Having only followed Switch hacking via a few news thread subjects and now reading exploits are being patched.....

If I wanted to purchased and hack a Switch tomorrow, what specific hardware do I buy? Any Switch running the 4.0 firmware or less?

I'm interested in Homebrew/emulation and also Piracy (because I love ROM hacks, translations, HD texture patches, etc).

Cheers,

Is there a way to unlink an account and keep playing existing saves for digital games? Or will unlinking be the end of those game saves?

Here are the serial numbers to be on the lookout for that have been confirmed to have patched the current bootrom exploit.
XAJ700438 - XAJ700439 and XAW700183. If you're looking for cutoff points, anything below XAJ70043 has worked while for the W series, XAW70016 is the highest known unit to have not been patched. The lowest firmware for patched units are 4.0.1 found in the J series and 4.1 for the W series.

You would have to re-install them as .NSPs via SX OS V1.3. The requirements to get that up and running is finding DevMenu, being on 5.1, and locating .NSP files for your installed titles. Un-linking your Nintendo Account will make them stop working...I think.

I want CFW on my Switch for the express purpose of using cheats for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Ocotopath and any future single player RPGs I buy.

If I put CFW on my Switch, will I still be able to buy games from the Nintendo Store, and update them?

I'm about to install SX OS on my Switch. I'm doing the backup of the nand now.
Any advice about the battery? What should I do for it not to drain (too fast) ? I have read a lot of thing but can't find a clear answer

You can always restart your console in original firmware and use eshop.

Can somebody confirm if Mario Tennis Aces is playable on Hekate? I know for SX there was an update needed to get the game to work because it uses a different kind of cartridge than other switch games.

Yes, unlinking did make the game stop working. If I do the devmenu and install the nsp, the game will pick up where I left off?

Hey guys, picked up a switch today with 1.0.0 firmware. I've tried reading through a few different threads but really have to idea where to start with getting homebrew on to the device. Most of the tutorials seem to be for more updated firmware. Can someone point me to a tutorial or the right direction for getting homebrew going on the switch? Ive read the stickied guide for homebrew 101 through F-G/Tegrasmash but not sure if this is the route to go with a 1.0.0 console.

If you're banned, you will only be able to updates. If you modify the Switch in any way and go online with it, you are always risking a ban. Weigh the risks of being banned with how much you want to buy games from the eShop.

If you mean via LayeredFS, yes it works. Check here for what title is compatible with Aces: https://gbatemp.net/threads/layeredfs-title-compatibility-list.507749/

Is it safe to remove the sd card when the switch is in sleep mode wihout to risk corrupt data?!
Nope, sleep mode counts as the console being on.

Follow this tutorial on how to setup homebrew: https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-1-x-5-x-how-to-run-homebrew-on-your-nintendo-switch.506529/
Not all homebrew work on 1.0 so follow this guide on how to update to any firmware while being able to return to 1.0 at any time: https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-...nofficially-without-burning-any-fuses.507461/

With the error code "2124-4007" (The one that restricts access for the console) Will this affect the account also or just the console itself?

It always affects the consoles but rarely affects the account. An easy way to check is by doing the following:
Ok this might be good to note;
A console eshop ban sucks BUT downloading games from the eshop is still possible without any tricks and through normal Nintendo ways;

1 - Just purchase the game you want through your pc using your Nintendo ID on the Nintendo eshop.
2 - Then on your banned Switch; Go to your user/profile (left top of screen)
3 - Go to User Settings and select, Update Download Progress
And voila your game will still download to your console just fine. (have tried this with 3 titles just to be sure)

No Console ehsop access my ass :D

I have a 4.0.1 Switch and haven't modded it at all. Should I stay on 4.0.1 or update? I was going to buy a jig on eBay and maybe a SX license or the pro but can I play games that require higher firmwares using the backup loader?

4.0.1 has access to an unreleased exploit that doesn't involve the need for a jig and USB cable. If you are fine with using a jig & USB cable, putting the console into permanent sleep mode after using the jig & USB cable once, or using AutoRCM, then there is no problem with updating. If you do wish to update, I recommend following this guide on how to do so in case you wish to return to 4.0.1 at any time: https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-...nofficially-without-burning-any-fuses.507461/
The guide may look long and daunting, but rest assured it is very noob-friendly, straightforward, and guaranteed to work provided you follow all of the steps exactly as they are written.

Fortunately, the account didn't get effected by the console ban. Can it still be salvaged by using the Transfer method in the settings?
(Sorry for a followed up question btw)

Hmm, haven't heard anyone try that before but it doesn't sound like a good idea mostly due to the fact that you are transferring over whatever traces that banned the first console onto the second potentially. If you want to save your account, its better to just call Nintendo and explain the situation. If they haven't banned your account yet, I don't see why they won't unlink it for you unless your not willing to renounce your hacking ways (what they don't know won't hurt them).

Question here for the future of Switch hacking,
1. Is Retroarch/Lakka.tv going to be what most people try to develop 3D emulators for (N64, GC, Wii, PSX, 3DS, etc.)? After looking it all up, Lakka has TONS of problems...(Sound, Exfat, etc.)
2. Backup loading, How will the scene deal with future Switch games that require 6.0+ firmwares?
3. XCI vs. NSP. I prefer XCI because of ease of use but which one do you guys think will be the standard?
4. Rating of 0 to 10, How safe is it to only go online with a hacked switch to update games? (while 5.1 is the latest)

  1. Nah, there are some semi-working ports of other emulators for the other systems you just named (off the top of my head, Dolphin and a DS emu have been ported). Also, porting the 3DS would be much simpler with Citra than via Retroarch. Could be doable in Lakka but I sense immense framerate issues
  2. We have a way of updating the firmware without burning fuses (which is what prevented us from downgrading in the first place) so not much need for a firmware spoofer. Also, EmuNAND is in the works by at least 2 devs so you can look forward to that.
  3. Considering how much security is implemented in .NSP files, .XCI are arguably safer as well as not requiring double the size of the file when they are first ran. Still .NSP does carry certain advantages such as being smaller overall as well as reducing the amount of times you would need to swap SD cards for backups. The problem is since both of these can only be done via SX OS, its down to whatever dev can make a free version of either to see which will come out on top.
