Hello!

Been playing Mario Kart 7 with some friends recently and one of them is still using download & play. He found a copy of Mario Kart 7 online for an ok price... but it's a little different than the usual US version. The cover is like this: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZbpcNR_4gzI/maxresdefault.jpg

Apparently, it is the Canadian version, which I wasn't even aware of. It even says it has French as an optional language. I don't even remember if I could change the language in Mario Kart 7. My question is... would my friend be able to play local multiplayer with the US version - the version everyone have here? I imagine he would, but I couldn't confirm it anywhere... I would like to be sure, since he's only buying it to play with us.

We already asked the seller and she couldn't confirm either.

i can't say for sure for a specific title, but in general, Canadian versions of games just have to include a french manual (which on a game these days ANY manual is a rarity) the game itself is unchanged. Wacky quebec laws are to "blame" or they couldn't sell the game there even to english speakers  If anything, the game might be in French or even Spanish, if that's the language setting on the system (easy to change, no hacking needed), but that's true of a lot of 3ds games all over the western hemisphere. In europe they'll have other languages like german and a few others.

I see.
I was uncertain about the 'unchanged' since there's no mention of French language in my copy, but I tried changing the system language and the game also changed the language. So yes, even US copies have French as an optional language. It's just tied to the system language. This Canadian version might be the same. The packaging may be the only difference.

Thanks for the help. When he gets the game, I'll post if we had any problems with local multiplayer.

just so you know, having 2 copies of the game for local multiplayer is worthless, there is only download play or online play, yep, im not kidding, oh and download play is region locked while online play isnt.

I'm aware of Download & Play. But my friend is just tired of always being the Shy Guy with the same default kart :D
Not only that, but if I recall correctly, Download & Play makes for longer loading times between races. If everyone have the game, it'll load faster. This would be perfect for us, since we're always playing during lunch break.

as i said, you dont have other options, unless you have a good internet connection, there is no local play.

Well, my friend ended up getting an US version. We had some problems with the seller, so he went for another option. Everything is working great now!
But from what I gather... it wouldn't be a problem if he got the Canadian version. It seems that only the packaging is different. Since even the US version has French language, it must be the exact same version as the Canadian one.
