Has anyone had any luck with being able to capture Game Boy or Game Boy Color virtual console games using KitKat or Snickerstream without the nasty discoloration?

According to the dev of KitKat, it's a bug with either the NTR firmware or BootNTR itself that causes a filter to be applied to the frames sent when GB/GBC/NES virtual console is running, so it has nothing to do with the client/PC side of things. The games look fine on the n3DS screen itself and for original Game Boy games, you can manually color correct them back to monochrome in OBS....but it would be awesome to be able to capture VC games without this issue, especially since nothing will fix the discoloration for Game Boy Color stuff. I know homebrew emulators work just fine; I'd still like to be able to play my legit VC copy of Shantae and capture it, though.

(And if you were wondering, Game Gear's Virtual Console emulator is completely different and works fine with NTR streaming)

Thanks but as mentioned in my original post, I'm well aware of the homebrew emulators. They work great but I'm specifically wondering if anyone knows of a fix for the NTR bug.

Assuming a future release of NTR streaming plugin with the fix won't be available anytime soon and that the color compensation prior to the final output video feed is out of the question, your alternative is to check if those emulators are suitable substitutions without having that bug.

I'm afraid it's either that or video capture card at this point. *

* Unless someone chimes in with a known fix!

That's why I'm asking. Color correcting isn't out of the question for original Game Boy games; as I said the main problem is I'd like to stream/record something like Shantae, which is a Game Boy Color title I own legit from the eShop. I'm not crazy about just downloading the ROM from somewhere and then loading it via mGBA on my 3DS because at that point, the solution isn't any better than just directly recording mGBA or SameBoy on my PC. I'm trying to do things in a semi-legit way wherever possible.

If you already bought and own the game, why wouldn't it be legit if you go and download it from the Internet? If it makes it any easier, you can dump the *.gbc rom from your Virtual Console *.cia.

If your game is the USA version with the Title ID 00040000000BE500, use fuse-3ds or GodMode9 to extract:
  • 0000.00000000/romfs/rom/CGBB3AE0.963
Rename that as *.gbc. It'll have the CRC32 hash of E994B59B which is the exact clean dump you'll find online.

It's violating copyright laws no matter what. If the ROM dump didn't come from the person who has it, there's no Fair Use argument to be had. Also, let's be honest, if I only wanted to record myself playing a downloaded ROM, using OBS to capture Retroarch on a PC would get way better results.

Haha, thanks, I might give this a try.

If you really want to play it on official vc on 3ds you could try streaming with hzmod.
Thank you so much! Performance isn't quite as good as NTR in terms of performance but it gets the color right. Might be workable for some GBC games. Glad to see NTR/KitKat/Snickerstream isn't the only game in town too. A little software diversity means mutual problem solving if there's cooperation.
