TX Presents 'Happy SX Halloween' v2.2.1 Update

It is October 31st, and Team-Xecuter Announces a 'Happy SX Halloween' update which is packed with treats and some new tricks for SX OS users to enjoy!

It may be trick or treat day in most places in world, but for Team-Xecuter it means being hard at work while eating candies and treating their loyal SX OS users with a nice new update to their CFW for Nintendo Switch consoles, and this one is packed with goodies to munch on as you answer the door to all the little goblins and witches looking for treats themselves, so enjoy and Happy SX Halloween!

Today, we are back with another release of SX OS beta! This update addresses some of the excellent feedback we've had following our v2.2 beta release. We can't thank the community enough for continuously identifying small issues and notifying us about them. Keep the feedback coming!

Now without further ado, lets have a look at the list of changes:

  • Support for *big* USB drives
In our last announcement we bragged that you were able to enjoy TERABYTES of content, which was technically correct.. but in practice you were still limited to USB drives with a capacity up to 2TB. This is now a limitation of the past, as you are now able to use storage devices with a capacity of up to a PETABYTE!
  • Fix USB disk directory scanning
Due to a small bug in 2.2 beta the subdirectories on your USB disk weren't being properly scanned for content. This has been fixed and you can now rely on the same subfolder structure as on your microSD card.
  • Fix USB ethernet and keyboard support
The introduction of our USB disk support apparently broke support for existing USB peripherals that were supported by Nintendo's firmware. Fixed!
  • Add USB drive write support
We have enabled write support for USB drives. In practice for SX OS this means that NSP files can now actually be deleted after installation. But this also serves a greater purpose.. keep reading!
  • Eject gamecard on USB eject
When you disconnect a USB disk while in the main menu the (emulated) Game Card will actually be ejected now. A small detail, but a nice addition nonetheless.
  • Improved LayeredFS support
LayeredFS suffered from incompatibilities with certain games, this has been addressed and fixed. If you find any more problem titles, let us know!
  • Add support for temporarily disabling LayeredFS by pressing X while launching game/application
If you want to skip loading your LayeredFS patches you can now hold the X key while launching a game/application. The game/app will start normally without any patches applied.
  • Further improvements to overall system stability..

.. and other minor adjustments to enhance the user experience. You know the drill! ;-)

Last but not least, we have some cool news for homebrew devs. We are releasing a little library called `libusbfs` that allows your homebrew to interface with USB disks very easily. You can find the latest library code on our website in the downloads section! We are looking forward to popular homebrew apps adapting support for USB storage.

That's all we have today. We get many questions daily about supporting "patched" switch consoles. We are working hard on a solution. Stay tuned, friends!

From everyone here at GBATemp, Team-Xecuter, MaxConsole, we wish you a safe and Happy Halloween, enjoy! :)

You support sx os?
I though all homebrew devs hate sx os

I support all innovative developers who push the scene forward. I am not saying they are perfect, but I respect their accomplishments. They have, and continue to push the scene forward. And I am thankful they so quickly released their usb mass storage library so homebrew can access the USB HDD too.

What is probably selling their product right now is XCI and NSP installation off of the HDD. Releasing support for home brew probably wont change their sales figures vary much, I feel they did it to contribute to the community and we should all be thankful.

They also had a ton of USB hard drive issues with their first release, so they had to release an update fast. But they didn't have to open source their library. Even if their goal was to get more homebrew for their users who will now be using hard drives, it still is good for the scene, as you pointed out.

I definitely agree that XCI loading off an external hard drive and NSP installation from said hard drive is their main selling point right now.

Great job Xecuter.
Will it be possible in a future update to unleash the entire use of 4 GB of memory for future apps like retroarch?

Ps: im wrong or Xecuter are also working for a mod on XBOX ONE S/X?
It would great also install on one x windows 10!

They did, I downgraded when I encountered the USB ethernet issues. However they heavily advertised it as an experimental beta, so you cant really hold that against them. I would rather they release public beta's, than only release stable versions ya know? As long as they clearly mark what is stable and what is beta, which they seem to do.

Are you inferring that you use SX OS?

The gamecard unmount is actually the top feature for me, the transition is seamless.

The one thing left I would like to see is a auto-mount feature where you would select a game from the horizon os and it would automatically load it without you needing to mount it manually from SX OS menu. That's actually why I'm using NSP games in the first place, I'm too lazy to switch "game cards".

I do use SX OS. It is the most user friendly OS and best UI hands down. And while I may be a programmer, I do not want to *feel* like one when I am trying to play a game.
Do you at least use your build of tinfoil to install game updates? Or is everything a lie? :P just kidding, or am I? Sure, it's easy and comes in a nice little package. But in the end you're paying for what is just slightly ahead of the free options. Perhaps you prefer XCI loading rather than installing games. Perhaps you have a large library and loading XCI files off an 8TB hard drive is your dream setup. For everything else, for those of us who don't mind copying a few files to our SD cards, installing NSPs (games), and such, do you think SX OS is worth the cost when there are free options that can achieve the same? Do you feel SX OS is more polished? Produces less errors or at least when it does error, it doesn't confuse the user? Sorry, I'm just a bit inquisitive tonight.

It is a fair question. I would not call SX slightly ahead of the free options. I am not trying to be a cheerleader here, but there is no free option for stealth (huge), there is no free option for loading XCI (huge), and there is no free mass storage driver (HUGE). Anyone who knows me, knows what I think of the intelligence of anyone who installs hacked XCI -> NSP installations. They are all complete shit, and the lengths people will go to, to save $30 astounds me. Right now, no one even comes close to SX, and I do not expect that to change anytime soon in the future.

Guys, you can show your gratefulness for mods clearing the anti-SXOS posts without sounding like bitter grudging children.

Just say thank you for cleaning up, without resorting to insults. It's petty, and you're making the users of SXOS look like unending jerks.
