This is AWESOME! Just tried on DK64 and works without issue. Time to adjust all of my Wii U VC titles.
:D
I reacted exactly the same way lol
First game I tried was DK64, and OH MY what a surprise I got when I saw it in full widescreen glory!
Even more when changing the setting to proper Widescreen in-game.

Makes me hate Nintendo even more from locking us out of such glory, fucking assholes.

Wait, Resident Evil 2 works?

Wait, Resident Evil 2 works?
Nah.
I wish.

Only one that works is the japan release, Biohazard 2, but that one only works on first boot.
Once you boot it again, it lags a LOT, to the point of being unplayable.
But if you want to take a look at it, try injection Biohazard 2 with the official .ini and give it a go in the first boot.
It's really neat to see it running that well, only problem is that damn lag on every subsequent boot of the title.

Can this be done for VC titles that aren't N64 games? Has anyone looked into trying that?

From what I've found, only the N64 VC titles are set up in this way with the FrameLayout.arc file. Games from other systems don't have that file despite being held to the 4:3 ratio with the dark filter. It's probably a different yet to be discovered method for changing those games.

From what I learned, when i downloaded the tool for this function, it was at a mario kart wii hacking wiki used for modding the game. Anyone else find it odd that the tool was for mario kart but is used to edit a wii u virtual console title display settings? Nintendo recycling programming for use in other things.

GREAT NEWS! (This post should probably be added to the first post) I've found how to remove the brightness and get widescreen on DS VC titles on both the TV and the Gamepad as well!!

P8eMni7.jpg

(If you aren't aware, this is Yoshi's Island DS)

The method is quite similar, but still a little different, locate your DS game and enter the same content folder as you do for the N64 games. You'll need to go one folder deeper now and enter the 0010 folder. From there, grab the configuration_cafe.json file. Open this file with Notepad++ or similar application. Go to the bottom of the file to the Display setting, change the value for brightness from 80 to 100, that gets rid of the dark filter. Now scroll up a little and find the "VCM_LAYOUT_9_EXPLANATION" label, change the TV size from 928 696 to 1280 720, and the position to 0 0, then change the part below labeled as "drc" for the target, so that the size is 854 480 and the position is 0 0. Then save the .json file and transfer it back!

You can edit the layout and sizes of the other options, but my favorite layout is the Top screen on the TV and the bottom on the Gamepad, so that's all I've focused on changing here.

Oh dude, you should have asked, this was already known for like a year or so ago.
The same applies for NES and SNES VC titles.
Only one which still didn't have widescreen was N64, which you found out :P

Oh lol, I saw someone asking in this topic about if this method worked for other VC files and I knew it didn't. Didn't realize there already was a solution for the DS games though, but all the same I was never aware of it and now I can update all my DS games. Still, the NES and SNES games have a different file setup that I can't as easily decipher, so if you can explain to me or point me in the right direction for making NES, SNES, and GBA games widescreen without the dark filter, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! (And when I say widescreen for GBA, I just mean taking up the whole screen, I'm aware some might consider it's native output to be widescreen)

Here my friend:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/understanding-and-changing-snes-vc-rpx-settings.425474/

There you should find how to modify NES and SNES VC titles for widescreen.
I'm not sure if the dark filter was ever removed from those, also I am not sure if GBA was touched upon, but it's worth checking that thread out for more info. :)

All the same I'm not seeing the information of what I did for VC DS widescreen and no brightness elsewhere, so even if this information was known beforehand, it doesn't seem like it was widely spread. So I hope my little post does help others looking for widescreen in their DS VC games on the Wii U.

The DS stuff has been mentioned around in several threads, so it's kind of hard to pinpoint the exact place where it started, but perhaps this is a good reference:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-ds-vc-custom-layouts.427284/

You can even do custom screen layouts if you want to.

Yeah, I mentioned that the other screen layouts could be edited, but just went with the obvious preference of top screen on TV, bottom screen on gamepad. Also, how did they neglect to notice the brightness feature? Ah well, guess that's what I'm here for lol.
