I just verified, yes you can. I recovered from a completely dead battery by accidentally leaving switch in RCM mode overnight. Plugged it in and after 45 minutes autorcm was accepting payloads again.
Oh boy, thanks a lot man! I almost got myself in trouble cuz of that other rcm theres on the forum. Anyway, thank you man!

I had a brand new switch, straight out of the box. After configuring the pro dongle and setting up the memory card with games. I set up autoRcM and shortly thereafter the battery died. I seen the battery icon come up right before it died.

I have left the switch plugged into a wall outlet for over 12 hours. The switch doesn’t show sign of charging (no lights).

How would I attempt to power it back on? Just power? Or power and + vol button? With dongle? Without dongle? With jig?

Thanks.

I keep getting a black screen.

It happened to me and its scary. It eventually worked but keep in mind that charging is very slow in RCM mode. Takes 45 min to 1 hour to get barely enough juice to power on the switch.

GUYS.

YOUR DONGLE HAS NO BATTERY, IT NEEDS NO CHARGING, IT NEVER DIES.

IT TAKES POWER FROM YOUR CONSOLE.

I simply fail to get where or why people are thinking the dongle needs to be charged.

That LED is to indicate the battery charge on the console..... no light, then charge your console.

Stop connecting a device that has no battery, on charge.

how many of you put normal batteries into a battery recharger.... what happens!

I swear this i thought was a simple fool proof device, simply plug and play..... god has evolved the n00bs.

You know...capacitors do not suck energy from air...so technically sx os pro could die. So dont say "IT NEEDS NO CHARGING, IT NEVER DIES."

Incorrect. While it doesn't have a typical battery, it has capacitors which store a charge. It can only draw power (and thus energizes the caps) from the Switch once the OS has booted. The dongle can and will die after repeated uses (if you don't boot the OS or if you unplug it right away) or over the period of about a week. If the dongle is dead then it wont be able to push a payload. Make sure you know what you are talking about before you insult others' intelligence.

Gonna sound like a hypocrite, but he's been doing this since the Switch was released (at least)

SORRY, I THINK YOU'RE WRONG

  • Q: Yikes, those are two huge caps in render picture? Is that going to taser my Switch, damage my system, or zap me!
    A:
Super Cap’s actually (super-capacitor), 0.35F 2.7V, given the transport issues with Lithium based batteries SuperCap’s are fast becoming the go to temporary power source.
No zapping ( very low voltage ) and we limit the charge current to ~400mA peak for either USB port.
  • Q: Huh, two caps, how do they get 'charged'? Do I have now and then plug my dongle into micro-USB cable to charge it, what happens when it runs out of power? — Why not battery instead? — Does it instead drain my Switch battery, what happens if I leave it plugged in.
    A:
The SuperCap’s are charged from either usb port ( USB-C or Micro USB ). The caps offer approximately 1 week standby time with enough energy left for one boot, or at least 5 successive boots without the opportunity to auto-charge. Charge to 80% is achieved (automatically) within 1-2 seconds of entry into the Nintendo start menu. We are working reducing that considerably … (see above for why not battery). Because we are powered by s-cap’s we have a very power conscious design.
Leaving the dongle in the console for more than a minute is pointless but will do no harm in any way to the dongle and drain very little battery ( currently we draw ~25mA but will work on reducing that considerably after ~1-2 minutes charge mode).
ACCORDING TO TEAM XECUTOR, IT DOESN'T CHARGE UNTIL THE SWITCH IS BOOTED

Okay, so here's the thing, if you have autoRCM and your switch dies, plug it into the wall directly with the power cable that came with your switch, and wait 45 minutes to an hour. No you will not see a charging indicator nor any LED lights or signs of life during this process. Wait 45 minutes to an hour and then unplug the switch from power, plug the dongle in, and press the power button.

If you don't see life right away try holding the power button for 15 seconds and then press the power button again. If you do not see the payload deploy, plug the switch back into the wall and let it sit for 3 hours and repeat the process. If you still don't see life, deploy a payload from your computer or phone to rule out a defective dongle. If you STILL do not see signs of life, you may be one of the VERY RARE unlucky few that need to hard reset the battery by disconnecting it, and re-attaching before charging.

Once you are in Horizon (Switch OS) immediately plug your switch back in and let it charge normally. This really isn't that hard of a concept to grasp. If you don't know what RCM mode does, then please educate yourself first before installing AutoRCM, or don't use it all. In nearly 99% of the cases, people believing their switch is bricked from AutoRCM + Battery dying are simply not charging their battery long enough, or giving up the moment they do not see the charging indicators / backlight come on. Those same people end up finding out later it was user error and almost always report back their switch is working correctly.

I've debunked that AutoRCM battery brick thread that was circulating misinformation countless times after proving charging works from a completely dead battery. Please follow what I outlined above and actually implement patience and critical troubleshooting before posting: "MY SWITCH WON'T TURN ON". That only serves to spread further misinformation.
[/book]

TLDR; Your switch is NOT bricked, you only think it is because you are not patient enough

The thing I don't understand is why not just leave the switch in sleep mode instead of powering down every time.

I do know taking the SD card out maybe for the power down, but other than that load the payload after putting your sd card stuff on or use ftp and you don't really have to power off any more really.

Some people do it out of habit to conserve battery and are unaware that a shutdown just knocks them back to RCM mode. Unfortunately this is caused by the lack of built-in documentation, public knowledge, and misinformation spread about how RCM behaves.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
