I've been browsing some of Nintendo Switch games and got excited to see some titles thinking they are new games but then I realize that they are games I have completed on Wii U or other platforms. I rarely replay those games because I completed them before and having them in a new console isn't something exciting for me as it's about repeating a game I played before and knowing what will happen next (exception is very good games and remake of some older games). So I am wondering what other gamers think of this, would you buy a again a game that you have played before just because it's available on the newer console? Isn't it a rip off as you have bought that game before and you have to pay for it again, also this will make game developers lazy as instead of being creative and make new games, they are busy converting games to a newer platform which will indeed bring them more money but will make the gamers experience less interesting.

i think it all comes down to that people who have exausted a game before don't like ports and people who haven't do. i just feel sorry for the programmers who have to port because porting an existing game must be very boring and uninspiring. big companies probably contract out the porting so it doens't affect them making new games.

I think a lot of companies including Nintendo just got caught with their pants down when the Switch took off. Ports are what they can shove out the door quick to fill the void. We will see newer titles down the road, at least from Japanese devs.

Nintendo's just about exhausted their Wii U library at this point. After NSMBU there isn't much left.

a lot of people never owned a wii u, so it's understandable why they'd port games over. I mean it's less work than making a new game. I've actually bought every one of these ports despite already owning them on the wii u. they're great games...but maybe not enough to rebuy them. they were for me though. :)

Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Super Mario 3D land, Xenoblade Chronicles X and the HD Zelda remakes are still there.

If I already played the game on another platform, then I won't buy it as a general rule. (* exceptions apply)
The game is not meant for me, but for people that didn't play it.

Considering the game was originally released on Wii U, a platform that sold very poorly, it's understandable they made ports of its games, not to sell them again to people that already bought them, but for the many more people that never had a Wii U to begin with.

I had a Wii U, I had those games, I have no reason to buy them. But I am Ok with the ports being released. The world doesn't revolve around me.

(*exception that apply) If I really liked the game, it has new content and I would like to play it on the go I might buy it, but TBH my previous experience with this has been disappointing. I mean, e.g., I got MK8DX thinking I would play it a lot on the go, etc. but to this day I still have around 3 or 4 times more playtime on my Wii U MK8 copy.

Regarding game developers/designers going lazy? Not a chance, I don't think many game developers are involved in ports, it's more of a programmers/testers job, I mean the job of the muscle not the creative head. I don't think they are redirecting too much resources from new game development, the only thing that would happen if they didn't do this is more programmers being idle and less titles being released.

The fact that devs make cash on ports is also an opportunity for players to discover good titles.
FFX HD and MGS3 HD, even Persona 4 Golden, were really interesting in that regard.

What's unbearable, is that there is no backward compatibility for "minor" games on Switch.
While the VITA had a huge part of PSP digital library accessible on launch (even if I had to use adrenaline to play my good old PSX red alert, license reasons), which was stuff you already paid for, NS had freaking NOTHING...A big middle finger to players if you ask me.

Also, 60€ for skyrim decided me to, well, find another path.

Devs like Panic Button don't mind porting, at least to Switch. In fact, some do it for the challenge of whether it's even possible.

Ports are nice when they're just an addition to a main library of new AAA/AA titles & price is lowered, otherwise that's just a milking. Also it's a poor justification 'many users didn't have %devicename%', you know, a Virtual Boy's userbase was so tiny.
Your comparison is useless. The Virtualboy had very specialized low budget games attached to a very specific hardware not up to to what you would expect in following consoles, its very small library wouldn't have done well on any other console. In the other hand the Switch runs mostly the same kind of games as the Wii U.
You are not the target, simple as that, don't buy the games, and if you want to get some basic understanding of why those games are ported and sell try to step up and make comparisons that are not so flawed... but being oblivious about it won't make any bad anyway.

I don't mind them so long as it's in addition to new (either original or recent) games.

There are some potential advantages to them, for example, if you didn't previously own them and/or you wanted a more 'portable' version,.

So far I own or plan to have a few ports for these reasons, three of which I previously owned but I wanted something more portable since my laptop is not good for gaming and streaming isn't an option.

The prices can take the p*** though but I usually keep an eye out for offers.

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
before that there was one to generate a fully modeled scene from a 2D image
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but most recently, there was one that actually generates a working unity scene with terrain and textures already set up that you can import right into unity, that's a huge time saver right there

and using LLMs to generate NPC dialogue and even dynamically generated quests is something i'm sure is already happening

will just take some time for games made using those things to be completed and released
