if I remove my microsd to install something custom firmware related and put it back in, something strange happens. I press the power button and the blue light comes on for about half a second and goes off no matter how many times I press it. The only way round it seems to be: remove sd, turn on 3ds, while 3ds is on re insert sd, turn off, turn on, turn off again then the next power on will be successful. Is there a more practical way around this?

  1. Copy all your files off your SD card to a computer.
  2. Reformat the card in FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size. You'll need guiformat if your card is bigger than 32 GB.
  3. Check that card for hardware defects. Use H2testw in a Full Write + Verify test.
  4. If the card passes inspect, put all your files back on it.
  5. Replace your boot.firm with a new copy of Luma3DS v9.1.
  6. In the luma/payloads folder, update with GodMode9 v1.7.1. Also update your gm9 folder.
  7. In the root of your card, make a boot9strap folder and add the two files of boot9strap v1.3 (use the boot9strap-1.3.zip).
  8. Follow instructions in updating boot9strap.
  9. Follow instructions in updating the custom firmware on your CTRNAND.
  10. After observing the behavior of your 3DS, you may to do additional troubleshooting steps:
    Black screen on SysNAND boot
    Clear Home Menu extdata
Black screen on SysNAND boot after Installing boot9strap

  11. If the n3DSXL still has boot issues with your micro SD card in place, consider replacing your SD card reader module.

Thanks, I will try this now. Just to let you know incase it helps, this happens if I turn on my 3DS without the microSD inserted

EDIT: after looking at my home menu, my custom theme was gone and a lot of my badges including the badge arcade app itself :( is there anything I can do?

Now all my save data is gone too. However, I noticed the Nintendo 3DS folder is intact. Has the new boot.firm done something? even after putting the old one back in nothing happens.

Luma3DS (boot.firm) wouldn't corrupt your files. No one can know for sure what did at this point.

***

Restore your save data with Checkpoint and/or JKSM if you ever made backups of your saves.

***

If you never made those save backups. Read this thread as a case study in restoring your saves by using Duplicate Cleaner Pro (find this paid program yourself).
