It would be really cool. The nes classic and snes claasic were kind of unnecessary. Because the Wii could easily emulate both of those, with fce ultra gx and snes9x gx. But N64 emulation has never been perfect. With the release of a possible N64 mini, this will no longer be a problem. It'll probably have the N64 motherboard and expansion pack built-in. I'm pretty excited about this. Finally a way to play all the N64 games with perfect emulation.

Of course not, I'm not stupid. Any modern emulator can do the job FAR much better, being more pretty and versatile all-around. But silly unsound ppl may buy this outdated Chinese tablet for 'collecting' purposes, if this lie let them feel better about themselves.

Warning: controversial post incoming. Stop reading if you can't stand disagreements of opinions.

To be honest: I'm all but looking forward to it. The fifth generation of consoles were by far my least interesting ones. PC gaming was maturing in 3D (meaning: FPS'es were becoming a thing), and real time strategy games were also popular. Both relied on the mouse, which didn't translate well.
I'll give the n64 credit as a necessary generation: its classics laid a foundation of great successors on consoles. But the games themself? No. Sorry, but even their classics (of whom i hear have perfect emulation) just fill me with a 'meh' at best.

Don't get me wrong: if Nintendo can pull it off and sell it: all the better. I don't have to be the target audience for the thing. :)

Finally a way to play all the N64 games with perfect emulation.
Hmmm... The nes and snes were relatively easy: a raspberry pi could emulate these (near?) perfect. The reason emulation on this generation is so wonky is because the games relied on apparently pretty exotic hardware. It remains to be seen whether nintendo can produce something within a decent price point.

And... Okay, I've got to ask: just which games are you looking forward to play that isn't made by nintendo (that is released as vc on wii and wiiu) or rare (whose owners - Microsoft - probably won't cooperate much) ?

The NES and SNES Mini were just some pis with emulators on them. There's absolutely no way that Nintendo would make an N64 Mini that's literally just N64 hardware. At best, we might get a unit similar to the NES/SNES Mini with optimized emulators for specific games, similar to Virtual Console.

Are there even enough games for an N64 mini? The N64 had a pretty poor library.
Regions and their game numbers [N64]
JP: 196
NA: 296
PAL: 242

The nintendo 64 have a small library compared to other consoles, HOWEVER, most of the games on this conole are pretty god damn good tittles, and not some ransomware like some consoles do.
  • Ocarina Of Time
  • Majoras Mask
  • GoldenEye 007
  • Perfect Dark
  • Jet Force Gemini
  • Mario 64
  • Super Smash Brothers
  • Super Mario Party [1-2-3]
  • Super Mario Tennis
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Banjo Tooie
  • Banjo Kazooie
  • Diddys Kong Racing
  • Yoshi´s Story
  • Bomberman 64
  • Bomberman Hero
  • Pokemon Stadium [1-2]
  • Snowboard Kids
  • Turok
  • Conkers Bad Fur Day
  • Star Fox 64
  • Tony Hawks
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Paper Mario
  • Pokemon Snap
  • South Park 64
And many.. many more....

There you have it, 30 games for the n64 mini

Well let's see:

Super Mario 64
Mario kart 64
Wave race 64
Star fox 64
Super smash Bros
Yoshi's story
Banjo-kazooie
Banjo-tooie
Jet force gemini
Conker's bad fur day
Goldeneye 007
Perfect dark
Mickey's speedway usa
Bomberman 64
Bomberman hero
Diddy Kong racing
Mischief makers
Resident evil 2
Kirby 64 the crystal shards
Rayman 2 the great escape
Donkey Kong 64
Pokemon stadium
Pokemon stadium 2
Pokemon snap
The legend of Zelda ocarina of Time
The legend of Zelda majora's mask
Star wars rouge squadron
Megaman 64
F-zero X
Paper mario

Obviously I don't expect all of these games to be included. But that's where the hacking comes in. The nes mini and snes mini were both hacked, so you add more games (roms) to them. I expect this will also be the case for the N64 mini.

And realize that even though two people listed games for the system, some of them will not be on a reproduction system like "N64 Classic" due to licensing issues. At best you can only expect plentiful Nintendo games, and if that's the case, they probably wouldn't even try doing one, unless people are satisfied with that.

I just wish they could make a better controller for that system when they had the chance, who the heck came up with that thing? Look like how batman drives his bat-mobile. :P

Dude, read my post again. I know all these games won't be included. What I'm hoping for is that this thing will be hacked (like the nes and snes classic were) so we can manually put the games we want on there

I posted this in another thread, but the same info is relevant here so i'll quote myself:

Pixel graphics of the NES and SNES era look great today and the style is emulated in modern 'retro' styled games, as well as the old sprites being iconic these days, which is why the NES and SNES classic were successful. Even if you didn't live though that generation, it is still relevant in 2016/7/8.

The N64? even the most ardent goldeneye players struggle to get over the graphics these days and anyone unfamiliar with it from back in the day is just going to see some kinda of terribly made cellphone game, plus, Mario64, Zelda64, the 2 key titles that would be likely to headline the line up have already been rehashed relatively recently. Would we even get Rare games on it anyway? No Rare, No need for Mario and Zelda. No point.

Retro, for the mass market should stay 2D, in my opinion.

With the lack of third party game options, there might not be any N64 Classic (excuses if it sounds unhopeful) The whole idea of the system is to have a selection of games that are quality choices for large range of players to enjoy at low price. Without a decent amount of those games, it would most likely not be a thing or if it was would just have nintendo only games and I dunno how people would respond to that.

I am not seeing the option for them to flog a cheapo ARM box with some so so emulation for the N64. Maybe in a few years but not right now. Also I am not sure the N64 (largely considered a failure) has quite the same nostalgia buzz, and looks and runs like arse meaning you will probably need to do tarty texture replacement/framerate uncap things which also goes against the cheapo arm box thing.

Ocarina Of Time
Majoras Mask
GoldenEye 007
Perfect Dark
Jet Force Gemini
Mario 64
Super Smash Brothers
Super Mario Party [1-2-3]
Super Mario Tennis
Super Mario Kart
Donkey Kong 64
Banjo Tooie
Banjo Kazooie
Diddys Kong Racing
Yoshi´s Story
Bomberman 64
Bomberman Hero
Pokemon Stadium [1-2]
Snowboard Kids
Turok
Conkers Bad Fur Day
Star Fox 64
Tony Hawks
Resident Evil 2
Paper Mario
Pokemon Snap
South Park 64

Both Zeldas have been remade in better form since but OK, they certainly trot them out all the time.

Goldeneye so not only James Bond but a Rare title. Given MS is doing well with their Rare classics I doubt we will see this.
Perfect Dark = Rare
Jet Force Gemini = Rare.
Mario 64 could be done I guess.
Smash Brothers has not aged that well (I figure there is a reason that despite being as hopeless as they are the competitive scene starts with the GC offering) but OK.
Probably the same for the next ones, though I suppose at least the speedrunners have some fun with Kart.
Rare title

Bomberman could be interesting. That said not so many really liked it, I did though.
A pokemon stadium without the easy ability to shuffle your pokemon game across? I guess they could do a tie in with virtual console or something but eh.
I guess Racjin and/or Atlus might do something, especially if they are hitting them up for Bomberman.
"Disney Interactive Studios" you say. I am not sure if they or Capcom own the rights to various things these days but given they made some of the best games on the NES and SNES I doubt we will see Turok.
Rare title
THPS1? Really? I appreciate kicking it a bit old school but OK, I know 2 is on there as well which is better. That said for 1 I doubt you will get the music and that means you will be ROM hacking it to remove it/add new.
You reckon the RE2 remake peeps would undercut their own title like that?
OK
Meh but OK.
It would be an impressive feat of lawyering to get that. Also I only ever played the PC version (this was at a time when that really meant something) but are you sure you want to put that forward as a quality game?

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark (although the XBLA version is far superior in every way), Mischief Makers. As for the Rare games, Microsoft is being ultra-cooperative with Minecraft, don't see why they wouldn't license something like DK64 or the Banjo games for a royalty.

As much as i harte to point out out, @FAST6191 and @subtledemise mentioned which games are owned by nintendo or rare. I didn't add that restriction to point out the n64 was just a duopoly, but because nintendo rehashed all their games and rare isn't going to happen.

I agree with you that if it gets hacked, it would be great. But wouldn't it be easier to just hope for better n64 support rather than this "IF nintendo makes and released a n64 mini and IF it gets hacked and IF that means all other games play well, then that'll be something i welcome" ?

I mean...i recently tried n64 fighting force on a high regarded Android emulator... The screen was upside down. Not the most fun experience, but hey... It'll probably be better on pc anyway. :P

As far as N64 emulation goes. I am not expecting general purpose emulation here. I expect game specific which will make injecting ROMs as annoying as it has been since we all started doing that however many years ago.

I could understand maybe some of the Rare games if they were with Nintendo characters and thus were otherwise languishing, assuming Nintendo went and slapped down a reasonably fat cheque for it.

MS and Minecraft I don't see as cooperation or any kind of generous. Minecraft is a wide appeal... practically a service at this point in time.
Their Rare collections and individual versions thereof are niche appeal things though. To sell them on the hypothetical emulation box would go against them and their interests from where I sit.

Given the last two minis I think it is a given this one is gonna get hacked too.

I mean ninty can't even lock down their main consoles, let alone these small cash grabs.
