console model number on here https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/SKU_Models#Retail_Models (all FAT PS3 can have CFW installed, slims up to 2100 can, some 2500 can, anything later including super slims can't).

You can host the exploit locally, so you don't actually need internet access at all.

Thanks alot guys. Much appreciated. Serial its a 2001b
Great, all 20xx models are flashable (that is, they have the old metldr and therefore a minimum version less than 3.55)

Install 4.82 from USB
Use the PS3Xploit NOR flash writer (either HDD or USB variant at your choice) to make the console accept CFW: yes you will need to connect your console to a network (although you can self-host if having it connected to the internet is a problem)
Install a 4.82 or higher CFW of your choice from USB, as if it was an official update

I have a vague feeling that installing rebug either required you to do it from recovery mode or you had to go to a different CFW first (I can't remember which of those it was).

I personally use REBUG, so that would be my recommendation. But I remember it was a pain to install it the first time.

That's probably when the newest Rebug was 4.81 (with not even Rebug Lite 4.82 existing), so you typically installed Ferrox, enabled QA (something I recommend to do anyway, better to have a persistent downgrade option than not to have it), and then downgraded to 4.81

I don't think it was a downgrade issue as I also had trouble installing rebug after putting in a blank hard drive, even though the console was previously running rebug.

There is something about REBUG PUP syscon that is different to all others, someone did a hacked version one time that allowed you to install it easier. Though I wouldn't use it.

Thanks for the help. Sorry for the late reply. Anyways do you have any suggestions on which cfw? Obviously would like the easiest to use and most user friendly

If you are a "plain gamer" anything with Cobra will do (I personally use Ferrox); Rebug has a lot of advanced features probably not of interest, though you don't have to use them either...
