After 26 years of never hearing anything of this game, with this only being playable at California Extreme 2018, SegaSonic Bros. has finally been dumped and is now avalible to anyone. SegaSonic Bros. was a cancelled Sonic arcade game where you take control of 4 puzzle pieces that look like Sonic. With these puzzle pieces, you must create patterns to make blocks disappear. It's very interesting to see this game finally resurface after such a long time with having no information at all.
No download link will be provided, but doing a Google search will do it for you.

Clear gameplay footage can be found here:

Actually, it plays very different, I've never seen a puzzle game like this.
After I saw the gameplay, I was reminded of Soldam: Drop, Connect, Erase. It actually has similar (if not the same) gameplay to this in their trailer for it.

It seems that Soldam is actually a game series that has had a couple of releases in the past, so it's more likely that SegaSonic Bros was supposed to be a Soldam reskin (like what Mean Bean Machine is to Puyo Puyo) or a clone.

I can only call it "similar". Gameplay wise it's not the same. In SEGASonic Bros you have 3 colors and you must get one of these colors from a wall to wall or wall to floor. Only then you can get rid of blocks. There's also a chaos emerald power up that gets rid of all the blocks it's placed on, and that was the only similar thing I noticed from that trailer.

That's true, sorry for jumping to conclusions. I took some time today to look into various gameplay videos and in-depth descriptions of both games and the only things that are similar between them are the following:
  • You use and move/rotate 4 colored pieces at the same time.
  • There are 4 colors available.
    - SegaSonic Bros. has red, blue, yellow, and white.
    - Soldam has red, blue (purple in the Jaleco Mega System version), yellow, and green.
-- The original Soldam for the Game Boy only has a max of 3 colors and starts off with just two instead.
  • To clear pieces from the board you must make a horizontal line of a single different color than the pieces surrounding it.
    - In SegaSonic Bros., this is only 1 of many ways to clear away pieces. If you make a line, it will clear everything below it.
-- If you use a Chaos Emerald, it will clear everything that's on the same horizontal line and wipe out everything above it.
    - In Soldam, this seems to be the only way to do so.
-- You do this by changing the colors of pieces placed below (or surrounding that section of the board) by placing the desired color above, between, or beside them (sort of like Reversi). It's also possible to just place enough new pieces yourself.
Actually, SegaSonic Bros. has a max of 4 colors. According to Sonic Retro, the 4th color (white) only shows up once you reach level 30. You can see this around 9:54 in the video you posted in the OP. Also, the lines don't actually have to touch the wall or floors if you're able to make a loop of a single color.

Hence why it was canceled. Puzzle games didn't go well as Arcade games outside of Japan, unless it was Tetris.

Not to mention the game is evidently a very early thing. Since it doesn't even have Tails on it.

Sonic 1 lukewarm response ib Japan might also have to do something with it.

I thought it was Sega's/Sonic Team's Super Smash Bros. clone of Nintendo before they made SSB series. But it seems to another Tetris clone after Puyo Puyo and Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
