TX Presents 'Happy SX Halloween' v2.2.1 Update

It is October 31st, and Team-Xecuter Announces a 'Happy SX Halloween' update which is packed with treats and some new tricks for SX OS users to enjoy!

It may be trick or treat day in most places in world, but for Team-Xecuter it means being hard at work while eating candies and treating their loyal SX OS users with a nice new update to their CFW for Nintendo Switch consoles, and this one is packed with goodies to munch on as you answer the door to all the little goblins and witches looking for treats themselves, so enjoy and Happy SX Halloween!

Today, we are back with another release of SX OS beta! This update addresses some of the excellent feedback we've had following our v2.2 beta release. We can't thank the community enough for continuously identifying small issues and notifying us about them. Keep the feedback coming!

Now without further ado, lets have a look at the list of changes:

  • Support for *big* USB drives
In our last announcement we bragged that you were able to enjoy TERABYTES of content, which was technically correct.. but in practice you were still limited to USB drives with a capacity up to 2TB. This is now a limitation of the past, as you are now able to use storage devices with a capacity of up to a PETABYTE!
  • Fix USB disk directory scanning
Due to a small bug in 2.2 beta the subdirectories on your USB disk weren't being properly scanned for content. This has been fixed and you can now rely on the same subfolder structure as on your microSD card.
  • Fix USB ethernet and keyboard support
The introduction of our USB disk support apparently broke support for existing USB peripherals that were supported by Nintendo's firmware. Fixed!
  • Add USB drive write support
We have enabled write support for USB drives. In practice for SX OS this means that NSP files can now actually be deleted after installation. But this also serves a greater purpose.. keep reading!
  • Eject gamecard on USB eject
When you disconnect a USB disk while in the main menu the (emulated) Game Card will actually be ejected now. A small detail, but a nice addition nonetheless.
  • Improved LayeredFS support
LayeredFS suffered from incompatibilities with certain games, this has been addressed and fixed. If you find any more problem titles, let us know!
  • Add support for temporarily disabling LayeredFS by pressing X while launching game/application
If you want to skip loading your LayeredFS patches you can now hold the X key while launching a game/application. The game/app will start normally without any patches applied.
  • Further improvements to overall system stability..

.. and other minor adjustments to enhance the user experience. You know the drill! ;-)

Last but not least, we have some cool news for homebrew devs. We are releasing a little library called `libusbfs` that allows your homebrew to interface with USB disks very easily. You can find the latest library code on our website in the downloads section! We are looking forward to popular homebrew apps adapting support for USB storage.

That's all we have today. We get many questions daily about supporting "patched" switch consoles. We are working hard on a solution. Stay tuned, friends!

From everyone here at GBATemp, Team-Xecuter, MaxConsole, we wish you a safe and Happy Halloween, enjoy! :)

Since it's a library, it'll probably work on all CFWs
It doesn't look like it. I compiled an homebrew with this "libusbfs" but I'm always getting USBFS_UNMOUNTED when I'm running it on Atmosphere. Looks like IPC comands sent to a SX specific process.
Anyone can confirm this ?

Nothing can be 100% safe for online, but if you reset your factory nand, and you normally only use XCI's online you should be safe, not 100% but a while before big 'N' catches up to you. And use two microsd's one for emunand and one for original. -- and only have legit nsp's installed on your factory, and none of them legit or otherwise on your emunand, you should be safe, but its not perfect.

Hmm on 3DS was option to unlink nand from emunand - so emunand as part of SD card shares only "Nintendo" folder - but difference was sub folder - is this possible to have such oh thing? I am telling you true - that I will be more than a happy having option to unlink and option to have emunand as part of SD card <- TX should cosider that.
Cheers!

Awesome update again, now to make it perferct there would be something missing to disable firmware updates to Play everything between 5-6.00 or something. =)

I love the update now we can have folder scanning from hdd. I'd like to also see this folder being scanned:

/switch/updates

That way I can separate xci/nsp games and updates easier as I know what folder would contain what. I know I can put these updates in another folder such as /sxos/nsp - but it's would be nice to have:

/sxos/nsp
/sxos/xci
/sxos/updates
/sxos/dlc

or

/switch/nsp
/switch/xci
/switch/updates
/switch/dlc

Hopefully someone from TX will see this :-)

I assume drives with their own power supply are best used?

2.5" usb drives don't need their own power supply, usb can supply more than enough. On the other hand 3.5" drives work on 5v + 12v and draw more current than 2.5" drives - so these need their own power supplies. The best drives to use SSD, these use much less power and are totally silent, also there is far less chance of corrupting data if you remove the drive when powered as there are no moving parts.

if it requires SX OS hooks then you can still use the FREE downloable version which supports homebrew to utilise it.

standalone may be better, but then every app needs to compile the lib into the released executable, having it at OS level makes for smaller homebrew files and ultimately more compatible - iie: you dont end up with old homebrew using old usbfs libs.. if its in the OS then the old homebrew ends up using the newer OS routines.

not well explained, I need coffee.

It makes perfect sense, I understood it.

Also I have old switch homebrew released a few months ago back when 4.1.0 was released, and these homebrew does not work on 5.1.0. After libnx was updated it worked again for 5.1.0 so it is very much the same here. But like you said, the homebrew must be recompiled to fix it and this can sometimes take a long while.

So I agree having it on OS side is better

Great, but i am still waiting for tinfoil to install from external drive, sxos installer doesn't support install games that requires new update on low FW.

I'm sure it will be a matter of time before all the TX heaters start bashing away on this new update. That being said!

I think I'll stay home for the night and not go out trick or treating since TX treated us with this awesome treat... :)
