Final Fantasy XV gets update on PC, adds online features.

A new, 1.8 GB update just hit the PC version of Final Fantasy XV which, in addition to providing various bugfixes, also brings a list of new online-centric features to the game. Among the most notable features is the ability to change Noctis's appearance by speaking to a crow named "Avatara" behind Takka's Pit Stop in-game. This allows players to use a female version of the protagonist, if they so choose, with Noctis's appearance being easily reset at any time through the main menu.

Additionally, there are now two types of floating crystals that will appear, blue and in orange, which represent "Official Treasures" and "User Treasures" respectively. Official Treasures are limited time event items which give a lottery ticket of sorts when found. Once the event is finished, winning numbers will be announced, and players with matching number sequences on their tickets will win prizes, with even losing participants receiving a small reward. These can be picked up once every day for which the event is active, but the location will change each time it's collected. In contrast, User Treasures are dropped by players in-game for others to find. If found, both the finder and the one who dropped it will be rewarded with an identical item, the value of which will be determined by how much time has passed between setting and finding and a rewards table. Only one User Treasure may be placed by a single player in one day.

Finally, the game adds the ability to share photos tied to the location at which they were shot. These shared photos can be rated by other users, with the original photographer receiving a reward based on how their pictures were rated. Rewards for this include unlocking clothing options for the new appearance change feature mentioned above. The game allows 10 photos to be shared at once, and sharing more simply erases the oldest to make room.

...why?

I can understand the need for a female protagonist in a game like Harvest Moon or Fallout, where the character is an avatar that represents you...but Final Fantasy is always about a story. You don't represent a single person. You are not the character, despite being able to name them in some JRPGs. You are the team that is saving the world or some such.

I'm not complaining, but of all the things to add to Final Fantasy 15 a female protagonist would be the last on my list.

Is this update only for PC? I don't own it regardless but I'd probably consider buying it on console if it's alright.

Female Noctis? Wonder if they also recorded new dialogue to match? Still, gets me interested. I started a NG+ run of this game a while back and I'm not too far in, so next I return to this game, I'll try some of this new stuff out. There's also more DLC on its way.

Instead of updating this shitty game, why don't they just do something about FFVII Remake?
and please no Tabata this time, don't even let him interfere.

Its far from being a shitty game, and other team is doing thr FFVII remake, so continuing to update FFXV does not affect at all the progress of the remake

Tabata is a solid director who managed to rally together a team in utter disarray and salvage a severely stalled project into something not quite a disaster, and for some, something pretty good. There's nothing wrong with him. Without him, there would be no Final Fantasy XV to speak of. While perhaps not quite the creative that Tetsuya Nomura is, Tabata is by all means much better at managing his teams, whipping them into shape, and getting things out in a timely fashion. Lord knows Square could use people like him, as it's clear much of the leadership is grossly incompetent as evidenced by company decisions in the past decade. They've had multiple very high profile projects languish in development hell thanks to horrible, misinformed decisions regarding their engine tech and resource allocation, which nearly caused them to go bankrupt. Whoever told you that Tabata was a bad director is very wrong. He has directing skills the company could badly use. If you're still skeptical, then perhaps wait until his next title to pass judgement, considering he now helms Square's Luminous Productions studio and now has a game project and team that's entirely his to build from scratch. I think he'll come into his own quite soon and I'm very much looking forward to his next work.

All that said, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is being worked on by a different team and under Tetsuya Nomura, and that's not about to change. FFXV's new content updates won't affect that game's development schedule. Considering Nomura is also directing Kingdom Hearts 3, don't expect anything much from the FF7 Remake until KH3 is released and all focus can go to the FF7 Remake.

They keep updating the game for more than 2 years now to make it look good.
You clearly never played any of Final Fantasy games, where it used to have a strong characters, great Soundtracks, tactical battle system, big cities and great stories.
FFXV: 2 or 3 good soundtracks, boring battle system, 2 cities and the rest are just gas stations filled with Texas people ( no offence for Texas but come on its a fantasy game), incomplete story and they just keep updating it for 2 years with season pass to make it complete ( still silly story tho ), characters are so lame is like a group of school guys went for a trip to Las Vegas.
And I still won't forgive them for ruining Cid, he become a paw paw now.:whip:

Or just start from scratch. A new game, hire a decent, proper writter. If they want to talk of war, someone who actually understands motivations and implications of war. If they want to talk about human relationships, someone who has the tact to actually portray believable relationships other than angst teenagers. Etc. For they kind of investment these guys make on graphics and stuff, they could easily have a dream team of writters instead of just cutting corners.

Same goes for gameplay, please user-test your prototypes in a user blind environment. This is 2018 not 1995.

I would argue it's even worse than that. I haven't played the game, but that doesn't matter too much for this issue. As you have stated, Final Fantasy is telling a story; it is not the user generating one. You are literally meant to be roleplaying as the main character, having your decisions being made the ones he actually made. The story is you, as the player, living through a slice of the main character's life. This is very distinct from a game like Skyrim where you are utterly detached from the world in a fashion that allows you to do literally anything, act out any character you choose, and play out the consequences.

In such a world, provided it is designed coherently enough, gender politics are not so easy to change by just flipping a lever and changing the gender. I haven't played the game, but I think I remember the general premise: you were on a bachelor party with your guy friends, about to be married to the princess of a different kingdom. This premise alone has multiple factors that would be destroyed by just changing the gender: Noctis would not be out having a party with her male friends before a wedding to a princess. The entire world would need to be adjusted around this change in premise and morals, and that has a massive cascading effect on the world around it. Suddenly you would have to take into account that homosexuality would be far more common, about how loose relationships are allowed to be, and basically the entire demographic makeup of the world.

I realize that these are probably not things that developers and writers don't take into account, but they should be. Just imagine if either of the main characters in God of War, Kratos or his son, changed genders. The game would have far less impact or meaningfulness than it currently does. The game was designed around who the main character is, and gender is an extremely important factor in that.
