GBAtemp Game of the Year 2018 Voting - Part 1: PlayStation

gbatemp_game_of_the_year_2018_b.jpg

It's now partway into December, and the year of 2018 is coming to a close. In that timeframe, many, many video games have come and gone, with the likes of new Pokemon, God of War, Assassin's Creed, and other titles hitting the shelves. Not every release was a major success, but as far as most gaming calendars go, this year was definitely one of the most packed. With 2019 around the corner, it's time to take a moment to reminisce on which video game was your absolute favorite of this past year.

As usual, GBAtemp will be holding our own version of the GOTY awards, where the best of the best will duke it out in the polls, only to lose to Pokemon in the end, and surprise nobody once more. We'll be splitting the categories by platform, PC/Microsoft, Nintendo, and PlayStation so that each will have representatives to go against each other when we do our final vote at the end of the year. This first thread is for voting on the best PlayStation game, which includes Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, God of War, and more. So long as they were released on 2018 for PlayStation 4, it's fair game!

Happy voting!

Credit to FAST for this...beautiful banner, representing the greatest gaming had to offer this year.

Gonna have to say God of War. Sadly wont play Spider Man until next year.

I for one am beyond disappointed with RDR2. Never have I been so discouraged in an open world game to actually check out the open world.

No Soul Calibur 6... fuck off with your half assed poll.

...in fact, it looks like none of the new releases I purchased for PS4 this year are in the poll; not that I'd vote for it, but where's SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy? Where's Shikhondo? Where's Tempest 4000?

Easily goes to Detroit: Become Human from me, even though it was interactive cutscenes mostly, i spent days and weeks messing with the timelines. Absolutely hated God of War, and was disappointed with Red Dead 2.

Can only choose 1... damn. guess DQ 11 would be it for me. it's been a long time since a game made me feel excited to get home and boot up the game.

I personally think it'd make more sense to exclude all and any multi-platform games and make it Sony-only.

The story and gameplay itself was tremendous, though.

only one vote allowed?
spider man or red2. I'll pick one.

I liked Shadow of Tomb raider, too bad it's not in there.
I'm waiting for this months PS+ to try iconoclast.

If Red Dead 2 doesn't win, I'm having Elon Musk buy GBAtemp and then delete it.
it's great game, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would, so far (about 20 hours in)
on the other hand, Spider-Man: I bought this game for my son, but I never thought I would enjoy it so much. It's an amazing game all round. I voted for it :)

The only ones I’ve played are Vampyr, which hasn’t been finished because it hasn’t gripped me for some reason, and Dissidia NT, which is fun enough but hard. I have God of War laying around though.

Glad to see God of War won here too.
Spider-Man was my favorite at first. Really great game, good story with some nice twists but the combat and environments get just a little repetitive after a while.
But then I bought God of War at the Black Friday sales, mostly on a whim and it just blew me away.

[spoilers]
Great story with amazing twists to the whole mythology and a great and quite unique way of exploring the environment.
The world isn't giant, but just big enough and the way the water drops to reveal more and more was just fantastic level design.
The combat get's just a little competitive and just at that moment they add the Blades of Chaos. Still prefer the axe though :P
Was completely not expecting those and surprisingly that element did not get spoiled in any videos or discussions I saw about the game.
Same for the multiple twists at the end.

Made me start a replay of the original trilogy and can't wait for the next one.
[/spoilers]

The fact that I played it this late is mainly because there did not seem to be as much hype around GOW.
At least compared to Spider-Man and RDR2 and I feared that more people would have completely overlooked this game.
Glad to see I was wrong.

I can imagine that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great game in it's own right and it's probably more 'unique' than GOW.
(loads of action/adventure with RPG elements lately, but westerns are pretty rare. I know open world games aren't that unique, but it has some pretty great mechanics)
I'm afraid it's just less my genre.

Haven't played Detroid: Become Human yet, but it's definitely on my list.
I'm curious what you hated about GoW though, if you don't mind me asking.
It was definitely not what I expected, but in a good way in my case.

The boring axe, man I really hated that axe, the poor execution on nord mythology, they could of done so much more with it. The entire map having to retrace alot of steps and rowing about on boat just made exploring for me dull, the game was way too slow paced for my liking, the repetition of puzzles, and of course I much preferred the god like style of the original series, and the boss fights and backdrops just felt more epic to me.
The game just wasn't for me....i tried REAL hard just to finish it, then sold it immediately after.

the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now

    Interesting lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb
    +1
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding
    +1

When I played Cyberpunk on my old 2080 Ti it sucked lol
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Maybe they plan on offloading to the CPU?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Would be kinda cool to have the CPU and GPU working in random more
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Tandem even
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

Have you ever been beaten by a wet spaghetti noodle by your girlfriend because she has a twin sister, and you got confused and fucked her dad?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I had a girlfriend who had a twin sister and they would mess with me constantly.... Until one chipped a tooth then finally I could tell them apart.... Lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They would have the same hair style the same clothes everything... Really messed with my head lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
