They will probably release a kernel update sooner or later. That's what they did the past few times.

I'm hoping so, but that's the fundamental problem with such time bombs. Unless they at some time defuse the time bomb, we're invariable left with just hoping that they'll again extend the timer. But odds favor they'll eventually permanently disappear (or have their new hardware use different hardware and a different kernel so the old one doesn't get an update) and we're left with a permanent soft brick.

That's what I meant by "defuse the time bomb". The paradox is they want to keep releasing new versions so long as they keep selling new flash cards and they'll lose all interest to do updates once they stop. Basically, I don't have a lot of faith that those who intentionally cripple things are going to come to their senses and realize it'd be easier to not have to keep pushing updates just to extend the time bomb.

I think that they did release a "last update that removed the timebomb" for earlier cards.

If you have evidence of this, I'd love to see it. A quick check of their site and most things pre-2014 aren't even listed with links. There's stuff for the "2013 R4I-GOLD 3DS" but I'm not sure that was ever time bombed as IIRC the split between r4isdhc.com and r4isdhc.cn (or was it r4i-sdhc.com?) happened in 2013. The rest of the cards all link to the same page for the 2014 model and have the aforementioned time bomb. The real annoyance for me is that for reasons unknown to me ysmenu doesn't work properly with my 2015 card. *shrug* Thankfully nds-bootstrap has become so great that it's mostly a moot point. I can just put the cards I do have in my DSs and set back the date if needed.

I forget the details, except that one flashcard maker made clear that one of the other ones stole their designs and setup a whole new website, so it was telling people to not buy from them. IIRC that was r4isdhc but it could have been r4i-sdhc and then the other copied from them. In any case, trying to use a patched r4i-sdhc on the r4isdhc (to work around their own hardware check and time bomb) and I believe the r4i-sdhc (1.84b, latest version) has a time bomb in 2019/2020.

Point is it's all pretty messy, which is why "improved time bomb" is a pretty killer joke.

I wonder what "improved" means in this case. Maybe made to use internet time combined with an integrated RTC so that you can't bypass it by changing the date?
