Hi all, I have come across conflicting information about whether or not it is recommended to upgrade to SM 4.3 from 4.1/4.2 prior to softmodding. Some tutorials say upgrading to 4.3 is recommended while others say not to. ModMii seems to recommends 4.1. What is the current recommendation on this topic and pros/cons of both options? I am going to buy a used Wii so if one version is better than the other I can try to find a Wii with the best version of the SM. Thanks!

It's safe. Go ahead and update your Wii to 4.3. Once updated, you can use ModMii to proceed softmodding your Wii. Make sure your Wii is connected to internet during the ModMii procedure as it downloads necessary required files. I was able to softmod my Wii (4.3U) without any issues. Plus, I read that 4.3 does come with IOS58 base and does not require you to run separate WAD installation.

modmii will install all the extra stuff that was in 4.3 but you'll still be on 4.1. 4.1 is reccomened because bannerbomb is a much easier exploit.

Did you update to 4.3 through ModMii or through the Wii itself? Are you able to boot straight into the homebrew channel? I read something about “boot2” and how 4.3 gets rid of it and this has something to do with not being able to boot straight into the homebrew channel but I am not quite sure I understand the whole thing.

The official 4.2 update*, and any following one*, include an update to boot2 v4
All that means is that if you did not already have boot2v4, then installed BootMii in boot2, and later run an official update to 4.2+, it will be removed (just that time for the life of the console)

* The version number only applies to the Wii Menu as you probably know, there have been at least three IOS-related updates released all with 4.3, so version number is not that indicative, etc

4.1 has a couple of Priiloader patches more (nothing terribly useful) and different game-less exploits (and of course different theme files, if that's your thing); 4.2 and 4.3 are just Bannerbomb fixes, and there are no other differences in day to day use
