Super Mario Party won't be playable in handheld mode

If you were hoping to play Super Mario Party on your Nintendo Switch while on the go, or with a Switch Pro Controller, then you might have to put those plans on hold. The game just got its official website, and it specifies that players won't be able to experience the game in handheld mode at all--only TV or tabletop. This is due to the fact that the minigames require motion controls from the Joy-Cons. This also rules out using the Joy-Con grip, as well. Super Mario Party will launch on October 5th.

I... I really dontd know what to say at this point....
It's probably because the whole game is just a big fucking gimmick which uses the joycons technology, just like 1, 2 switch.
Yeah but that's kinda what Mario Party has always been lol.

Has it though? The N64 games didn't really make a gimmick of anything unless you want to consider having a control stick as one, and the GameCube ones had the mic you could disable easily in the options. Wii and Wii U is where they played up the systems' gimmicks. If I have to be standing up to wave around my arms for Mario Party, I'm out.

the reason i hated mario party 9 was the motion controls. i only liked the part were you don't need to aim at the tv. basically games that only need the sideways wii remote. i can't imagine a mario party game where every minigame needs motion controls

Okay, so why is the Pro Controller out exactly? It does have gyro, it has more than enough buttons to act like a Joy-Con and it doesn't require the Switch to be in handheld mode, obviously.

Aw I thought at first we might be seeing something come the other way and not work in handheld, however now I see "tabletop" is a thing.

Oh well. No online and now this. Odds changed on it not being the thing to give the series a kick up the arse like some initially reckoned.

I'm actually glad this is docked mode only because I only play my switch in docked mode since I have a family of six. Can't wait to get this.

Makes sense. I just hope they don't try to fit motion controls everywhere, even when it doesn't fit. Mario Party 8 had some pretty ridiculous minigames where you basically used the Wiimote as a joystick, or worse, you had to twist it like a key to move, and they weren't fun.
