I would say no. For one, global economy is a complex thing. Now if you were to assume that every human being is dishonest and illegal then sure the ability to illegally obtain copyrighted material would destroy the system. But there is a vast majority of people who have no idea how to pirate and then there is a small minority of people with the intelligence to be illegal yet they are honest and legal (hence the intelligence, lol).

Another global example I could cite is the fact that the country of the United States pours in millions of dollars into drug research. Planning, making, testing on volunteers takes a lot of time/money/research. And at the end of the day -- sure -- it takes a few cents to manufacture the actual pill yet it is priced higher to compensate for the millions spend to GET TO THAT POINT. And now we get to the point: The bordering country of Mexico can also make these same FDA-approved pills for a few cents and with virtually zero red tape anyone can buy any drug they want. Point? Some Americans go to Mexico to buy cheap prescription drugs. Just "some," not all. Therefore the heavy lifters can continue their drug research in the US because most Americans buy the FDA-approved and manufactured medication legally -- even with the "SX Pro" of the cheap drug situation.

I have never heard that argument before, and from a search around nobody else is making it and no law would seem to support it (I am not seeing anybody worried about "piracy" of such things, border agents allow people through if they have a prescription and are under so much in terms of doses, there are insurers offering a service in the US to send people to Mexico to get them...).
It is generally seen that the US has no bargaining power, some odd choices of law and such that sees things be more "as much as we can get away with".

I think pirates are a much smaller group than they appear to be. Plus, they already patched out the vulnerability and have moved on.

Switch sales are through the roof. They are forecasting huge sales for 2019.

If you want to support devs, buy the game, rip it and sell it used so you get half your money back, support the sale, and give a person who wouldn't have purchased the game at full retail a chance to buy it legit.

No don’t, if the cert gets banned then you could be affecting an innocent person.

Let's just hope the Switch gets some decent titles any time soon....

The term piracy makes me yawn at the current "gen" of consoles.

I can't remember a console ever dying due to piracy.

Also manufacturers are no longer ever making losses on consoles hardware wise.

Piracy is relatively small on the Switch, especially with the newer Switch units being patched and the difficulties involved with modding a Switch. Now I'm not saying its hard to mod a Switch, but its no 3DS in regards to ease. Every time I reboot my Switch I have to slide my Jig and inject. Don't forget the issues with playing online with pirated games. There are barriers to entry and negatives for Switch modding and pirating. A typical consumer does not want to deal with most of the hassle.

I think that most of the people who pirate are probably people who would not buy the majority of games that they pirated. I bought a Switch after it was able to be modded. I would not have bought one otherwise. Since then, I've purchased 3 sets of Joycons, 3 pro controllers, 4 docks, 5 cases, a backpack, and now both of my kids have Switch consoles and Poke balls with 6-7 games each. Their consoles are not modded. They most likely would not have their own Switch consoles if I never purchased one for myself and warmed up to the console.

I remember a thread like this about how gateway was going to kill the 3ds back in 2012, and that resilient little bastard is somehow still chugging along into 2019

I doubt Dreamcast-levels of piracy will ever occur again, but I do feel that piracy may force devs into making shitty ("but-just-good-enough") games...imagine getting chibi FFXV over FFXV. Emphasis on that period.

Also, mobile games, everywhere.

You're not wrong, but it's easy to imagine a market of premodded units with preloaded games sold to those consumers who will throw their money at retail if there's no convenient alternative, which is what Nintendo are afraid of and the reason they're cracking down on security so hard.

As you implied though, pirates aren't part of the target audience. If they were, Nintendo wouldn't price their titles so absurdly high. As the average consumer keeps blindly accepting this business model, profit margins will remain insane and piracy beyond concern.

How many people do you think pirate games?

How many people do you think give Nintendo money for the console, joycons, other controllers/accessories, dock, charger, screen protector, online subscription, games, DLC?

Just because Nintendo is "losing" money on game piracy doesn't mean their way overpriced everything else (except online) isn't bringing in a lot of $$$

Also the people buying games outweigh pirates

Switch will live as long as other Nintendo consoles, will be way oversold, become cheap like the Wii, it's already flooded with shit games like the Wii was, it will live on like every other Nintendo console.

Your question is kinda broad so not sure if my answer makes any sense, but TX (or anyone else except Donald Trump/Nintendo) will not bring the switch to EoL

If you check those scummy pirate sites that require a like prior to downloading files, you can see most of them have about 8-9,000 likes. If you double that number, even triple it, and say that's the amount of people that are definitively pirating every single title that releases and WOULD have been guaranteed customers prior to backups, that's still just a drop in the bucket to Nintendo.

You think the Switch's online offerings are not overpriced?

As for "like every other Nintendo console" I still remember the DS, GBA, GB/GBC, NES and SNES, and to a lesser extent the gamecube as well. They played it a far different to the other things they have done where they were often enough lead/sole or otherwise competitive on the games front, had the third parties onboard and won or remained competitive within given regions.
