My ds mode on my new 3ds is broken because I've installed cfw on it using CTRnand. Then.. one day.. without realising I had installed cfw I factory reset my 3ds. And now i'm stuck on 11.8 with no cfw installed and ds mode broken. I really want to install cfw on my 3ds.. but since seedminer won't work because of the ds mode.. i'm pretty much stuck. I do have installed homebrew via steelminer though. Can anybody tell me how/if I can install cfw??

Factory reset doesn't remove cfw. Does anything show up when you hold start or select on boot? The luma version should be somewhere on the select menu.

I downgraded my 3ds to 9.2, installed emunand. Later, I reset my 3ds on my sysNand and updated it. Now my ds mode doesn't work anymore (ds games, ds download and play, etc.) and Luma doesn't start when I hold down the select or the start button.

hmm something doesnt sound right... you had downgraded to 9.2 (this'd indicate atleast A9LH) then updated to 11.8 and you Lost CFW .. it'd sound like something wasnt Preventing an overwrite by OFW.. or somethinsg just missing. do you have still on your SD Card a Arm9loaderhax.bin? (this'd indicate A9LH) can you boot w/o the SD Card? (could mean CFW's boot file is on CTRNAND/Entrypoint was overwritten)

your DS mode's broken? looks like you must re install TWLFirm (I would be careful it is a torrent on 3ds.guide and I got hit by an AUP violation by my ISP so they're watching that file best to use a vpn even for that

When did you hack your ds and with what?
Have you tried 7.0.5?
It was probably around 1,5 year ago when I installed cfw on my 3ds. I think I used A9HL but I'm not sure. I downgraded my 3ds from 11.2 to 9.2 and installed EmuNand. It was all perfectly fine, until I reset my 3ds and updated to the latest version etc.. I think I used menuhax, I don't think I used luma..

I don't have any files left from that cfw session.. :/

Can I reinstall TWLFirm without cfw? because fbi won't work for me right now.

ok so you had rxtools (or any other old school cfw) and you accidentally updated sysnand so sadly you dont have cfw . . . at this point to proceed you need a ntrboot compatible ds flashcard read more here ntrboot - 3DS Hacks Guide

I'm sorry for my late reply, but can I use a ntrboot compatible ds flashcard when ds mode is broken? If not, are there any alternatives?

Yes. No problem. Just the name ntrboot says all. NTR-001 is the first DS-model and DS-cartridges all have names starting with NTR (if not DSi enhanced or DSi exclusive).

What you do with ntrboot is booting from a special ntr-cartridge. Normally this would have to be signed with a key only Nintendo knows, but fortunately big N made a mistake and ntrboothax allows starting other software as well.

To cut a long story short: You boot ntrboothax instead of the Home Menu. You can have total nonsense on your NAND, it will still boot. It does not rely on the DS-mode despite using a custom DS-cartridge.
3dbrew.org/wiki/Main_Page said:
[…]while ntrboothax allows for ARM9 arbitrary code execution on any 3DS-family console regardless of system firmware version (or even its presence at all).
As for alternatives: On firmware ≥ 11.4 the current options are:
  • Frogminer (not in your case because DS-mode is broken)
  • ntrboot→ recommended
  • hardmod (if you're experienced with soldering)

To brick or not to brick, that is the Q... I'm tempted to delete my entire SysNAND, uninstall custom firmware, and try NTRboot hacking it back with trusty ol' R4i Gold 3DS RTS flashcart to prove if that's truly the case. Hmm.

This goes a little off topic here. Please don't. In theory it should work. You said it yourself:
Even if you were to physically remove the onboard NAND found on the 3DS motherboard, it is also possible to boot the 3DS with an EmuNAND / RedNAND (emulated / redirected) setup on a SD card through the SD card slot reader. EmuNAND is something like those bootable USB pen drives you'll commonly see testing and installing desktop Linux. You can try testing an EmuNAND by creating one with 3DS Multi EmuNAND Creator.

Either methods of fixing your 3DS is doable so long as your Bootloader is intact, which is the 3DS equivalent of a computer motherboard's BIOS.
But what would that be good for? And… if the NAND is completely erased, NAND_minsize.bin could have missing parts… or…?? If I just had not written in that way above.

@Redhackxs : ntrboot should work in your case. That's all you need to know. Forget what I said about garbage on the NAND.

Thanks, I'll try NTRboot then. :)

Use my advise to troubleshoot

-Take the sd card out of the 3ds and see if it still boots

-If it doesnt then b9s is still installed, which means you are still on cfw when you have boot.firm on the root of your sd card.

- if it does then did you put a boot.firm on the ctrnand?

-If boot.firm was on the ctrnand and it still boots, then you are still on cfw

-if boot.firm wasnt on the ctr nand and it still boots, then b9s has been uninstalled.

Eh, curiosity got the better of me. I ran the uninstall hax gm9 script, deleted all the files in the CTRNAND, TWLN, and TWLP drives, and turned off the 3DS.

Battery, flashcart, and SD cards were removed. I tried booting the n3DSXL with only the battery reinserted. Only black screens showed up, of course.

With my DS flashcart already flashed with NTRboot and SD card back in (SafeB9SInstaller renamed boot.firm), I rehacked the system in a 2nd attempt at magnet + button combo.

So to answer the question and prove theory as fact, yes you can NTRboot hack a 2DS/3DS system even its SysNAND is fully deleted and custom firmware is no longer installed.

to ease his mind . . . he passed out this advice repeatedly although he never once tried/tested it . . . its peace of mind as well as conformation that advice like this is indeed viable
