Magic Leap To Ship Its First Headset This Summer

magic leap.JPG

In a livestream yesterday, Magic Leap narrowed the release window of its first headset, the Magic Leap One Creator Edition. After finally unveiling what the device will look like late last year, the company announced that it will ship this year without a definite window. We now have one which is presumably summer of 2018 without a specific date or a price. However, the company previously mentioned that it would cost as much as a high-end smartphone. Magic Leap also revealed during the livestream that the device will use an Nvidia Tegra X2 processor and pack two of Nvidia's Denver processor cores. As for the OS, it was previously reported that the Magic Leap One will run on Lumin OS which seems to be a custom-built OS from open source and Linux-based components whose SDK is already open to developers. Additionally, AT&T followed up by announcing that it will be the exclusive US carrier partner for Magic Leap.

You can watch a replay of the stream right below which is not quite what I expected for it only showed a prerecorded demo instead of a live one. Nevertheless, with the imminent release of the device, we are bound to learn more about it soon.

Oh damn, so it'll be out in the wild soon! The cost might be a good indicator of when we could get Switch 2, or Switch X2 as it were. My bet is it's cheap enough around 2020/2021.

the rumor is that it's gonna cost between 1000 to 3000 bucks.
I can see $800-$1000, this being a standalone wireless VR/AR HMD, but any more than that would kill most of their sales. Then again, AT&T being the only seller in the US doesn't exactly inspire confidence. If this requires a data plan for some reason then it'll be a flop for sure.

Is there a full video of actual gameplay and use rather then a live stream of people mostly talking. i wanna see what its capable of and most is dated stuff. dont wanna expect a giant whale in my living room and only get a guppy in my cup of coffee.

Even after all this time, this thing still screams scam..

We will have to wait and see, but I'll roast my butt on an open flame if this thing turns out to be even remotely decent.

It seems feasible enough with the low FoV of those lenses, but it definitely won't live up to high-end PC VR. With a Tegra X2 it might look slightly better than PSVR on an OG PS4, but that depends on the PPI of the lenses. I wouldn't expect much for battery life, either, 3-4 hours max.

My expectations are a product far inferior to the current competition in almost all aspects.

To be fair, there's not much competition out there in terms of standalone wireless VR/AR HMDs. OTOH, nobody has proven pass-through lenses like this can actually work yet, so the image quality could be dim/poor even for VR games.

And the grey Samsung Gear VR controller.... The whole pic looks like an amateur PhotoShop job.

Skimmed the vid, from what I saw, PS1 graphics, a webcam of a room, and some 'mon GO looking monster? I will stick with Gear and Note 8 for now thanks, then go PC when I get the $$$.

So I'm confusing by something, this looks like AR only but is it only AR? Or both AR and VR?
Augmented reality is when a virtual characters or semi environment inhabits and interacts with the real world.

Virtual reality is when you are surrounded by a virtual space.

Thanks for the reply but I knew that already. What I meant was: what does Magic Leap provide, AR or VR or both?
