I'm new to Switch hacking, though I've hacked plenty of other consoles.
Anyway, I got my Switch pretty recently. I ran Hekate ctcaer 4.0 and installed devmenu (using tinfoil). Then I installed 1-2-Switch, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 DX and Zelda BOTW using devmenu. When I'm running Hekate, I can play them just fine, but when I boot into OFW, I can't launch the games. Any help? Should I have used tinfoil instead of devmenu?

Because you didn't buy them on Nintendo eShop. They're installed with a fake ticket. If the console detects that the game ticket is invalid, it will refuse to launch the game. CFW patches this. You must be on CFW to launch NSP games.

PS: You cannot make legit tickets. It is impossible.

It’s just strange coz I was able to install backups on 3ds and Wii U, and run them on OFW. I know that Nintendo themselves would be able to recognise a fake ticket, but the console start the game with it anyway.
(Also, I’m offline with my Switch, and I don’t have an NNID linked to it, so I have zero risk of being banned unless it connects to the internet).

Those are not OFW, you are running on sysnand using luma3ds or whatever it called on the WiiU, the patch to enable anything on sysnand is installed.

Actually, on the 3ds I have tried booting without luma3ds (I had to temporarily uninstall boot9strap while I searched for a solution to my problem). And on Wii U, I don’t have a permanent CFW - I need to launch browserhax, then the HBL, then Mocha CFW. It’s too inconvenient unless I need to run homebrew with kernel access, so I usually play games (installed using the Brazillian method) without launching an exploit or running sigpatches. And hey presto, they all work just fine!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Have you ever worked with mod chips on older systems its the same thing as CFW. You need to bypass the protection.
Never bothered with modchips, I always used a softmod (or flashcart in the case of the DS).
Backup games on the Wii U have legit tickets (from game discs)
I used NUSD to get my Wii U games.

...

Wait, does that mean that cartridge dumps converted to .nsp might work without sigpatches?

On the 3DS, you cannot run pirated games on OFW unless they were installed using "legit" CIA files, which is uncommon and limited to a small list of games. On the Wii U, if you used the Brazilian method, you used legitimate disc tickets. If it wasn't an eShop-only release, VC, DLC, etc., then it probably ran just fine on OFW on the Wii U.

On the Switch, you must use CFW for pirated games, just like on the 3DS (99% of the time) and on the Wii U (about half of the time).

Also on the 3ds, if you used sky3ds you can run pirated 3DS games. Only .3DS files.

Well thanks for the information... I mean it wouldn’t be an issue if the Switch had permanent CFW instead of me having to RCM it every time (or keeping it in sleep mode - what if it crashes or the battery runs out?)

Then you have to re-jig and resend the payload. Look into a dedicated payload sender such as TX's SX Pro or a similar device. (There are many now, most cheaper than SX Pro.)

That's why the TXSX Pro with autorcm is the best. I always keep my Switch in sleep mode when I'm not using it but every once in a while when I have a random crash all I have to do is hold power for 12 seconds to power off the Switch and tap power to turn it back on and plug in the sx pro until I see the switch logo and I'm right back in cfw.

Did you know that by installing autorcm you are literally bricking your Switch? Also, I believe it causes battery drain/charging issues. I’d much rather use a jig or modded joycon, but I’m 100% broke after buying my Switch and spending the rest of my money on a USB-C cable and a pack of cigarettes. I can’t even afford a $1 piece of plastic, let alone a dongle.

This is why you buy tx sx pro

You get a CFW that is either #1 or at least competing for #1 depending on who you talk to, you get a super tiny dongle that will boot your cfw no matter where are you. No need to worry about it crashing or needing RCM, you have their dongle.

or buy an R4S dongle for half the price. it all depends on whether you want XCI compatibility

The best option (until coldboot is released) will always be internal modchip :P
