Hey all,

I've recently finished Donkey Kong Country Returns on the wii, and discovered that the 3DS has additional exclusive levels!
But to get to them, you first have to finish the whole game + collect all KONG letters....

There is a save on 3ds-savegames which is exactly what I want (world 9 unlocked & not played):
https[colon]//3ds-savegames[dot]com/save/donkey-kong-country-returns-3d/game-cleared-extra-world-9-classic-mode (https is needed, can't post links yet!)

But it seems there's still no way to convert the encrypted gateway saves to the JKSM/Checkpoint format (slot0.dat) without a gateway :(

Is anyone with a gateway and experience converting able to help? Many thanks in advance!!

Then code the address with [dot] for all "."
Here it is: https[colon]//3ds-savegames[dot]com/save/donkey-kong-country-returns-3d/game-cleared-extra-world-9-classic-mode
It redirects to the frontpage without https. I've also edited the original post

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Savegame
Game cleared, Extra World 9 [Classic Mode]

This is a JKSV Exported Save, extract 'DK_Country_Returns_3D' folder to 'SD:\JKSV\Saves' and import the 'dk3d' save with JKSV.

The Original Gateway Save was uploaded by: MattKimura, I just exported it using JKSV using my Red Gateway Card.

Title ID: 00040000000CCE00 / Region: USA (save may also work on EUR version but I have not tested it)

Save Description:
File 1: Occupied
File 2: Empty
File 3: Empty

In-game progress: Beat the game, cleared all temple stages and unlocked the extra world 9
- Collected Kong on all stages
- Beat the main game
- Beat all temple stages
- Unlocked world 9, exclusive to the 3DS version

WHOA! Tested it right away, imported it successfully with JKSM!

World 9 is unlocked with no levels played, as described.

Many, many thanks!!

Don't think so, the save I have has the first file labeled as 100% complete, so going by that I'm guessing that absolutely EVERYTHING is completed on my save, however I'll look into it. Thanks for pointing this out.
The save that @c4388354 converted above had 88% when I first loaded it, so I guess the last world accounts for 12%.

Puzzle pieces and speedruns don't increase the percentage count according to a gamefaqs thread, just beating levels.
Beating levels in hard mode then goes from 100% to 200%.

you're correct. percentage is based on how many stages have been beaten with kong letters obviously unlocking the k stages in each world. puzzle pieces and time trials don't account for this. with that being said, I've never bothered with the time trials, too hard! puzzle pieces on the other hand... you can find them with the help of squawks. tropical freeze works in the same way. both fantastic games. :)

Time trials were kind of annoying on the wii: every time you died, you had to wait the death animation to finish, hit start, select restart to reset the timer, wait for the loading screen (wasn't the level already loaded??), wait for the 3-2-1 countdown...
Combine that with unfair deaths from bad wiimote shaking detection.

Tropical Freeze's time trials on the other hand were a blast to play!

don't you get like a bronze, silver, or gold medal based on how well you did? I seem to recall that. I got bronze on the first stage in one of the two games. that's when I thought, "this is too hard." I've been through the games countless times. I actually bought tropical freeze on the switch despite owning it on the wii u. I got 200% again. :P

btw, did you hear that tropical freeze on the switch has sold around 1.5 million copies? hopefully that means another game in the series. :)

Yeah, there's also SHINY gold for added absurdity. I think it's the devs own time records. The shiny gold times are not displayed anywhere, you only get the medal.

But gold is doable, I've managed to get it on all regular TF levels (not bosses), there are only a few that are TRULY challenging (Sea Stack Attack comes to mind).

are there leaderboards with tropical freeze on the switch? I may give it another go. I suspect you have to keep rolling to make any sort of time, yes?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
