This opinion may be unpopular but i think the bricking by third party docks issue is quite overblown.

I choose to risk it with an "insten" brand dock and power supply that i got for sub $50CAD when an ebay coupon and item sale coincided. been great the last six months with occasional use.

If you're looking for a new one: Any dock not made by Nintendo could brick your switch, so unfortunately you will need to spend more then a new game for a new one!
If you don't like the Nintendo one, but have one: there are dock shells you can buy for ~$10 that you can put the internals of the dock in.

I just cut the whole top of mine (Front and back), sanded it and now i basically have an open air official dock

Or you could do that...

I actually think that the issue was mainly happening when updating to 5.x firmware while connected to the doc. So maybe just a precaution just undock your switch for updates?

No it has to do with Nintendo on purpose making the power delivery different to try to make it so that only their dock would work. Most newer ones take that in account and work now but before they didn't know that and that's what caused the bricks

If your problem is that the official one makes your Switch overheat (like it did to my first one and so it stopped shuting down), your best and safest bet would be to buy a female to male USB-C adaptor and let the console sit outside the dock with the grils facing up, just like I did.

There's no reason to get anything other than Nintendo's dock.

If you have a problem with heat, it's either your switch, or you have horrible airflow.

I have this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071YVC3NJ/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_2_w

It uses the innards of your REAL Nintendo dock, so there's no risk of bricking, and it makes it super portable! There's also better heat dissipation.
