Hi, i bought a o3ds with firmware 2.2.0.0u
,no browser, im already read everything in 3ds.guide.hack i can't use hardmod because of soldering... And i don't have access to 3ds cartridges to update to higher firmware, i managed to buy Nintendo ds lite so that i can use ntrboot method unfortunately this device has an old R4i revolution for nds/dsi with gold label i checked the compatible flashcard list it's not one of them, so can i use ntrboot withe NDS methods withe this old flashcard or not? It has moonshell 1.7 installed also my 3ds doesn't recognize this flashcard i tried to see if i can run ds game on 3ds but nothing comes up in menu, what's your suggestion? Sorry for the long description

I bought a new 2ds xl today.
so far I have not unpacked it, I want a FW and saw on 3ds guide that either only a hardmod, flashcard or "seedminer" method works from 11.3.
Now the question would be, what is best should I get myself a flashcart or rather upgrade to 11.8 and buy a DSIware game in the shop?
what disadvantages do I have with 11.8? is the bann risk higher?
I hope you can help me. want to unpack the console now :)

@Reza007 If your R4 is not on the list, it will probably not work. System-update with a 3DS cartridge will also not help. It won't install a Browser or the vulnerable Sound-app. Look at this thread to be sure about your flashcard:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-ultimate-list-of-ntrboot-compatible-flashcards.492234/

@charbo12 N2DSXL comes with firmware >=11.4

A free solution for both of you is update to latest firmware 11.8 and use Frogminer. No need to buy any DSiWare. The latest firmware has not disadvantages.

Just got my N3DSXL (the snes version) and it will probably be awhile before I get my R4i Gold card (nds-card hasn't gotten back to me about shipping it yet) and in the meantime I figured I'd mess around on the free SNES Mario Kart download.

Basically, I just wanted to make sure it was okay to go ahead and claim this game even though I plan to mod the system soon. We're safe to update to the latest official firmware, right?

Greetings everyone.
Old 3DSXL running Luma3DS CFW.
Although I had always known that SNES VC is for N3DS only, I decided yesterday to download a couple of SNES cias such as Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Sunset Riders etc.
Installed them using FBI and tried to run them. To my surprise, everything was ok! All games loaded without any problems, played smoothly, save OK and all.
Not that I'm complaining or anything but I'd like to ask: how is this possible? Is it something that has to do with my cfw? (I just followed the noob guide for Luma3DS)? Thanks in advance for any possible answers.

@Reza007: Any error message? “Can’t connect” is a little bit vague.

@Geofonos: Never heard of official SNES Virtual Console running on old 3DS.
Possibility 1: You do have a new 3DS.
Possibility 2: It is not Nintendo’s Virtual Console emulator. If it runs full speed, its probably just a forwarder to SNES9x with one ROM inside (touch the lower screen while a game is running). New Super Ultimate Injector for 3DS can build such cias working on O3DS.
If you try games that use a special co-processor like Star Fox, Yoshi’s Island (Super FX) or Kirby Super Star, Super Mario RPG(SA1) you’ll notice that O3DS can’t handle these well – too slow.

Instead of using individual (pseudo)Virtual Console injections, you can use SNES9x directly and use all your games from there. It will help not to reach the 300 title limit (if you have many games).

@KleinesSinchen thank you very much for your fast reply.
Possibility 1 is out of the question. I may be a noob but I do now how to tell an O3DS from a N3DS.
Possibility 2 I will have to check about that. I just found a new (August 2018 or later) folder of uploaded .cias for 3DS from a user Downloaded a few, installed them with FBI and that's it. The game icons on desktop screen show the "virtual console" logo as well. Will post pictures if it helps.

Hi all,

I have a R4i Gold+ for 3DS/DS. At the moment I don't need or want the hassle of loading custom firmware on to my 3DS. I would like to be able to play DS roms though which the cart supports. Can I do this without hacking the 3DS?

yup . . . although i still recommend installing cfw

also if this is the card you are referring to then installing cfw would not be a hassle but a breeze . . . and if its this card then you should know it has a timebomb and after September of next year you will need to roll back the date on your console to run it

Thanks for the info. My card is the first one you linked to. I was mindful of not getting one with a timebomb.

I looked at the instructions but it seemed a lot of steps, including needing to use a seedminer. I'm on 11.80 firmware so I'm not sure if that makes it more complicated. Is it possible to just load the cfw when you want it via SD card or does it have yo be flashed to the rom of the 3DS?

If I just go with DS games for now, do I just put the roms on the sd card and I'm good to go or do I need loader software like I did with my Acekard on my old DS? I'm still waiting for my sd card so I can't test it atm.

I installed a cfw earlier in the year and grabbed stuff off the free shop. Now I'm worried about even turning it on with all the new protections Nintendo did as I don't want my ID to get banned somehow (I've spent way too much on both the 3DS and Switch to risk it). Is there anyway to restore my 3DS back to its untouched original form or at least get my ID off of there altogether?

seed? . . . no you are confused if you were to use that card you would only need to flip a switch (in the flashcard) then you can install cfw by starting here Installing boot9strap (ntrboot) - 3DS Hacks Guide

Is it possible to just load the cfw when you want it via SD card or does it have yo be flashed to the rom of the 3DS?
there is in fact one cfw you could still soft install but in all honesty there are so many issues disadvantages with it i should not even mention it

If I just go with DS games for now, do I just put the roms on the sd card and I'm good to go or do I need loader software like I did with my Acekard on my old DS?
i assume this card comes ready to go but i dont have one myself so i am not 100%

Please do not rush this. Ban on the 3DS is highly unlikely if you don’t do stupid things. And please read Lilith Valentine’s article before you finally decide. There are two paragraphs about bans. The new protections have zero impact on already installed content.

Thank you for suggesting frogminer method

This is a pretty general question.... I've been through the CFW installation process before with my O3DS but it didn't really explain much about EmuNAND. I know it's supposedly available with several CFWs including Luma3DS, and I've seen booting options on the Luma settings menu, but I still don't know how to use it, why I should (or shouldn't) be using it, or what things should still be done with SysNAND if I do use an EmuNAND.

I acquired a N3DS today and would like to understand the subject as clearly as possible before doing any modding. I'm not in any rush.

EmuNAND/Emulated NAND/redNAND/redirected NAND/sdimage: These are all terms for the same thing. They refer to running the 3DS' OS (Operating System) from the SD card slot of your 3DS, instead of the 3DS' internal flash memory (called NAND). It provides a safer environment for experimenting with system components as well as running the latest games, while still keeping your hacks.
as for should you use it . . . the answer is no, modern cfw's boot via an exploit called Boot9strap (b9s) and whats important about that is, it happens before the system firmware boots allowing you to fix your console in the event of a brick . . . and the idea of preserving your console in a lower firmware in order to keep the best fw for hacking is moot as the definitively best cfw (luma) uses the definitively best entrypoint (b9s)

So, I've been away from the 3ds hacking scene for a while, last time I checked, gateway was still the hot stuff.
I was thinking of getting meself a cfw, since gateway is deader than disco at this point, still, I would like to continue
using the thing, instead of getting the 3ds sd card bloated with stuff.
I've checked to see if there was a sorta mod or what to continue using it, I found this
https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/
Can anyone confirm me that this work even with the, emh, newer stuff, or should I just ditch the darn thing?
