Hacking Any reason to stay on firmware 4.0.1 with SX pro ordered?

Hi. I just ordered by 2nd switch a few days ago and it came with firmware 4.0.1. It seems SX OS will work in 5.1 and more, and only 3.0 works for homebrew.
Any reason to stay on 4.0.1 or can I update to 5.1?

Note: The 1st switch is my son's and it is already updated to 5.1

Warmboot hacks in the future that won't require a dongle/jig to boot for consoles on 4.1.0 and lower. Homebrew is working on all systems via Hekate, and soon with SX and Atmosphere.

That's warmboot, as in it can be launched from HBL after the system is turned on. Coldboot is for launching at power-on from a powered-off state, like the 3DS.

Untethered coldboot will probably never come to anything above 3.0.2. On 4.0.1, the best you can really hope for is an untethered warmboot exploit.

Since SX OS is unlikely to support emuNAND anytime in the near future, you might have to update in order to play newer games.

So, basically, the only reason to stay on 4.0.1 is the hope than in the future there will be a CFW that won't need the RCM trick, thus avoiding the dongle, vs the certainty that we will need the firmware for some games and to access online.

SciresM already confirmed 4.1.0 and below getting a softboot method.

....a softboot method that will require user interaction as in, opening up a browser and visiting a web (or self-hosted) site. Not as friendly/easy as just using the T-X dongle, especially if you're out and about somewhere.

Emunand on the Switch will be worse than it was on the 3DS because you'll need to perform the step above. I think the ONLY advantage that Atmosphere's emunand will have over the SX Pro is Atmosphere will probably support (via forked builds) eShop games sooner. SX Pro will support backups sooner so pick your poison.

However, T-X said that emunand is something they're looking into so I can see a time down the road where you boot your console with the T-X jig/dongle, boot into emunand of the latest firmware and play your eShop games that way. Or who knows maybe T-X will figure out a way to let us play eShop titles, then, IMHO, emunand will be pointless....... like it eventually was on the 3DS. But after looking at the eShop games, and realizing that I've already played all the ones I want on other platforms, I have zero interest in anything from that library. Thankfully, their 1st party games all have a physical release and I've been collecting those. Have my 256GB microsd card ready to go!

Remember though, as others have said, if your emunand gets banned...... so does sysnand.

After I install the SX Pro, I'm keeping my 4.1 Switch off-line. When I start coming across games that require 5.1, I'll gladly update. I have no interest in emunand or a softboot method that requires me accessing some internal/external site. Heck, I might just update to 5.1 now.

I get that this is TX subforum of GBATemp but since Atmosphere will have EmuNAND support so those who use it can still do stuff like play online games such as Smash or Splatoon and access the eShop. Also, if you plan to respond by saying that Atmosphere's not done yet while TX's CFW is, Atmosphere can theoretically be released anytime between tomorrow and the end of time. To further add on, there are plenty of people who will be using both TX's CFW and Atmosphere. There is no reason to prefer one over the other outside of personal bias.

I intend to be fully transparent about this shit, especially going forwards. At present, I'm not aware of any non-RCM means of getting code execution from coldboot. To the best of my knowledge, nobody else is, either.

Just update and fit a trinket / other SAMD device. Fit it internally, autoRCM, coldboothax`d switch. I was expecting my replacement to arrive this morning. But it didn`t. So write up and pics coming next week now. But it aint rocket science.

The same things you could lose by using sx(and atmosphere too) if it gets you banned by going online tho.

Same. I'm not touching my 1.0.0. That thing is staying put.

I'm not sure too sure what to do with my 4.1 though. I pre-ordered TX but I think I may keep it where it is for the time being, at least until Atmosphere and emuNAND release. I want the best of all worlds!

TX SX relies on sysNAND so if you intend to use the SX going forward you really only have one option if you want to play newer games.
