. . . that is his conclusion . . . not the reason . . . why plug and play?

Cause it's easy? For example, I am reading from reviews that the EZ-FLASH Redux is difficult to use and not noob friendly, so that flashcart wouldn't qualify as plug and play. The EverDrive-GBA X5 and the EverDrive-GB X5, those I would classify as plug and play, you put them in your console, you power on the console, choose the game you want to play and voila.

As for not wanting to hack, I am worried that something goes wrong like an unproper installation and it bricks my 3DS or that it may causes other unforseen issues, with flashcarts I don't have to worry about that.

3DS hacking these days are like 99% brick proof, the one that bricked their system don't follow direction given on the 3ds.hacks.guide and the guide is well written, regardless what flash cart you get you can't play most of the good games anyway since games have minimum firmware. NTRBoothax allows people to unbrick their console, unless the person has gotten an emmc brick, basically to the point where you can't flash anything to the system. Boot9Strap installation ain't scary if you compare to setting up Reinand and Arm9LoaderHax.

with ntrboot cfw installation you enter the system in such a way that you can use this method even in the event that your system is bricked before you begin (it runs before the system os kicks in allowing you to rewrite the consoles nand in case of a brick . . . if needed)

I am reading from reviwers that the EZ-FLASH Redux is difficult to use and not noob friendly, so that wouldn't be plug and play.
technically no flashcard is as you need a pc to obtain roms but i digress

With flashcarts I don't have to worry about that.
but there are worries still if you use a rom without a private header or game compatibility with the 3ds fw also rom savetype with the flashcard not to mention the lack of an interface requiring you to cycle through games to find the one you want

it's easy
if this is truly your goal then to answer your concern the sky3ds+ is your best flashcard based answer . . . but as i have stated (in so many words) your fears are null as ntrboot allows you to fix your concern if it ever occurs so my suggestion would be to by a ntrboot compatible flashcard the steps in 3ds.hacks.guide are so well written i have seen 8 yr old kids complete it (no exaggeration) and if you do need help you can come back here and i will assist you

So even if I update firmware with a cart to say ver 4.5.0, I still wouldn't be able to play 3DS games released in 2018, correct? I know that you I tried to play Dragon Quest VII on an original cart, the game prompted me to update to ver 10.3.0-28 whenever I tried to play the game.

correct individual games require different fw generally the fw that was "new" as the game was either developed or released

1. You should really hack your 3DS before you update. You can do it for free on 3.0.0 but you may not be able to do so on a more current 3DS version after you updated it.
2. 3DS gamecarts come with the system updates they require. I think that you should be able to update with just the flashcart and the ROM.

What would I get though? I mean aside from the obvious ability to run games ROM on an SD Card?

From what I understand that won't update the Home Menu though, only the firmware?

What do you want? :D
-You can play games from other regions
-Take screenshots
-Run homebrew
-Backup saves of every game whether it's bought or not
-Dump games (and the IDs required to play .3DS ROMs online)
-Record the screen via wifi
-Cheats
etc

The home menu is part of the firmware

I suggest you just use this since you are on 3.0.0: https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(soundhax)
Completely free, and you will have an updated and hacked console and it's EXTREMELY idiot proof, the apps automatically back up every single thing so if something goes wrong they automatically restore it before leaving so you just need to try again, IF something goes wrong. It's an extremely fast guide to follow, it's easy, and once done you just find your games in .cia format on the internet (from That ISO site most likely) and then you just stick them in your 3ds and install them. All you need is a decent sized SD, but you need that with a flashcart anyway.

So no matter what I do I'll have to update the firmware if I want to be able to play all 3DS games that were released in 2012-2018? Is there absolutely NO way to get around this? If so what would be the best, to update from online or to update from a an official cartridge?
There is a way: hack your 3DS, which is absolutely FREE on 3.0, then update to 11.8, and enjoy all the advantages of CFW

Wait, what? Won't playing 3DS ROMS on a flashcart allow me to bypass this?
No, flashcarts just emulate a real cart with all of the limitations that come with that.
Hacking your system allows you to update and get all of the games with most recent support on the most recent OFW. You are basically limiting yourself for really no good reason.

Practically impossible. Unless you have some rip off sd card.
EVEN THEN. Ntrboothax pretty much makes that impossible to screw up. Since it works right at bootrom. And even then, because it works at works at bootrom, it's able to fix any brick.
Personally. best hack route.
buy
r4igold rts plus (or the r4 that comes with a ntrboothax switch)
Flash it or use ntrboothax switch.
Setup sd card
get a magnet and watch the magic.
Depending on the method you go for hacking your system. It can be harder, or easier. (Ntrboothax is pretty much the easiest. Plus you get the ability to get out of a brick, and I mean any brick. Not sure about mcu brick, but it's pretty much impossible to come across.)

There's a new, free CFW method for 11.8
