After 18 years, Sony has pulled the plug on support and repairs to the aging Playstation 2. Sony has said this is only down to no longer having the parts to continuing to service units, leaving PS2 owners now to try third parties or do it themselves.

The Playstation 2 was released in Japan on March 4th 2000, with the last consoles being to reach their repair centers no later than Friday, September 7th 2018.

The Sony Playstation 2, was the console that defined the generation of machines, beating out Sega, Microsoft and Nintendo by considerable margins.

I'm not surprised they serviced them this long, the console is still widely popular in JP despite being 2 generations behind and being discontinued in 2013. They probably had a huge stock of extra parts sitting around in a few warehouses, and a lot of repair requests coming in still so it makes sense they kept service up at least until they depleted their extra parts.
