Hey there,

I bought a used Switch and after recently reading about banishment, I decided to know if the previous owner was messing with the console and I was left with a beautiful offline device.

Here are the latter emails between me and Dan, the Nintendo support operator that seems quite a nice guy. I even asked a couple more questions:
Hello You Sexy Bastard,

Thank you for the details.

I confirm you that the console with serial number XAJ70034XXXXXX is not banned.

I inform you you cannot download a game while the console is turned off, as the internet connection is needed, however, if it is turned on and in the dock station, the download works fine.

Well, I don't really have a favourite game, but I enjoy playing Splatoon 2 more than the other games.

Should you have any other question, feel free to ask.

Kind regards,

Dan

Hello, Dan.

Here is the data you requested:

Nickname: TheNickName
Dob: I'm old
Serial number: TheSerialNumber

Also, does the console download games while in the docking station or with the screen turned off?

And what is your favorite game on the Switch?

Thank you for your help.

So, if in doubt, just ask Nintendo!
They require your email, nickname, date of bith (for some weird reason), and console serial number. I'm relieved by this, I'll just enjoy some legit games, demos and play some cheap indies, because Switch games are quite expensive, specially first party.

I know everyone knows this. Just wanted to post it here so everyone knows it's possible to know beforehand what you are getting.

You put the bee in Nintendo's bonnet and say "can you ban my console please?".
How so, my friend?
If you want to buy a Switch, knowing beforehand if your system is hacked is better than learning the hard way. I am almost sure a hacked Switch should be cheaper than a clean one.

But hey, I don't intend to preach anything. I just thought I'd share this one here, because there's people out there that can be in my situation and it's always nice to know Nintendo is informative. Praise to Dan.

Not really. You only pay once and then you get all games for free. Playing online with a console is stupid anyway. Playing online is for PCs.
If only Splatoon2 was playable on PC. When I am in top form MK8 is pretty fun online as well.

What about flagged consoles?
Do they tell you whether your console is going to get banned? Or we have to assume there are no such things as flagging and ban waves for the Switch?

Bingo. This right here is the big problem. If bans were instant then fine, but they can come an unknown number of weeks after an offense. I suppose flagging an account and banning later is fine but any banning of the console should be instant and there should be a procedure for the new buyer to make a (suspected) previously hacked console that has not been banned officially legit again.
