Slightly Mad Studios is working on a stand alone console

Slightly Mad Studios, the London-based studio behind Project CARS, apparently wants to be a direct competitor in the home console market. After teasing about the Mad Box on Twitter, the company's founder and CEO, Ian Bell, gave more information about this upcoming console, touting it as "the most powerful console ever built".

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Bell further detailed that “it will support most major VR headsets and those upcoming and the specs will be equivalent to a ‘very fast PC 2 years from now’. We’re in early talks with manufacturers of components so we can’t say much more right now other than we have the designs specced out in detail.”

“We plan to allow games from all developers, old and new. The ’new’ possibly being many of those that benefit from our completely free development engine,” Bell said. “It will be a stand alone console.”

“We think the industry is a little too much of a monopoly or a micro oligopoly,” he further added. “We think competition is healthy and we have the required hardware contacts to be able to bring something epic to fruition based on our designs.”

According to the Variety interview, Slightly Mad Studios will release images of early design builds in four to six weeks time and the console will ship in around three years time.

So what do you think? Is there a space for a fourth competitor in the home console market? Will you consider getting the Mad Box? Or will you wait for what Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have in store for their next console before deciding?

Is it slightly mad for me to think it will use physical media? It is a new concept after all to actually own something you buy nowadays.
Imaging spending money on this and then they close it after 3 years and the games use online drm...

This field has seen too much failed vaporware the last decade for such an announcement to grab my attention.
Nowadays all "new player in the market console announcements" give me zero hype.
I've seen it too many times. Steam Machine, Ouya, Coleco Chameleon, SouljaGame/s, etc.

I will hold my horses until I see a well supported product that sells.

People used to say this about the Switch no? That it won't succeed.

Well, but the switch has like 40 years of great research and development of games and hardware. Also ex 3DFX engineers and basically the pioneering in 3D technology. (the developer who coded Doom, the developer at Q-games that helped engineering the SuperFX chip, etc)

Anything nowadays that sells requires dedicated hardware, and something the competition hasn't done or does poorly. This is why is so hard to sell brand new game consoles.

This is going to bomb SO fucking hard. The only company I could ever see getting into the games console business, would be Sega, and that's not happening anytime in the near future.

It's all about the games. Make great games for it and people will buy the system. The concept is very interesting and I'm slightly excited to hear more info :D

In a world where all consoles became nothing but glorified PCs everyone with enough money and the ability to build "custom" PCs is able to launch a console I guess. We will see how it works out for them, but I'm not impressed by the little information we have yet...

I assume this Ian Bell is not the same one that did Elite all those years ago.

Anyway I will believe it when I see it. I don't know that these guys have the juice to make a device particularly worth noting here, and they did not mention anything I would care to pay attention to with regards to standards they look to support, backwards compatibility, openness, ways they will ensure developers, any investors they have (had say Tencent or someone said we are sponsoring this then I would have paid attention) or anything like that. That said Sony, MS and Nintendo seem to be conspiring with Ubisoft, Bethesda, Valve and EA to bring us bugger all in games this last generation so better opening than other times.

Bets on crappy android box, crappy linux box or prebaked PC standard nobody will take note of?

Any alternative to the Big 3 is welcome, but I need to see them hiring engineers and designers with experience in the field before I give an opinion. Right now it's just "another one" among many no name consoles out there, a little tease doesn't excite me, I want the specs and the prototype.

Sega did back in the past and we saw how badly that went

I WANNA SEE A CUSTOM OS GAWDAMMIT

While i agree with you 100%...when it comes to some companies...its just a flat out "NO!"

Google created the custom Chrome OS and we saw how badly that went. Like omfg could Google create an any worse OS? Some companies just aren't meant to create custom OSs.
