I need a solution that lets me backup my photos. I take a lot of them, so 5TB should be enough to feel comfortable with. OneDrive offers 5TB plans, but divided among 5 accounts, and I don't like that. I want 5TB for one account. Is there any good cloud solution that allows that?

Please no:

- startups
- companies with dubious security

If you need 5 TERA Bytes just for pictures, you are doing something wrong really... Even 50000 15MB POSTER images (which are like VERY high DPI 11000x11000 pixel images) don't take that much, so you definitely have too many, just delete some and use GDrive for the free 15GBs and MEGA (by far most reliable cloud at this point in time) to host the rest (offers 50GBs free). But why resort to cloud? Just get a small external HDD and you are good to go, MUCH cheaper than stupid paid hosts that need renewing of plan plus easy to carry around. If you feel like splurging a bit, just build your own server instead for basically as much storage as your HDDs can hold still cheaper than a 5TB data plan over years:P

I would suggest you buy a mechanical hard drive, it's a lot cheaper in the long run.
I don't want to run the risk of it breaking.

I currenly have ~2TB between photos, photo editing and scans taken in 15 years. I don't want to delete anything, or I wouldn't have been looking for a large data plan. I don't care if I have to spend money for a yearly plan, I consider it an insurance.

I don't want to make my own NAS because I don't want the responsibility of accidentally losing so much data from my life.

Having your own server means less costs, only needing the upkeep and in case something happens, it's possible to recover files with certain programs and methods even if your HDDs get completely fried compared to a guaranteed loss if anything happens server-side on the cloud hosts. Also, just having a 2.5" external HDD is MUCH simpler, allows file recovery and you can carry it around, all with paying ONCE for many years of functionality, plus is cheaper, so you can even get two identical ones and backup everything twice just to have it all safe even if one of the drives were to fail for whatever reason and it's still cheaper than a 5TB cloud plan:P

Yes, but I don't care. As I wrote earlier, I don't want to take the risk of hardware malfunctions just because I wanted to save something. This stuff is priceless for me.

Reason I said the 2 HDDs with the same files (if one fails, the other one is intact with the exact same files so you lost nothing). However, again, best cloud host in my opinion is MEGA by far, most reliable servers, literally never down and very reasonably priced.

Isn't the website from the same guy who got raided in NZ by the FBI for hosting Megaupload?

That was AGES back and FBI took that awesome site down more than 10 years ago, now it's all completely legal and reliable under new ownership. MEGA doesn't allow illegal files on there and even does tons of DMCA take downs and whatnot to keep itself clean. Trust me, I never had any issues with it and just 300€ a year for 8TBs storage is pretty darn good, especially since it has some crazy high bandwiths, higher ones than literally every other host really! Been using it for 5 years now, definitely best cloud host since the glory days of MediaFire!

Google Gsuite currently offers "1TB" for 9.99 a month, though they currently do not enforce any cap, and you can have up to an exabyte without issue. I have 4TB stored currently, and am only charged the regular price per month. Google could probably enforce it any time they wanted, but for now, and for years, they have not.

I think Flickr and Amazon Prime both offer unlimited photo storage specifically, but you have to downscale to like 1080p iirc.

I think that I will go with both Mega and Amazon, just to be safe. Thank y'all

re: MEGA

why do so many pirates use it then? it's clearly a safe haven especially as you don't need that level of encryption (or directly downloading into RAM).

i find it more an annoyance than anything because when I need something legit and it's there, I have to mirror it on my server using megatools (thank god that's in debian 9 package manager), because my phone is blarg and I don't have a pc -.-

cheapest option would be probably a dedicated server... lol

Once MEGA gets a takedown request over copyrights for a file, it automatically deletes any file with the same HASH instantly from it's servers, even from private storage, meaning that while pirates use it and everything, if something goes down, it's down for good. Megaupload didn't do that, reason the site itself was seized.

OR you can buy some magnetic tape, which is dirt cheap, and back it up multiple times. I do warn you, the transfer times are slow.
OR you could've gotten the hint from my previous messages that I don't want any offline solution in fear of losing my files over accidents.

Didn't Megaupload also offer prizes when people would see/download your files? I recall it being $10.000 every million.

One option may be to use a backup service like Backblaze or Crashplan which offer unlimited storage plans.

These are only backup services though so you need to copy copies of the files on your desktop, which really you should anyway as I wouldn't trust my only copies on the cloud.

I previous used Crashplan home which no longer exists, although I use crashplan for business on my server now and Backblaze on my desktop, but it saved me when a HDD crashed last year.

The downside is that upload speeds can be relatively slow, I have a 15mbps upload speed but each only typically uses 1-5mbps.

Both of these do allow you to set your own encryption key, which you would need to keep a copy of somewhere.

Look, wherever you store your files, there's always a chance that they will be lost. The only way to be absolutely sure that your files will never be lost due to some unforeseen event is if your printed those 15,000 images and stored them in a box.
