You know what would be cool? Converting your Wii Shop Channel into a more respectable Homebrew Browser.
I mean, seriously though, who doesn’t want to browse WSC and it’s cheerfully brainwashing music for Homebrew instead of WiiWare/Virtual Console? That’s where we guys come in.

We are a small team that has been researching the inner workings of the Wii Shop Channel, and we’re now getting closer and closer to transmitting Homebrew over the Wii Shop Channel and rebranding it as The Open Shop Channel. Are we another revival concept going nowhere? Not this time.

What is OSC?
We’re a replacement of Wii Shop Channel and an alternative to Homebrew Browser. OSC will be a patched version of WSC that directs to our services.

Why though?
With the Wii Shop Channel's closure in 2019 and Homebrew Repo services becoming outdated, The Open Shop Channel's purpose is to give both Homebrew Developers and Users a more comfortable experience for downloading and installing homebrew.

Who are we?
We are a group of homebrew enthusiasts that want to provide the easiest way to get homebrew in the safest way possible. The team so far consists of (in alphabetical order):

Alright, no actual announcement or GBATemp post about a revival should be complete without our current progress roadmap.

  1. We started as an internal project at Disconnect24 during March 2018, but when the idea and proof of concept that the WSC can be modified to external servers, we separated into our own standalone project in hopes that the project doesn’t become endorsed with other revival services.
  2. After becoming independent, we began collecting and organising the Wii Shop Channel’s JavaScript API into a library we decided to call “WiiCore.js”, after we discovered some very intriguing functions on the WSC’s OSS-Auth pages, we eventually started fishing out most of the SOAP that WSC had hidden within, which would not have been possible without the generous NAND donations from the community.
  3. By August, we were almost done sorting all of the SOAP into it’s own repo on our GitHub Organisation and development on a custom SOAP Server began. We could have used Nintendo’s recommendation of AXIS, but we thought it would have been easier to develop a SOAP Server designed specifically to work with the Wii Shop Channel.
  4. September/October came about and our SOAP Server was basically ready to go, we finished up modifying the WSC’s DOL, Banner and we are now mainly focusing on finishing the rest of the JS collection and setting up an SQL Database for SOAP Accounts and Homebrew.

We are looking for homebrew developers that are interested in having their Homebrew published on The Open Shop Channel, you can contact us by joining our Discord. (Invite Code: by6mR5N ) There are guidelines that your Homebrew need to abide by to make sure we aren’t allowing explicit, legally infringing or offensive software from being published.

If you want to learn about our projects within OSC, check out our website which is oscwii(dot)org to find out more.

Our GitHub Organisation is OpenShopChannel, that contains all our open source software and a lot of what we’ve discovered about WSC.

See you later!
(No, it’s not released yet, we plan to release on WSC’s Shutdown day.)

UPDATE: OSC is now a part of RiiConnect24 and is no longer an independent service.

Note 2: We will never, under no circumstance, ever host or distribute WiiWare or Virtual Console. That is illegal, and stands against what we are trying to be. We are a homebrew network, not a warez network of any kind.

The sole reason I'm following RiiConnect is their awesome work at keeping an old console alive.
Reliving the days where you'd boot it up to check news and weather <З

Excellent work guys. I'm sure it will be a good project.
I offer myself to translate into Spanish, if I have taken that idea into account.
Greetings from Chile
When it's all ready and we are done with the major work on it, we will most likely accept / ask for translations and focus on such "additional" features.
We don't right now though, so we will make sure to contact you if we ever do!

We're not RiiConnect24 so we can't comment on behalf, but I'm sure they are glad to have you using their services! I too also enjoy viewing news and weather, and personally cannot wait for Nintendo Channel. :yaywii:

Projects like this should get as much attention as possible.
I'd still waiting for the day that a replacement XBLive comes for the original Xbox.

Old consoles should not be forgotten!
Keep up the good work lads!

Wew, I remember original XBOX and playing GTA III. I used to always go through the menus cause they looked eerily cool.

Anyways, thank you for your interest! :ha:

I could see this spurring a renewed interest in developing/porting homebrew games for the Wii. Very nice! :yaywii:

Do you intend for this to be installed as a direct replacement for the WSC, or installed alongside it with a separate Channel ID?

We will allow for both options, using KcrPL's patcher. You can see it in action here:

So you are reusing the download code + other functions from the Wii Shop Channel? Should be a lot better and crash-free. Definitely sounds interesting! Show some screenshots/videos if you are ready :P

We’re currently planning a stream, which will contain a progress update about where we are up to.
For now, here are some older screenshots before we began working on SOAP. We’ve since redesigned the buttons to look better along with other enhancements.

The project sort of shifted gears at some point to become a homebrew "Homebrew Browser" replacement that doesn't override the Wii Shop Channel anymore. Doesn't seem to be a lot of progress updates lately besides the news of that restructuring.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
