My Nintendo Switch has been running on ReiNX and was never connected to any wifi nor it ever will be. I still regularly buy games but i was wondering if it's possible to update them? Do i have to use a cdn downloader or something to get the latest update of a game?

You can either get the update NSPs using cdn downloaders like CDNSP (there's an option to download the update only NSP, and you can set it to get the latest update), or sites like the dark place.

Ah thanks! So if i install those updates they will work for my original carts?

do you mean the update message?

No i don't want to force any update message, since that will confirm that i'm connected to the internet. :P I just want to run the latest versions for the games that i own on a cartridge while staying offline.

Yep, as long as title IDs are the same.
You can check the title ID of your carts on the NSWDB site, and CDNSP also shows the title ID when you click the game.

The title IDs can be different if the game has different title IDs for different region releases (which is quite rare now).

If your switch will NEVER be connected to wifi, why are you concerned about bans? Do you have a Switch Account tied to the console? I assume not, if you were never online.

My experience has been that on my console with NO user account tied to it, Nintendo sends me over the air game updates automatically for every game I have installed (NSPs). I haven't tried inserting one of my legit cartridges to see if it auto updates, but if Ninty is updating my illegit NSPs, it would be nuts for them not to update my legit carts.

I can't tell for sure if my console is banned, since I have no account and thus can't actually connect to anything that would tell me "hey youre banned", but the updates keep coming. I even had some sort of corruption after installing with SXOS and the game had a cloud icon over it... It said the game needs to install missing files before it can run. So, I clicked yes, and it installed the missing files (from Nintendo's servers) and the game was playable. Hollow Knight, if you're curious.

I've heard that all bans are CDN bans now, and if I was CDN-banned I can't see why they would continue sending me OTA updates automatically. Thus I presume my console isn't banned, which is pretty nuts. Or maybe it is banned, and it doesn't matter because I can still do anything I want on it. Either way...

In short, if you aren't online and never will be, you must not be afraid of banning. So how about just try enabling the wifi, but with no nintendo account, and see what happens. Worst case scenario, Nintendo bans your console and you get no updates, in which case just continue as you have been. You are "self-banned" anyway. Best case, all those updates come flowing in with no effort on your part, and maybe you don't even get banned.

I wonder if Nintendo has no way of telling that I don't own the games, since I have no account, so they don't autoban me. I presume that in the fabled future CDN update, they may tie console certificates to owned games via a database query, in which case they will almost certainly ban your console if you try to download stuff with a cert that doesn't own the game. But, they aren't doing that yet, which might explain why they keep sending me updates. Even then, Nintendo has no way of knowing whether you own the cart or not, since it is a physical object, and banning you for trying to download an update to your cart while staying logged out would be NUTS, even for Nintendo, and would be a messed up policy change for people who don't like having nintendo accounts, or buy a Switch for their kids and only use local accounts. Imagine if your kid, with no online account, tries to update their legit cartridge of mario kart and the console gets banned. I don't think they would do that, ensuring that cart updates should be possible for all consoles, with or without accounts, until such point as they start requiring nintendo accounts just to download updates to carts!

And if you are hoping to eventually go legit (if never isn't never?) and wipe the switch and go online, everything I've read thus far says that's a pipe dream. If you've used homebrew or pirated you can just assume you'll be banned eventually, at least if you are using a Nintendo account, right? Don't worry about it.

Try it! You don't really have anything to lose, imo.

I've recovered my stock nand succesfully a couple of times now and i'm still not banned. I just avoid using wifi whenever i'm doing something that is considered banworthy and just erase the whole system/recover my nand whenever i want to go online. My theory is that Nintendo will never receive any logs or any other kind of "illegal" info from me, or there has to be some kind of hidden partition that doesn't get erased and stores this kind of stuff that i'm not aware off.. I'll be using the online services when the new Pokemon game is released. Until then i'll stay offline, enjoy my homebrew (RetroNX/Retroarch and ScummVM) and update my carts with nsp update files.

Are you reusing the same NAND backup each time, or do you make a new NAND backup every time before you "go underground"?

I'm sporting the theory that "continuity" is important as well (e.g. if the last time your Switch connected to Nintendo, it sent a NEW log not present in your old NAND backup, and this log "disappears" because you restore that NAND backup, it MIGHT be dangerous)... so I'm curious.

I'm using that exact method:
1. Original NAND backup.
1b. - CFW in permanent airplane mode
2. Revert to 1 so it's in a clean state again and just use it as a "regular" switch while being online. This way 1b never happened.
3. Airplane mode and start at 1 if i want to use CFW again.

To me this seems like the safest method currently available.

Okay, in your original post you said you hadn't connected to wifi and never would. If you plan to try going online later, it's a different story. Restoring your nand while staying completely offline would be the most likely way to avoid a ban, though I have no idea if that is a guarantee of safety.

Personally I don't give two shits if I get banned, and I fully recommend my method to anyone who also doesn't care (or has a second switch for homebrew). I'd be curious to know if this is repeatable, or if there's something strange going on with my switch. I have never heard anyone on this forum say that they get OTA updates from Nintendo on every game (legit or not) while not being logged in. Not that I went out of my way to look.

Time consumption for switching?
