Hi, I bought a second hand 3DS that is linked to another guy's nnid. I can install cias, but I would like to be able to connect to the nintendo network, eshop, do network playing etc. How can 9 remove safely this nnid link ?

Thanks in advance. I read some things in 3ds hacks guide troubleshooting section, but I don't feel confident to do it. Can you give me step by step instructions and confirm what I need to do ? Thanks in advance !

Detour guide to ensure your SD card will serve you well.
  1. Copy everything off your SD card onto a computer.
  2. Reformat as FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size with Windows File Explorer or guiformat if it's bigger than 32 GB.
  3. While empty, do a full Write + Verify Test with H2testw. I highly advise you do this step for data integrity.
  4. If the card passes, delete the *.h2w test files.
    • If an error was reported, stop the test. Replace the hardware failed card and go back to step 1 or 2.
  5. Copy everything back onto the card and reinsert into the 3DS.

Detour guide in updating your custom firmware and/or 3DS firmware.
Typical custom firmware setup should include the trifecta of Luma3DS v9.1, boot9strap v1.3, and GodMode9 v1.7.1 on both the SD card and CTRNAND.

6. Turn on the 3DS and hold (Select) button to access Luma3DS configuration.

7A. If you have Luma3DS v7.0.5 or older, update the custom firmware with:
or

7B. If you have Luma3DS v7.1 – v9.0 with boot9strap v1.0 – 1.2, update the custom firmware with:
  • Updating B9S
  • You may cheat a little in collecting files by using the starter kit found here.

8. Update the 3DS firmware to 11.9.0-42U.
  • HOME Menu → System Settings → Other Settings → System Update

Unlinking the NNID and starting anew.
  1. Backup all your game saves + extdata with Checkpoint or JKSM save manager.
  2. Download the seeddb.bin file found here. Place this file on the SD card at:
    • sdmc:/gm9/support/seeddb.bin
    • This step will save you most of the headache in the below step 6.
  3. Backup all your titles [games / DLCs / updates] into *.cia files with GodMode9.
  4. Follow the official Nintendo method of unlinking the NNID.
  5. Once the NNID is unlinked, it's probably a good idea to start a fresh user profile by:
    • HOME Menu → System Settings → Other Settings → Format System Memory
  6. Reinstall all the *.cia files with FBI.
    • Launch all your games at least once.
    • Those that fail to launch will require further decryption:
      • FBI → Titles → <Name of the Game> → Import Seed
  7. Restore the saves + extdata with save manager of choice.

Hi thanks, but I still haven't played the games.

So I don't need to restore the saved games.

Can't I just reformat the console, then redo the finalizing steps from the 3Ds guide and then re-install the cias of the games ? Instead of contacting Nintendo ?

Or is there a way I can do this without reinstalling the games ? My console is already up to date, CFW, luma, godmode are up to date.

Thanks in advance !

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I may add that all the games there are not mine (they have been installed by the previous user), I plan to install my own CIAs.

Yah, so I wrote that above post in case you already played some games. There was also calling Nintendo if the buyer's NNID account still matters... I guess it should have been that person's job to salvage whatever data that was important to him/her.

From Nintendo's Support page, What Is Lost after Formatting the System Memory?

The following information will be lost after formatting the system memory:

  • All data in the System Memory (including friend list, Notifications, and step count)
  • System Settings data
  • Built-in software save data
  • Software update data
  • Data stored on the SD Card, with the exception of photos and videos that you've recorded, will be invalidated. Any downloaded software will need to be redownloaded after the format
  • Downloadable software save data
  • All photos in the System Memory
  • All other extra data
  • The link to a Nintendo Network ID and any associated Nintendo eShop licenses and funds
    • Nintendo eShop software licenses and funds will not be removed if a Nintendo Network ID has not been linked
    • A Nintendo Network ID can be only linked to a different system by performing a system transfer How to

Basically, everything that's currently in the Nintendo 3DS folder will be deleted after Format System Memory along with the NNID.

***

Option A - If there are several titles you want to reuse,
  1. First, do step 3 in Unlinking the NNID and starting anew.
    • There's a way to selectively dump titles by individually pressing (Y) button / yellow highlight selecting.
  2. Copy the *.cia files over to a computer.
  3. Continue onward to Option B.

Option B - If there are no games you wish to keep that came with the 3DS,
  1. Follow the steps 2–4 for Detour guide to ensure your SD card will serve you well.
  2. Follow through with Detour guide in updating your custom firmware and/or 3DS firmware.
  3. Do step 5 in Unlinking the NNID and starting anew.

Thanks a lot, I'll try that then...
Hey, my bad. I might have simplified some parts in the Option A and Option B in post #4 in the updating CFW part.

A quick and dirty way to check if you have A9LH or B9S type custom firmware is to look for one of these files on the root of the SD card:

B9S:
  • boot.firm
or

A9LH:
  • arm9loaderhax.bin

Foot Notes
If you're not sure which you one have, put both Luma3DS v7.0.5 and Luma3DS v9.1 on the SD card. Hold the (Select) button when turning on the 3DS to check what version pops up.

If the 3DS does not boot, you may have a really old version of boot9strap installed.

I think that I'm up to date with everything I think: luma, godmode, 3ds nintendo os (11.9), etc. When I boot with select + power Luma 9.1 shows, and it says "booted from SD via B9S"

Try booting the 3DS again without SD card. This is to check what's on the CTRNAND side.

* Need to check CTRNAND's Luma3DS configuration.

Without SD card -> same : luma 9.1 and shows Booted from CTRNAND via BS9
Sweet! Whoever sold that 3DS to you did their due diligence.

Okay, so after verifying your SD card is in tip-top shape with H2testw (ie, not fake or faulty), continue with Format System Memory barring of course there aren't any games you want to keep.

Super Important

Make a SysNAND *.bin image and keep it safe on your computer or external drive. This is needed in the event you ever softbrick the 3DS.

Also, always backup your saves + extdata with either Checkpoint or JKSM!!

Happy gaming and homebrewing. :)

Backuping right now.... Many thanks for your help :-)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

BTW my Luma3DS updated is always firing an error trying to download the latest release info from github and the menu I've got from godmode seems a bit older than the one I've got on the two other 3DS (my children ones) that I hacked yesterday. Maybe godmode is not up to date...

How can I re-install luma + godmode ? The console is already with a CFW... can I just follow the same procedure as for installing on a "clean" 3DS ?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I meant "luma updater" at the beginning of first sentence...

I think this has something to do with TLS v1.2 update that took place on GitHub several months ago that conflicts with many homebrew apps. If you see Luma3DS v9.1 on both SD card and B9S, you're already on the latest stable release.

There are nightly builds of Luma3DS but you need not worry about those unless you intend to use the cheat engine. :)

For the SD card, you swap in the latest version of GodMode9 at:
  • sdmc:/luma/payloads/GodMode9.firm
  • sdmc:/gm9 folder
The same goes for lumaupdater app, everything else, etc. If you're not sure what files go to where, you can rely on the CFW starter kit mentioned in the above post #2.
That archive was made for the purpose of troubleshooting, recovery, and convenience.

If you wish to update GodMode9 found on the CTRNAND:
  • Press (HOME) → Scripts... → GM9Megascript → Scripts from Plailect's Guide → Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND → etc.
To manually remove payloads you don't want to keep:
  • 0:/luma/payloads (SD card)
  • 1:/rw/luma/payloads (SysNAND CTRNAND)
Press (X) on any *.firm to delete in either drive (be really careful in SYSNAND CTRNAND), or delete the ones you wan't in 0:/luma/payloads and rerun the CTRNAND script.

***

Examine if your new setup is clean by referring to this post.
  • Step 6 - Luma3DS configuration settings, I advise not to use ( ) Disable ARM11 exception handlers. Like ever.
  • Step 7 - If using the starter kit which includes boot9strap v1.3 *.firm and *.sha files in the boot9strap folder, you can run SafeB9SInstaller without having to second guess what B9S version you have.
    • boot9strap resides on CTRNAND and not the SD card. There's a way to clean up your SD card afterwards by:
      • GodMode9 ... → Scripts from Plailect's Guide → Cleanup SD card etc.
  • Step 12 - Refers to a video tutorial for Rosalina Menu injection. This feature trips up a lot of first timers when trying to get Homebrew Launcher to work.

Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot, everything went fine. What I did:
  1. Make a sysnand backup as you advivised, checked that luma and godmode were in ctrnand, etc.
  2. Formatted the console with my current 32go SD card in it. This erased the nintendo id as well as all installed games/utilities such as FBI etc.
  3. Formatted a 128 go SD card using FAT 32 (beware, the name should be the same as previous card : "NO NAME" in my case. I renamed it the first time and it was recognized, but did not show anything)
  4. Copied all the content from the previous sd card to the new card
  5. Did again the finalizing steps from the guide, but just the part for installing FBI, the homebrew channel, luma updater etc.
  6. I ran the luma updated and this time it succeeded (I already had the last version, but previously it fired an error, now it's ok)
  7. I installed cia emulators and cia games.
  8. I logged in with my nintendo network id.
  9. The console is mine again :-)
Thanks a lot for your help !!!
