Topic. I already have everything dumped as XCI files so I figured it would probably be best to figure out how to use them (most of them are 4GB+)

Well exfat was working great for me. Everything seemed to be working just fine, so realistically I had no reason to switch.

But a comment in another thread I was in terrified me. The tl;dr was they said that there was a risk that closing a homebrew application the wrong way (using the home button versus exiting through the actual application) or a system crash (these did happen every now and again) put me at risk of having my entire microSD card wiped due to a driver oddity in the official exfat update for the Switch, meaning I would lose my save files and be forced to reinstall 200GB of data

Did I really need to switch? I have a feeling I didn't, but the fear ate me alive lol

Thats a good question and i also read such posts on other threads regarding exfat.
I have my 400GB microsd card on exfat + SX and never experienced any problem within SX + XCI or any other homebrew app except one:
Retroarch 1.7.5 crashes very often just during browsing of games and so on... (during it loads preview images and so on)
Dont know if it's related to the exfat "issue" discussed in other threads or just small bugs /glitches of RetroArch (because it was just released officially).

Would also be interested in an technical proof that exfat is the issue on retroarch,
and if a switch to fat32 really solves the issue.

thx

I can tell you at the very least I have not experienced any crashing on RetroArch since switching to fat32
