Dark Souls 1 mod "Daughters of Ash" adds new events, story, and gameplay mechanics

vkClq34.png

Though Dark Souls Remastered released last year and was called the "definitive" way to play, a team of modders had been loyally working on the original release of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition all throughout 2017 and 2018 to create their ideal version of the first game. Over 1000 hours of development was put into Dark Souls: Daughter of Ash, an expansive modpack that overhauls the game to add a multitude of new features, weapons, items, lore, and secrets. According to Grimrukh, one of the creators of the mod, this is what they imagine what Dark Souls 1 would have been, if FromSoftware had more time to develop the game. You can grab the modpack, which is currently at version 1.8, below at NexusMods. For those that prefer Dark Souls: Remastered, there are plans to release a version of the modpack for that version as well, later this year.

  • New game progression
    • Forget what you know about exploring Lordran. New world-changing events, key items, and unexpected pathways await you.
  • New bosses and enemies
    • Triumph in new boss battles, most of which are designed to promote novel gameplay rather than sheer increased difficulty. Encounter new enemies on your journey – including enemies restored from cut content – and watch many old bosses and enemies behave in new ways.
  • New NPCs and storylines
    • Meet new characters with brand new questlines, which will intersect in numerous unpredictable ways as your journey continues. Even the stories of familiar characters may take unexpected turns.
  • New weapons, items, and mechanics
    • Discover new weapons with brand new abilities, many of which will require keen insights and careful consideration to master. Most existing equipment will not be exactly the way you remember.
  • Expanded lore
    • Learn more about Lordran's past from new item descriptions and gameplay events. (All new content is written to build upon the lore of the original game, rather than directly conflict with it.)
  • New secrets
    • Don't expect to come anywhere close to unveiling all of the game's hidden content in one or two play-throughs.

Finally, the day of reckoning has come.
It's a shame that I upgraded to the remastered version because it runs better on my PC and definitely looks better visually,
so i'd rather wait until they make a version for it instead..

I played a bit of this, and as a huge fan of Souls games...I don't like it really.

My biggest complaint with this mod is the absolute lack of direction as to where you're supposed to go in this new route the mod uses. And not just the usual Souls game lack of direction, it's even less so than that, as far as I can tell there are no messages that really help and none of the new items really mention anything either. I spent probably a good hour or two trying to figure out where you actually go in this route, managed to figure it out to a certain point but then I got stuck again, and once more have no idea where to go. As the mod currently stands, you'll need to use a progress route guide just to actually complete it.

I do like the general idea of the mod, and some of the new bosses are pretty dang neat, but as it stands it still needs a lot of work before I'd call it worth playing.

Prepare to Die Again, while doesn't change the progress route, is a pretty decent mod for Dark Souls 1 that I'd recommend to those looking for new life in the OG game. Adds some new enemies that were originally cut, changes up the location of some of the enemies, changes up some boss battles, and it's available for the Remastered version and for the original.

Seems that way. Which is fine with me. I still need to actually play Dark Souls.

I always marvel at stories like these. It motivates me to want to go back to college, so I can learn to do something amazing like this.
You don't really need to go to college to learn these skills and make mods, you can teach almost everything to yourself thanks to the internet and textbooks. Go to college if you intend to work in the industry and need the credentials and networking.

If you gonna post news about mods now, post news about good games, like recent neuro-hd for Max Payne, and not that desperate attempts to make broken mess a bit less broken.

I skipped Dark Souls Remastered because it seems like a rushed port which doesn’t do enough to fix the original’s problems or refine it. Now maybe I’ll buy it when I (someday) have a good PC.

Let the man go to college, dammit. Who cares about the reason?

Because it could save a lot of money. I'm not stopping him or saying don't go. Just saying that you don't need college to learn these skills. Online courses and self learning are a totally valid method if you're disciplined (keyword: disciplined). I trust he can figure out his own needs.

Title should be "Brawlers of Ash" since the modders doesn't care about the plot and
they added some items, monsters and weapons that didn't contribute to the lore.

Does this change the Bed of Chaos to not be FromSofts worst designed ever boss?

If so, it's a direct improvement over the original.

(Same goes for DS: PTDA, @Tom Bombadildo ?)
No idea for this mod because I haven't gotten that far at all, but PTDA did update the Bed of Chaos boss battle and it's SO much better than stock. No shitty platforming required at all. I really strongly suggest giving it a try.
