l've gotten through 2 pairs of joycons just malfunctioning out of the blue themselves, the common symptom between both pairs, joystick ghosting, the joy-cons are probably the most unreliable controller nintendo has ever produced as a manufacturer, I've given up hope on getting another pair until the usual nintendo console "Redesign" with better joy-cons, or atleast a 80$ controller that doesn't break on itself, probably gonna get 8bitdo until that happens.

Define ghosting?
If you mean stuff like button presses/releases and stick movement not registering that's just the well known connectivity issue, can be fixed by opening the left JoyCon and putting a piece of conductive foam over where the antenna on the board is (that's Nintendo's official fix if you send it in to them), I did it to mine but do be careful as I managed to break my battery connector not knowing that it pulls straight up, it doesn't slide out like I expected. Had to scour eBay every day to find a cheap enough broken JoyCon to rip the board out of to fix mine. And finding a triwing screwdriver that's a perfect fit and won't strip the screws is also hard (hint, it's size Y00 and I've only been able to find it on iFixit)
Now you can finally buy just the board but it's as expensive as a brand new JoyCon.
But if you're willing to wait and you still have warranty, best just send in the JoyCons (and you can play with a Pro Controller in the meantime)

It's when sticks give off inputs when not actually being pressed. It causes you to walk or aim in places unintended thus making your gaming experience way more annoying than necessary. Well more so called drift I believe so may not actually be what hes explaining it is most likely the scenario you explained.

**EDIT** Later on in posts he says it's not connection so he must be experiencing drifting. Though I've experienced the connectivity issue you explained in your edit. The controller/console was saying it was synced though it wasn't sending any inputs I was issuing to it. Ended up Having to reset the console and the joycon, then resync it to get it functioning properly again.

I believe the technical aspect of the two terms = Ghosting Is when buttons/sticks inputs stick and send inputs when let go because of poor connection to the console and drifting is caused by a physical problem to the Hardwares analog stick causing it to not return to its correct positioning when being let go thus causing inputs to be sent. So ones cause is connection(Ghosting) and the other is hardware(Drifting) though both end up doing basically the same thing one can be fixed way easier than the other with a resync or recalibrate. Or simply moving closer to the console as some people have stated or you could go the extra mile and increase the antennae power so you have a stronger connection as you explained in your edit.

Yeah, my right Joycon has some minor drift, but it's not enough to really distract me, I suppose, since I don't play games where it really causes a bother, yet.

Not yet, beacuse it's fairly new. I'll probably have one or two. They feel like knock-offs, really. I concur with this part:

I only have that ghosting when the connection is poor. E.G. my dock is above the tv in a shelf, and when I put it deep inside the shelf and play from the couch I occasionally get input problems. That's a bluetooth issue. I moved the dock a bit further to the front of the shelf and everything is fine.

Can't find myself with this yet.
Though I DO know that the range between console and controller is rubbish, I wouldn't call them 'The most unreliable'.
I drift a lot in mario kart. here, I noticed that with a greater distance, the console sort of thinks I'm still pressing the shoulder button, while I'm not.

That being said, for the audience they're trying to reach, it IS quite the unreliable controller...

Its what the other guy said, the joystick moving on its own, its a pretty annoying thing, and for me its not been a connection issue because the ghosting or drifting occurs even when the console is in handheld mode while the joycons are attached to the console itself, pretty much the joystick is busted.

Thats new to me, I don't play a lot when its in docked mode, usually its handheld mode while at break from work.

That is pretty much a spot on description of my problem. My switch has actually been unplayable for the last few months cause of it with the exception of touchscreen games (voez, fallout shelter). I sadly don't have the money to replace them so Nintendo is going to have to wait on me buying a online subscription till I can finally play the device I've spent hundreds on

I've had a pair and a half go on me at this point.

In the first instance, my right joycon's analog stick would drift, and often fail to return to a zero point. I was able to consistently reproduce this issue, and posted the controller to Nintendo to investigate. No issue found according to them. I sent them video evidence of the issue occurring, and they gave me a refurbished replacement, apparently OK'd by QA. The first time I plugged it into my switch, the connection was loose, and rocked quite a bit. Due to this, the joycon wouldn't actually pair properly to the switch, so I ended up just buying a new pair out of frustration. I had tried to clean the analog sticks upon first encountering the issue, as advised by Nintendo and other people with the issue, but it didn't help me.

The second instance was for my little brother's switch. He had the drifting issue as well on the right joycon. So I bought a pair of joycons and kept the other half for myself. A week later his left joycon started the rocking and failing to pair issue I encountered with my replacement joycon.

Each of these things has happened about 9 months into owning the devices.

I had a joycon drift before. I would move the stick and it would stick for a few seconds.

I fixed it by re-calibrating multiple times. After doing that, it went away/was so small it had little to no effect.

Both of my sticks drift.
I fixed the left one but it was a pain to do. Now I have to do the right one too.

Moves on its own, as in you release the stick and it keeps moving for a sec? Or it moves even when you haven't been touching it?
Do the stick calibration in the settings and test the input at various distances, see if it stops doing it when you get close enough.

no issue with joycons. I have major problems with the dpad of the pro controller. I use the wrist straps with my joy cons which is a bit annoying. I started using them after I dropped the right joy con once. :-/

This is the story that I had with my joycons, 80$ for a controller that breaks itself is a rip off, nintendo really needs to change these controllers or update quality assurance, its pretty shitty on the consumers end when they pay 80$ for gimmicky controllers that don't even have a warranty.

The right stick seems to go down by itself for me (not physically ofc) so when i play xenoblade or zelda the camera points to the ground and i have to put it back until next time .. which happens a minute later
Or when i play mk8 it brakes itself .. which is just fcking annoying

It moves on its own without even touching the joystick, and its gradually gotten worse, to the point where the stick never comes back to the middle even when trying to hold it back in its natural position, I've tried all the fixes, re-calibrating, aswell as cleaning the inside part under the stick, only thing I haven't tried is replacing the joystick with a replacement from amazon, but at that point its as expensive as getting 2 8bitdo's, which would be better cause I am sure my 3 year old dualshock 4's won't break themselves.
