I wonder if there are any visual/performance differences between trimmed and non-trimmed XCI

I've been researching this quite a lot on the forum but found no answers, so if this has been responded please feel free to delete the thread. :)

There is no difference, trimmed just removes the empty space from the file.

Carts come in different sizes, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, etc, but it's unlikely games will use all of the space. The releases you find are direct image dumps of the carts as XCI files, meaning they exactly match the contents of the cart storage, including unused space. When you trim, you just remove that unused space from the file to make it smaller. None of the game files themselves are being sacrificed in any way.

Can you trim an XCI and still keep the cert intact?
Yes! Trimming is just removing the 0'd out portion of the card dump Its just a bunch of FFFFFFFFFFFF's at the end so it doesnt matter. I have moved to all NSP installs though since the load times are a lot better and noticeable.

I will be too, once more NSP dumps appear (Or XCI dumps can be easily converted) and an easier NSP installer that isn't DevMenu is made.

Wow I didn't know that about the trimming process, I was considering using NSP to install DLC's on my XCI but I was a little afraid to get a ban since I'm online with some card 1 XCI's with my Zelda cert just like @Reecey. Will my saves work right off the bat if I move my XCI's to NSP?

Saves are internal so as long as the nsp has the same I'd as the xci they will carry over. The nsp install will overtake the spot if the xci copy on the homemenu

This is exactly what I'm testing right now. Had Zelda BotW game cart along with legit purchased DLC creating the original save. Then I installed the xci (and updated on OFW) so I didn't have to take the card out to switch games. I'm currently installing the nsp's to system memory for BotW, update, and both DLCs with DevMenu. I did backup my saves with Checkpoint incase something goes wrong.

I've gotten information from a reliable source that trimmed games in fact report differently than non-trimmed games. SX OS doesn't emulate trimmed games sizes correctly. Whether that'll get you banned or not, no one knows.
