Hi everyone. So I know about 3DS.hacks.guide and will use it or Frogminer to hack my 3DS if necessary BUT I wanted to speak to the actual community about the current state of hacking and whether or not its worth it. Nintendo recently sent out a ban wave and released updates to quell piracy (which is completely understandable) but is it still possible to effectively use CFW and programs such as FBI to safely hack and play games on your 3DS? If I were to use Frogminer, would I still be able to install FBI and therefore install CIAs? I understand the risk of bricking but is the risk of getting banned as high if you are careful online and only play games in your region? If I shouldnt speak of some stuff then please let me know and I will redact. I looked at the forum rules and I am not asking for any info but rather just the risk factors and viability of hacking my 3DS. I recently hacked my WiiU and its been amazing but would love to do the same for my 3DS.

- The process is very safe as long as you read carefully, bricking isn't nearly as prevalent nowadays.
- The only way to really get banned nowadays is if you use cheats or some kind of modification online, otherwise you're fine. If you backup your Localfriendcode file and use a public one, you can unban to your original if you want to.
- For the legal part, it's safe as homebrew itself is in that middle road where it can lead to illegal stuff (pirating) and perfectly legal stuff (custom themes).

TL;DR = it's guuuuuud

lol I appreciate your feedback. Alright. Is Frogminer a permanent hack that wont necessarily need to be initiated each time? On my WiiU I have it so I have to tap Haxchi each time I want to use CFW but it doesnt really bother me. And can I easily install FBI using the Frogminer CFW?

Regardless of what method you use, you should end up with b9s and luma. B9s is always launched on boot, so you don't need to worry. FBI and any other homebrew can be easily installed.

Will using the Frogminer method allow me to install both of those? I havent really looked into it yet.

Maybe a "little to late", but 3DS scene is one of the best scenes of all modern consoles because of it's active developement of homebrew.
With the guide you can install it pretty easy, and for free (which is awesome).
Boot9Strap (or B9S) because is a low-level exploit, and it launches before even the NAND is reading data, is cold-booteable by default, so you won't have the necessity to launch another crap to start CFW.
Luma3DS is the preferred CFW, which is somewhat in an hiatus for now, only updating when a mayor firmware rolls up if the boot needs to be fixed.
The bricks only happen when you do an old tutorial, follow any kind of video tutorials (because they get old fast) or you mess around and don't follow the steps as shown in the guide.
The bans (as Fusion Luigi said) are rare, and only happen when you cheat online, play a game before release, or try to give you items and crap in free-to-play games.
And nope… in regard of the "banwave", the last banwave was in March (I think so) and haven't been anyone since. When Nintendo rolled up the 11.8.0 version of the system, it wasn't exactly to ban anybody, and actually I haven't heard of a ban in months, but yeah, the 11.8.0 changed everything in regard of the CDN and how it worked, to broke freeShop, tikShop, and so many aplications that let you download games from Nintendo's servers.

In conclution, installing CFW (or "hacking", although technically is "cracking") your console worths it, and CFW'ed is by far the best way to have a 3DS right now.

Thanks for the feedback! I believe I have successfully hacked my 3DS using the Frogminer method (Luma and Boot9Strap both showed success as far as I can tell lol) and can successfully launch Homebrew from Sub Wars but something isnt right. Before I could launch the frogminer tool just fine but now I tap it and it just flashes and goes back to the Homebrew menu. The same thing goes with the FBI launcher. I tap it and it flashes, crashes and goes back. Have I screwed something up? I added a whole bunch of CIAs to my cia folder and copied everything in the "Finalizing Setup" part of the guide and now I cant do anything...

Edit: Now I cant even get into the Homebrew menu. I dont know what happened. Perhaps things are gettings corrupted somehow? Just now when I checked the Sub wars folder, one of the folders containing some of the games data had just diappeared. I had to copy from a backup I had made. It let me get back into the homebrew menu but then, again, now its just showing a black screen when I open Sub wars. Is it possible that the profile and mii connection was deleted somehow? And if so, is there a way for me to safely start over? Can I delete Sub wars and copy over the .sav file I had before? Im freaking out cuz I dont want to brick my system.

After you install cfw, it's normal for steelhax not to work. The "Finalizing Setup" section should show you how to run 3dsx hombrew, luma3ds style.

Haha yeaaa that was the problem. I managed to get everything up and running. Installed the HB launcher and FBI everything. I was so relieved. My next question, however, is whether I can delete Sub Wars? Is it pretty much unless? Would delete it affect anything?

You could delete it, sure.
It could also be useful to keep if somehow you lost cfw, unlikely as that is. It's not guaranteed to be on the eshop forever.
The only real downside of keeping it is it takes up around 400MBs.

Quick question, if I wanted to play the CIA of Mario Kart 7 on my 3DS but take it online, would that be safe to do? I read that it is but how does Nintendo connect players online? Is it my client (i.e. game ID) or according to my 3DS and the device ID or according to my NNID?

It's perfectly fine. Think of it as you using a cartridge, Nintendo can't tell if you got the game unless they physically see it. If you install a cia, they can't really tell so online is safe with your NNID.

Trying to download B9s through the Sub Wars game. I followed the guide and went to final launch the app again and it launches but the I get:

"An error has occurred, forcing the software to close. They system will now restart."

Not sure why it is not working
