Nintendo Switch reaches new milestone with 5 million units sold in Japan

NX.JPG

The Nintendo Switch hardware sales have officially exceeded 5 million mark in Japan! To be exact, 5,007,368 units of the handheld-home console hybrid were sold in a span of 79 weeks dating from March 3, 2017 to Sept. 2, 2018. Along with this report came the list of the top 5 bestselling games to date:
  1. Splatoon 2: 2,621,928 copies
  2. Super Mario Odyssey: 1,788,228 copies
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 1,738,502 copies
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 1,065,780 copies
  5. Kirby Star Allies: 591,721 copies
What do you make of these figures? Do you think that the Switch will keep its momentum?

Hmmm... Looking at it I think I start to see a typical Gaussian distribution with a little skew to the right...
But perhaps that's because the title of Breath of the Wild is a bit too long /s

PS: I think the Switch keeping its momentum depends on new games to be announced or shown, lately I am seeing too little, please Nintendo show some footage or gameplay or teaser, whatever from Metroid Prime 4 to keep my interest going.

According to Wikipedia ps4's was launched on Nov 2013, until July 2018 it has reached 81 million units sold across the globe. well, is Nintendo's Hybrid able to reach that milestone in 5 years?

Maybe they will reach it.
Everything they have do is keep interesting games coming.
Though lately I've been perceiving a slowdown.
Right as it is now I don't think they are going to make it.
Over half a year now all I hear is Smash Bros this and that.
I know it is a beloved (yet a bit niche) franchise, but anyway...
Do we only want to hear about Smash Bros?

Fighting games can only sell as much.
Ultimately, the only other thing I hear about are ports.
Come on guys! What's next?
Kart games? Sure, Mario Kart Double Dash deluxe or something, many people like that one.
I don't really want more ports.
No... well, perhaps some, but in between new games...
Games that perhaps were announced already, but we haven't heard news about in a long time.

What can I say...
Happily I don't have much free time, so I can't get mad due to the lack of games.
Every day I check for news, anyway, I get depressed.
Random indie games and ports, yeah, it is saddening.
Even so, I haven't lost hope, they still have time to do something about it.
?

It looks unlikely but not impossible. The difference in launch aligned sales was 2 million in july according to vgchartz (not the best source, I know). But the Switch is expected to get a huge boost on holidays specially this year with Smash, and PS4 had two holidays in the frame considered, by the way. It's highly likely the Switch sells more than PS4 by their 2 year marks.
While I fully expect the Switch as others Nintendo consoles to decline faster in sales, it may not be the case specially considering future hardware revisions and price cuts. The DS itself sold very poorly until Lite came along and IMO the Switch has more potential to improvement than phat DS. Any time we may see a much slimmer Switch, a mini Switch without detachables and dock, a Switch TV, and all could retail for $150-200 very soon. And a Switch Pro too in the PS4 Pro spirit. I would expect many, many people to buy a $150 machine that could play BotW, Odyssey and thousands of games more.

I think they know it will be a long time until Metroid prime 4 is out.

The 3DS didnt feel worth it until around 2 years in. I expect the Switch to explode within the next year.

Why do Nintendo keep bragging about it's sales in Japan.

We all know how they tend to always dominate the Japan market.

So who give a crap, maybe focus on the rest of the world and start giving us new and good games, not the same old rinse repeat recycle shit you crap out on all your systems and old shit we played back when we had ps3/360

I also want is new fresh games that I see coming for PC, Xone and PS4 but portable no matter what downgrade they have to do, just the fact of playing some crazy high graphics good gameplay that just came out for PC and being able to play portable is pretty crazy...

I bought the Switch mostly 4 that to realize something like Wolfenstein II won't come out very soon and not much new at its level is even coming much, it's making me kinda forget about the console and just keep playing PC instead and forget about playing something outside home...

I just hope it's not like 3DS or I will be pissed, where it basically only got a nice Resident Evil revelations showing its potential and then nothing more, end, death it's again all about super Marios, Zelda's, Pokémon... Don't like any...

I don't think it will get there. Nintendo came out swinging with Zelda and Mario. Smash Bros will definitely sell a bunch of consoles. I don't see them keeping this up, though. They've been using Wii U ports to fill the gaps, but the Wii U only had a handful of decent titles and only a few are left.
