Helluu guys!
I bought my Nintendo switch last year, and haven't used it since then (strange I know) :O
All I do know is that it's in firmware 3.0.1.

I have been going back and forth to buy SX OS pro, but the ""issue"" here is that we have to use a jig everytime we want to boot emuNAND...
I do know that AutoRCM exist, which makes it possible to boot to emuNAND without any jig, but I've heard bad things about it and how it drains the battery...

The only reason I see using the jig is a ""problem"" is because I know that someone, either my little brother, one of my younger cousins or someone else will just boot it up to sysNAND and update the shit out of it as soon as a update notification pops up, just because they don't know how to use the jig :)

So how close are we to get boot the switch without using a jig :)

We are pretty much there. Just not publicly.
But if you want to be "jigless", you can go with atmosphere and autoRCM. Because ams 0.8.4 can properly shutdown with autoRCM and reboot back to CFW. So all you need to do is push the power button and push a payload. Then it's just like without autoRCM.

There's no real reason to purchase the SX OS. Atmosphere has all of the important features of SX OS, and it's free. Atmosphere also supports 7.0.x and has better support.

As long as you don't accidentally leave it in RCM, there are no battery drain issues with AutoRCM. If you leave your Switch in sleep mode when you're not using it, which is highly recommended anyway, then you definitely won't have any problems.

The only reason I see using the jig is a ""problem"" is because I know that someone, either my little brother or one of my younger cousins it someone else will just boot it up to sysNAND and update the shit out of it as soon as a update notification pops up, just because they don't know how to use the jig :)
Keep your sysNAND disconnected from the internet.

Important is relative, although I really wish SXOS would steal implement the kip/plugin system.

I agree with everyone here about using atmosphere. most important thing is do NAND and boot1/0 backup before running CFW.

You're right. It all depends on what a person wishes to accomplish. For the average user, running homebrew and loading NSP-installed games suffice.

If you use emuNAND then you don't have to worry about accidental updates. Just keep your emuNAND offline so it can't be updated, and keep your sysNAND clean for online use.

I would say emuNAND is a pretty important feature that Atmosphere is missing.

Definitely wanted and useful feature, but not an important one. It is not required for anything ;)
(Maybe I am the only one who sees it this way)

hope this helps.. I'm similar to theasker in that I had a 3.0.2 firmware switch in storage, however I had ALREADY bought my SX OS licence back in July 2018 - I'm happy with what I have, but again I'll stress I had already bought my licence.

So *IS* SX OS worth purchasing RIGHT NOW?

Without official firmware support for 7.x it is a risky investment.

so comparisons:

SX OS:

Pros:

XCI files - can mount and PLAY XCI files direct from USB (no need to copy to SD card).
- No need to install each game, just mount and they run - just like inserting a cartridge.
- XCI files do not install tickets so *POTENTIALLY* are not as detectable as NSP files.

USB storage - NSP files can be installed to SD card direct from USB storage, no need for PC. Useful on long journeys or selection from a large collection on the go.

EmuEMMC / emuNAND - makes it potentially possible to dodge a banned console due to no records kept in system NAND (online play under emuNAND not recommended however).
- different official firmware versions can be installed in system and emuNAND (no fuses are burned)
but difficult and the setup is a bit janky. not my experience with emuNAND creation in SX OS 2.5.3 was a few button presses and it was done.

Cons:

No official firmware 7.0 support as yet. Without this you can only use any of the existing 2000 or so titles available currently. NOTE that you CAN install titles and updates requiring firmware 7.x, as long as they are not encrypted with 7.x (as of 3/3/19 no titles are).

Costs money - about the same price as a 200GB SD card for the jig, the dongle and the SX OS licence.
- about the same price as a 128GB SD card for just the SX OS licence.

Cannot use KIPs advanced features - like custom kernel modules (Overclocking module, etc)

MUST use the jig and payload injector on every cold boot (personally, if you're powering off completely regularly then why?).

Free CFW:

Pros:

Official firmware 7.0 support and most likely ongoing support for the future.

No cost - just the included cost of your SD card for it to be installed on.

Can use KIPs advanced features - like custom kernel modules (Overclocking module, etc).

Can boot into CFW from Auto RCM - please note that auto-RCM has been extensively discussed as being potentially detectable by Nintendo and thus a bannable 'offence'.

Cons:

No XCI mounting.

No USB storage.

No emuEMMC / emuNAND.

Keep in mind that BOTH options allow installing of NSP titles to SD card and systemNAND (or emuNAND if using SX OS) via USB cable and NUT or SX server.

Both systems allow use of homebrew and backing up save games to alternate computers / storage for safe keeping.

That's not true at all. I use autoRCM and a mod chip. You dont have to use a jig on every cold boot.

sigh.. mod chips are essentially dongles but they're built into the Switch and can be used by all CFW.

auto RCM can also be used by all CFW but there has been a lot of discussion about it being detectable and therefore might be a cause for banning in future.

It's a meme that even SciresM uses.

and like all memes it's had it's 15 seconds of fame and isn't amusing any more. the issue is by stating a date, there are those NOT aware it's a meme and take it as fact - especially if it does come from someone as widely respected as SciresM.

I vaguely remember what a jig and payload are for with the current state of Atmosphere.
I recommend you do the same cause there is only one last step away from permanent CFW.
And that's power on to CFW without injecting a payload.

that was only fairly recent, short term memory loss maybe?

but it will be a nice feature when fully implemented.. might even make me upgrade my sysNAND firmware from 3.0.2

Usb loading is another major plus for me....

yes and USB support is not just for NSP and XCI - it's nice to have a large ROM collection for emulators.. or even stick some MKV files on a USB HDD to watch when travelling etc.

Why TX have emunand support and XCI loading but atmosphère don't ?

I believe that SciresM said that is easy (xci) to do but nobody does it
