In an anime context, trap isn't a derogatory term. It's simply a bait and switch trope. They aren't trans, they just look like a girl. 99% of the time it's the dude that goes 'im a dude actually, I just look like a girl' everyone gets shocked, lol anime tropes.

Technically in English (to my knowledge) you're supposed to use they/them, with "it" being used to descripe objects and as such some people can become offended if you call them by that (Not all, but I've seen it around).

One of the main problems I see a lot is when the term is applied to any character or person that is androgynous, as opposed to ones who are following the "bait and switch" trope

AFAIK they/them is used for referring to royalty/similar positions and when a person's gender is not known.
