was playing some Castlevania Aria of Sorrow on my CFW 3DS, got mad at the final boss and slapped the 3DS screen, it instantly turned off. Now it only powers on, no audio, charging light shows when charging but no orange light. I’ve tried about everything (taking sd card out, taking battery out, etc.). It also won’t respond to key combos such as holding start and the power button. I’ve heard just having the power on and letting it completely run dead may help but is there anyway I can do something using my SD card and CFW to force it to power on? I really hope it’s not a screen issue since I don’t have the proper tools to open the 3DS and poke around inside of it. Any help is appreciated.

Can you boot Recovery Mode, GodMode9, and Luma3DS v9.1 configuration?
I’ve tried the key combo of (L+R+A+Up while holding on power which is recovery I assume), I’ve tried holding start and power and I’ve tried holding select and power, none have worked. This kind of terrifies me.

As of right now, I am letting the battery run dead. Is this a wise move or could this lead to future issues?

My best guess is that you damaged or disconnected one of the major components or flex cables within the upper section: camera, top lcd, and/or speaker assembly.

For severe cases like yours where the system isn't responsive, I recommend getting a used but known functioning spare n3DSXL. Disassemble the two and swap in the broken unit's motherboard, pray for that mobo hasn't hard bricked, backup the saves + extdata for all your games the first chance you get, and dump all your titles as CIAs.

Edit - You can try fixing parts piecewise once you've secured all your personal data in decrypted, backedup form.

Alright. How can I backup everything?

Should I bother running the battery dry and then charging it?

You need to get your current n3DSXL's motherboard in a bootable state. To reduce the risk of accidentally damaging that board any further from guesswork trying to repair/replacement parts, the mobo swap is IMO the safest path. It does have the drawback where you have to do your due diligence being careful of not hard bricking that substituted n3DSXL. It is easier relative to trying to mess with the original n3DSXL flex cable components; they wrap around inside the right hinge. Very tricky stuff.
If worse comes to worst where that motherboard is beyond salvaging, you will need to look in your current inventory for that system's movable.sed if you kept a copy of its essential.exefs when you first hacked that n3DSXL. You may have made something called the SysNAND *.bin image, but that file is encrypted and can't be peered in retrieving that *.sed. Without that movable.sed, there's no way to decrypt and recovery the contents from your Nintendo 3DS folder.

Should I bother running the battery dry and then charging it?
No. If the battery trick where you remove it, held the (POWER) button for 30 seconds, pressed the button several more times, and tried booting the n3DSXL with and without SD card didn't work, draining the battery won't make difference.

Would a Dynamite Screwdriver: #00 Phillips DYN2826 open the back case to access the motherboard? And is there anything I can to with the motherboard right then and there to perhaps fix it because all this other stuff sounds really complicated and expensive (for the substitute n3DSXL)

Your brick doesn't seem typical as it doesn't have talltale signs like popping noise (bad speaker assembly) and HOME Menu BSoD with sound but screens still work in Recovery Mode (camera assembly). I'm guessing it's the top LCD that the 3DS mobo can't (properly) communicate with, so it just hangs with black screens. BTW, these systems have little to no failsafe redundancies. Should any one of the major components fail, the 2DS/3DS will boot incorrectly or not at all.

Yes, Phillips #00 is the correct size for those back screws. Be careful not to strip those screws. For any that are stripped, get replacements (check eBay).
One of the mistakes people can make is trying to repair a system without having replacement parts ready. If you start tinkering with suspected components that aren't obviously broken, you may end up making matters worse damaging other pieces through repeated ribbon disconnect/reinsertion (weakens ZIF connectors) or accidentally knocking off, scraping, or disconnecting those tiny SMD and PCB traces (like cutting a nerve).

I’m just curious do you have a discord or something so I when I do get proper parts I could show you what’s up with it?

I'm not a discordapp user. I lurked before in some of the Homebrew related channels but that's about it. Call me old school, but that form of communication I've never gotten used to.

I’m just curious. I’m obviously going to try and fix this on my own, but let’s say I can’t. How much do you think it would cost to send it to a repair shop?

In the past, I recommended people bring their 3DS systems to uBreakiFix as they're one of the few US based franchises that specialize in electronic repairs, but they're only found in major city hubs. I'm not sure if they take commissions on our handhelds because many places do not want to deal fixing those three parts because that hinge often times will break the flex cables getting them out and back in.

You should try your luck with Nintendo warranty by playing it off that it randomly died on you. Do not mention custom firmware and hitting it. I'm not sure if Nintendo will send back your exact n3DSXL in fixed condition (you might end up getting a replacement), or they'll find signs of hacking and/or physical abuse where they'll void the warranty and return it unfixed.

There is one other option. The US eBay seller wiigotem revolves his entire business around selling replacement 3DS parts and offering repair service.
The exact listing for n3DSXL; there are n2DSXL, n3DS, o3DXL, etc. (Need to choose the correct page).

I don’t trust Nintendo. They’re gonna see it’s cfw and get pissed off. I’ll the guy’s repair shop or whatever; but I’m getting a screwdriver on Thursday so we’ll just wait and see. I’ll keep this thread posted about the results

Hey I just got the screwdriver today and I can’t open the backcase! Was this the right one? http://imgur.com/ULyWI4M

Except for models like the n2DSXL that uses Tri-Y screws, Phillips #00 screwdriver is the correct size to disassemble the 3DS systems. A "3DS" term search in Amazon reviews for your exact screwdriver have stated it works in taking theirs apart.
If yours isn't taking them off despite some effort, that means yours is a dud with poor manufactured tolerance. You should desist using it, return it for a refund, and get a better screwdriver. Frustrating but not worth the risk and trouble of stripping or wearing out the screw crossheads.

Edit - I would like to add that your Imgur posted picture, it looks too blunt to be a #00. I think you got a mislabelled screwdriver.

What if by some chance the screws are slightly stripped?

Here’s what the screws look like. I’ll let you judge them.

If the crossheads are damaged enough, you will need to use a wide rubber band for extra torquing grip or drill them out if the screwdriver can no longer properly seat in the slots. Worn out screws should be trashed and replaced with a fresh set.

Oh dear... Those look bad. You would be look at drilling away their heads. Once the bottom shell half is pulled out, there's using a piler to twist off the threads or shaft pieces.

The safest approach in drilling would be manually with your hand using a drill bit. If the screws are soft enough, you can use or sacrifice a Phillips #00 screwdriver as a makeshaft drill. Use a magnet or chewed up gum to clean off the ensuing shavings.

Hey, I don't know if you caught my late edit in the last-last reply, but I don't think your screwdriver is an actual Phillips #00, or if it is, it's a shittily made one. Dude, I'm sorry your repairs aren't going accordingly to plan.

What type of drill would I need? This is just freaking crazy.

Hey, I gotta go on errand to Home Depot soon to pick up some critter garden treatment. I looked for my set of drill bits to see which would be small enough to drill those screws but couldn't find it. This actually works out as I can take my n3DSXL and check if there are any sizes small enough drill. Post back later.
