Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 headed to the PlayStation 4

If you haven’t already experienced the Trails of Cold Steel series on PlayStation Vita or PC, XSEED will be bringing the first two games in the series to the PlayStation 4. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 will be available in North America and Europe early next year both digitally and physically. The retail versions of the game will be available as separate purchases, both offering a steelbook, a select soundtrack, and a coin/pin. As an added bonus, the PlayStation 4 version of the game will include both the English dub cast, as well as an option for original Japanese voices.

Among the nations on the Zemurian continent, the mighty Erebonian Empire has been quick to outwardly stake its claim militarily; yet politically, ugly bouts of internal conflict between the upper class and commoners attempting to rise to power have been steadily intensifying day by day. The Noble and Reformist Factions have been none too kind to one another over the years, and tensions between the two only stand to worsen if compromises aren’t made in the very near future.

Rean Schwarzer, like any other citizen of the Imperial Nation, is no stranger to these rising conflicts: the class system has been deeply embedded into the hearts of every Erebonian since the days of old. As a seventeen-year-old student preparing for his new life at Thors Military Academy, however, he notices that his crimson uniform differs from the standard ones issued to his peers—typically green for commoners, and white for nobles.

Enter, Class VII of Thors Military Academy. For the first time in the prestigious academy’s history, rank means nothing and skill means everything. With nine hand-picked students of various backgrounds and abilities, Rean included, Class VII readies itself to dive deep into the political quagmire that threatens not only them, but the Empire as a whole.

Is this game any good? I mean I see FALCOM, and think YS games yeah woo hoo. But I don't want to make the mistake and think that. (kinda wish Falcom would just make a new POPFUL MAIL game.) :)
This is an amazing series. Think Persona done by Falcom, sort of? Anything in their Legend of Heroes series is awesome.

I never played a persona game despite mistakenly buying Persona 4 Golden on psvita. :ninja:

But yeah, Falcom has some good sleeper hits under their belt, just wasn't sure of new stuff I never heard of.

Because it's a really great game :yaypsp:
I wouldn't know. Never had any attachments to the games Atlus make. I usually avoid them for it's higher than normal difficulty according to word of mouth. I tried one called Shin megami tenshi nocturne and it wasn't a fun experience.

Also I only bought that persona game cause I thought it was that console fighting game one by arc system works but portable for vita. It was on sale on psn and I bought it with some others that I guess forgot to take out the cart before I shopping during a flash sale. :ninja:

I haven't played a main shin megami tensei game (outside of a bit of Apocalypse) but afaik, SMT and Persona aren't really the same thing.
Persona 4 Golden is pretty easy if you play on the easiest difficulty.

As for the fighting game, that's Persona 4 Arena (and its sequel, Ultimax) but that's only available on PS3 and Xbox 360. I wouldn't recommend playing them until after you play through Persona 4 Golden.

Is persona 4 that important? I mean what's that rpg got that this one does or doesn't and does better or worst? I honestly don't have the accessibility to play the game at the moment. I bought it on psn and I don't have room to fit it on my vita since I didn't realize many games would be large file size. I doubt it's that similar to Persona, it's made by Falcom which doesn't seem to have similar games as far as the two companies well known titles.

Well, I actually haven't played Trails of Cold Steel yet. It's been in my backlog for a while and at this point I'll probably just wait for the PS4 release.
I just think Persona 4 Golden is the best game of all time and only mentioned it because I saw the game being brought up when you asked if this game was any good.

But anyways, we're severely off topic now. Play or don't play the game if you want. I just don't think you'll regret it if you do.

The story is very good. I played 1 and 2 on psvita, but 3 n 4 will only be released on PS4.
For me, it is in my top 3 JRPGs.

played both on ps vita enjoyed them quite a bit although the way the games end always leave me with the "crap now i have to wait for the sequel" feeling because they are honestly mostly story based since the gameplay can get repeatative once you break the game by upping (forgot her name its been so long) claymore girls stats with everyones abilities and have her equiped with the sphere that doubles damage on her first attack.

I'm actually really excited for this. I bought the games on Ps3, Vita and PC. (So between Trails 1 and Trails 2, I bought 6 full priced games) and I am willing to buy another copy of both just to get them on PS4 with japanese voices. However, the reason i'm actually excited-- is because this shows that XSeed is still working on the Trails of Cold Steel series and that NISA isn't going to be picking it up. The only reason for them to bring ToCS I/II is so that the fanbase and the ps4 audience have access to 1/2 on both ps4/pc before launching ToCS III on PC/PS4. So this should be a sure-sign that we're getting Sen III localized.

For people who haven't played the games, they're absolutely amazing. I've always had SMT/Persona as my very favorite games and Atlus as my favorite dev studio, and ToCS was the first RPG Series that made me seriously question whether or not I liked it more than Shin Megami Tensei. Even to this moment i'm not 100% certain, but either way, it's a fantastic series that I love dearly. If you played other Falcom games, don't expect the same kind of writing. They put a LOT more effort into the story of legend of heroes games than they do any of there other series. The YS games are fun, but not really meant to be deep. Tokyo Xanadu is definitely pretty weeb-like and is about as fun as a basic visual novel, story wise. Mostly like YS where gameplay is the critical piece. Trails of Cold Steel (Legend of Heroes in general really..) is a whole other beast. The first three games introduce a continent with a major focus on one of the countries-- then the next two games focus on a separate country adding way more depth/backstory to the world. THEN we get trails of cold steel focusing on yet another country explaining what was going on in Erebonia during the Crossbell games. There are tons of other main countries that all affect the story, but we learn a lot about the 'main' country of each arc. The next one is going to switch to Calvard Republic so we can learn about their culture/problems.

Long story short, the games keep adding way more depth to the history, culture, lore and context of the world with a great (fairly large actually) cast of characters. It's wonderful.

So is these game have anything stand out from dozen other JRPG? Never play the series and I never really enjoy any JRPG story really (except SE game. I like their cheesy story for some reason)
