Tanglewood launches today for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive

No, you didn't accidentally use a time machine to travel back to 1993, but there is indeed an original SEGA Genesis game releasing today. Titled Tanglewood, it's a puzzle platforming game inspired by the likes of classic games like Aladdin and Sonic. The developer, a British studio called Big Evil Corporation, didn't just model this game like a "retro-styled" indie, but actually went through the effort of using development technology that was only around during the era of the Genesis/Mega Drive. You can purchase a cartridge for original hardware for around £54, or you can pick it up on Steam for £13.95. If you get the game on PC, you'll be provided with not only a Steam copy, but a ROM file of the game, if you'd like to play it on an emulator or flashcart, as well.

I like the look of this, I have to admit. And I’m seriously tempted to buy the cartridge for my Mega Drive. I could just buy it on Steam and get the ROM, but because they’ve gone to the trouble and put the work in to make an actual cart, I think they should be rewarded. No stealing this one people.

Uh, what? What's the deal with so many games having such ridiculously high minimum requirements? Pure laziness? An inability in Steam to list lower requirements? Horrible inefficient games?

Stuff like this always sort of blows my mind.

PS - Seriously, a 1.8GHz x86 CPUs (which have higher IPC) is ~236.8x faster than the Sega Genesis' CPU and ~502.8x faster than its sound CPU. And about 7,700x as much RAM.

You can definitely list lower requirements, just look at Oblivion's page on Steam.

That's not really much lower. In fact, if you look at some other older games you get stuff like:

Ultimate Doom/Wolfenstein 3D:

"
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM: A 100% Windows XP/Vista-compatible computer system
"

Descent:

"
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 or better
DirectX: Version 7.0

Storage: 32 MB available space
Sound Card: Sound Blaster compatible
Additional Notes: Please visit Interplay's support site for the optimal settings for Descent 3's setup.
"

Rise of the Triad: Dark War

"
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM:
OS: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
Processor: Intel Core Duo 2

"

If you can find some listing with substantially lower requirements, I'd love to see them. :/

What the potato. It looks better than shovel knight, which requires high graphics consoles like PS4, shovel knight should have been made for SNES or sega genesis too

Is making videogames for defunct consoles legal? Can I make a PS1 videogame and sell it?

Either the Steam version has a custom emulator that's not very well-optimized or they can't go any lower than that with minimum requirements in the website.
