So, I'm thinking of getting a PS3. But I'm not too sure which to get. Like I know for near certain that the Slims I have available to me would be hackable. (There's a 120GB and a 250GB one, both got discontinued or something before 3.5.5 so I'd be safe if I got them I think) Primary issue is I would still want to play some PS2 games, so the fats seem like a nice option. Plus no real uncertainty about the hackability. And, being someone who likes to save where he can is nearly half the price of the Slims. Though some of the more high profile PS2 exclusives I care about, (Kingdom Hearts, MGS and God of War primarily) I believe all got HD Collections on the PS3. Though I'm certain KH got multiple on the PS4. And when I get my PS3, where should I start? There doesn't appear to be any nice looking website with a straight forward guide like the websites for hacking Nintendo consoles and most of the guides seem to be videos which I'm kinda opposed to due to them getting outdated frequently. Though the scene doesn't look like it's developing all that much, actually how is the scene? I doesn't look all too active though I am probably wrong on that. I guess I'll leave it at that for now as I just wanna hear what people think and all.

Go for a slim, a fat console is only worth it if you get an old 60GB model that can do native PS2 and preferably one that someone has reballed to use leaded solder to avoid it failing under normal use.

Never go for a fat. Power delivery is worse and thanks to that overheats much faster. Either way seeing you're from Ireland '' Europe never got the fully PS2 working ps3 fat but used emulation to do achieve the same ''

This is what I have, it runs great and the noise level is on par with my 2 slim consoles. I use it as my main console now

BE AWARE: he does update them to the latest FW, I got mine for CFW a month after 4.83 came out and it did not even occur to me that I would need to have it hard downgraded. That is why it is my main console and my slim consoles are my CFW consoles.

Would be fine if they reballed it before main use, with some fan control modification it run well.

Issue is I can't guarantee that that'll be the case. I use a store for most of my console buying needs due to me being able to trade stuff in and such. And I don't know if they refurbish their consoles at all or anything like that. Particularly reballing and new thermal paste.

That does not matter in this case since the reballed console is a CHEHA01 so it is the U.S. 60GB model

I can confirm that by putting a region A Blu-ray in.

Importing from the US and especially a heavy big package like that costs a fortune to Europe
Correct. Taxes, shipping cost and general importing costs would fuck me over when most of my money is from the trade ins anyway meaning I kinda NEED to use the store I was planning to purchase from. Also we Irish folk have different plugs than you US folks meaning I'd need to get a plug converter as well.

Is it true that PS3's on the latest firmware are impossible to mod or run homebrew on?

If that's the case I may be fucked depending on if the store employees update the systems or not.

As I can't solder or hardmod for the life of me (too young and haven't held a solder in my life, neither do I know how to use one. Even opening a console is too much for me as I don't even have a fucking screwdriver.)

4.82 is the only hackable firmware at the moment. Storehax works at later firmwares but 4.82 is the latest firmware that is exploitable

Just get a slim but make sure it's one that you can downgrade

I mean, I heard you can downgrade them, but it's a royal pain in the ass. I haven't really followed the PS3 scene to be honest.

PS3 PROs/CONs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_models
Fat: native PS2 hardware (4x USB port models), overheat easily/high-maintenance/loud fan
Slim: emulate PS2, do not overheat easily/low-maintenance/quiet fan

PS2 PROs/CONs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2_models
Fat: native PS2 on HDD, do not overheat easily/low-maintenance/quiet fan
Slim: native PS2 on USB/network, do not overheat easily/low-maintenance/quiet fan

PS2 HD remasters on PS3

Reballing does not work effectively. Reflow would be as effective, but still futile.
