Hi all,
I have a Nintendo Switch which is running 4.1.0, I have Renix installed and I am able to play my NSP files via TinFoil.

When I installed NSP files via TinFoil I always choose to ignore Firmware requirements and so far everything works but I am not sure whether some games will require a higher firmware in the future.

From what I have researched Reinx works on 6.1.0, should I upgrade my switch from 4.1.0 to 6.1.0 using chiodujournx or should I stick with 4.1.0?
What benefits are there of staying with 4.1.0, will I ever run into the need of upgrading in the future even though I select to ignore firmware requirements in Tinfoil?

My brother has a switch running 4.0.1 which I need to install Renix on, I was thinking of upgrading that to 4.1.0 so its the same as mine, but not sure whether I should leave that on its current firmware or not.

Thanks,

But its the safest fw until today.
No cfw - no bricked hardware from faulty xci/nsp - no ban from online play.
So update to 6.2.0.

No my brother bricked his console with a smash brothers nsp.
Now he cant play with it anymore.
This would have not happend if he updated to 6.2.0
I have now updated my console.

so in a forum about custom firmware and softmods, when asked what the best firmware is you suggest locking your console out of HB altogether? doesnt sound retarded at all!

by that logic, not even buying a switch is the safest option. cant brick your switch if you dont have one!

This was just a warning that every fw < 6.2.0 is vulnerable against faulty nsp/xci
More to stupid users not using common sense, just for your info 6.2 is now hacked! The OP WANTS HACKS! OP no need to update at moment if tinfoil working for you!

I thought 6.2.0 has issues running custom firmware.

it does, he was just being "funny"

it's best to keep the consoles on the lowest firmware possible. if you don't have a dire need to update right now, i personally wouldn't suggest it. however, if you've got a secure and functional environment for sending payloads to your switch, you don't really lose anything by updating, since you won't lose your coldboot exploit (you do however lose an access to a currently undisclosed warmboot exploit) and you can also make a NAND backup of your 4.1 firmware should you ever decide to return to it, but you WILL NOT be able to boot it without autoRCM installed because your fuse count will be too high, unless you install autoRCM before updating, which prevents the fuse burn.

tinfoil's "ignore firmware" feature should work until a game requires a system module/service that doesn't exist in your current firmware.

You are totaly wrong. Your fuse count will always be the same, your burned fuses are what matters

Thank you for the detailed input :)

I think I am happy with 4.1.0 on my switch, like I said my bother has 4.0.1 so I plan on upgrading his to 4.1.0. Before upgrading 4.0.1 to 4.1.0 I plan on installing Reinx and enabling autoRCM. I dont see the need to go back down to 4.0.1 at this stage (Both Switches will run the same homebrew so all of my content is working on 4.1.0) so I may not bother with NAND Backup of 4.0.1, unless you suggest I do for reasons other then downgrading?

Obviously the grep dude is a troll who needs to get a life and some ass lol.

Anyhow to the OP the real question is, what benefit do you get from updating? What are you missing out on? Is the console unstable?

I believe the tinfoil option would not work in all instances. But, I'd worry about updating when you actually encounter a game you intend to play, that doesnt work...

That said, make a backup, Go for 6.1.0 using the proper tools that your already aware of, keep auotRCM on and avoid exFAT unless you have to use it.

Make a full NAND backup of 4.0.1 just cuz, its lower and the lower the better. It may be a "dirty" backup, but still.

for what reason do you want to update your brother's switch?

The main reason was to keep the two switch consoles the same. I don't live with my brother so the idea was that if both have the same firmware then both can run the same games and homebrew. Easier for me to manage :)

I am in the same boat, switch 4.1 waiting for the release of the untethered coldboot (that feels like will never be released, though I don't know why). The problem is that Smash is coming, and I will update the console for it.

The problem is that upgrading without burning e-fuses looks like a pain in the ass, long and maybe complicated, and I don't know what the downsides are (I think that you should never turn on the console without RCM or it will burn efuses or something).

The thing is that having an untethered coldboot sounds amazing, but I think it won't come before Smash (and also, it would need somethink like emunand to load the game if I keep my console on 4.1...)

What I meant with all this, is that if you don't have any specific game that you want to play, I would stay on 4.1. If there is something coming that you want to play, maybe you should update without burning e-fuses if you want to come back to 4.1 once the untethered coldboot realeases. Or if you just don't care about untethered coldboot and want to play games, I think you can use 5.1 (or something, look it up) to load games that require up to 6.1 firmware.

i can respect that, i like consistency myself...
as far as i'm aware though, there shouldn't be a discernible difference between firmware 4.0.1 and 4.1 in terms of loading games and homebrew, unless there is a game out there that requires resources from 4.1 that don't exist in 4.0.1, then i'm just talking out my ass here.

you can go ahead and proceed to do what you planned with your brother's switch, installing 4.1 with autoRCM onto it, but i WOULD also recommend keeping a backup of 4.0.1 before doing that just to keep a clean copy of the 4.0.1 firmware should you ever need to return to it, for example if your brother has connected to the internet with that firmware, then you'll need to restore that same clean dump to mitigate a ban. you'll also be able to boot the 4.0.1 firmware on his switch without having to worry about bypassing the fuse check.
