SNES game compatibility on PSP is very low or required a lot of thinkering with settings (and still, you have to got heavy frame-skipping), whereas on 3DS is virtually perfect. I remember having lots of problem running Super Metroid and Super Castlevania smootly with no graphical glitches, and those are not even special chip games.
Still, PSP has perfect PS1 compatibility via the official Sony emulator.

As a general rule of thumb:
NES: Both. Use VirtuaNES on 3DS, better compatibility than VC Injection. Some game were re-released as 3D Classic on 3DS
GB/C: Both
GBA: 3DS Injection is better, PSP emulation is good enough and has save states
SNES: 3DS Injection and for special chip or some hacked games Snes9X
MS+MD: Dunno, emulation on PSP was very good. Some games were re-released as 3D Classic on 3DS
PCE: Dunno, both I think. Use TemperPCE on 3DS, Injection compatibility is very low
PS1: PSP
DS: 3DS of course, with TWL Loader you get better sound and better framerate
N64: Non-existant on 3DS (but you have amazing remakes of Zelda and StarFox), a very very limited amount of games can somehow be played on PSP with DaedalusX64

30 days ouch . . . but to answer your question n3ds . . . i dont know what level of psychical restriction you will have and in the event that you cant play retro games because you cant move your arm or pain or such you could still play some one handed touchscreen only games . . . just a thought

i'm leaning towards 2ds now thanks to the smaller weight and ds compatability. though I suppose an 8bitdo and my phone could work too (i'm assuming the 2ds has way better battery life though so that would be a huge boon to not need to plug er back in too often)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! if anyone else has anything else to add i'm all ears you've all been very helpful and I appreciate it

You can also buy the biggest Anker powerbank you find on Amazon, a usb to 3ds plug cable and have infinite battery, both for your 2DS XL and your phone.

hands down, the psp. emulation is nice and cleaner on the 3ds, but the one screen that stays blank is distracting and the dpad isnt that great. the psp has only one screen and the dpad is much better.

This will be an unpopular view but unless you want to play PS1 titles and relatively reasonable N64 emulation I think the New 3DS/2DS blows the PSP out of the water.

I got given a PSP to use / mod a while ago because of a few great retro compilations it has. I couldn't get over what a poor experience it was in comparison to N3DS. The feel, screen quality, sluggishness of the UI..I could go on. As much as wanted to work my way though Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts and get my fix of Gradius Gaiden (my PS2 is out of commission at the moment) I just found it a bit unpleasant, sadly.

Without the fond nostalgia of living through the PSP's homebrew explosion I could never recommend it as a machine to use in 2018.

It’s not unpopular it’s just weird to compare psp to n3ds in terms of sluggishness since they’re ages apart.
Anyway, the way you describe it, it was probably a psp 1000/e1000 (vs 2000 or even better 3000 with beautiful display) and with some heavy modding or too many games in the XMB. A psp fresh out of the box isn’t sluggish.

If one is into native PSP games and PSone (which is a huge chapter of “retro”), PSP is a godsend, there’s no way around it.

Although a PSvita 2000 + Hori remote play assist grip + Adrenaline could be even better for the ultimate full dual analog mobile PsOne experience.

It was a pre-launch model on original firmware, so whatever the very first one was. And I'm aware that its hardly a fair comparison - but it is what it is in my case. The PSP still has a legendary rep for being a brilliant way to enjoy some wonderfully optimised emulators but I do doubt that the best PSP emus can compete with what Bubbles emus do even on O3DS.

Ultimately I didn't end up doing much with it because for retro emulation (aside from the obviously great native PS1 playback - which I did mention) the resolution just isn't as appropriate as the 240p panel that 3DS units have. Perhaps I've been long spoiled by the natural scanlines you get with 1:1 integer scaling options found on 3DS emulators, an effect that just isn't possible on the PSP's higher resolution screen. The games found on the Gradius Collection were either open to being hideously stretched or letterboxed into a tiny window. I didn't want to play these games this way at all.

Anyhow, I'm not trying to preach. Just my personal experience with being severely underwhelmed.

Never thought you were preaching, just pointing out why you may have had bad luck (the worst screen out of 5 models, maybe something wrong causing the sluggishness like a bad memory card or modding related issue).

Fact is Ps1 catalog is so vast it may very well scratch someone’s retro itch for a month...RPGs, arcade ports, collections...better version of some SNES games...lots of Final Fantasy...

In his case a 2DS XL is better also because in a bed you better be able to tilt the screen...and yes VC + injects + DS + some emulators are better at “everything retro except PSone”...

If you wanna do double duty (mobile and then CRT tv) and make it all about the ps1 (surely more games than you can handle), you could go
- PSP Go + microSD adapter mod + 200GB microSD
- PSP Go cradle + composite video out cable (I suppose CRTs in an hospital lack component)
- PSone classics + injected PSone eboots from ready to play collections you see in some places
- a genuine dualshock3 in a cool color

Can’t skip Ps1 if you like rpgs..
Is there an m2 card adapter now?, I would have liked to buy one, if only my screen worked.

That makes sense. I'm actually a huge fan of the PS1 library and might be tempted to give a more modern PSP model a whirl just for the eboots. Thanks for the input.

I think the psp has a better retro library including ps1 games,

while the 3ds has mostly gb,gbc, gba, nds and 3ds with some nes, snes and mabe some genisis here and there. The 3ds also has ps1 emulation, but it's not very good.

The psp pretty much has gb,gbc, gba, some n64,neo geo,genisis,nes,snes,ps1 and psp.You also have a emulator for retro pc games,Can't remember the name at the moment.

The psp seems to have the better veriety.

PS Vita + henkaku + Adrenaline + Retroarch and you have the thing !
How good is psp emulation on the vita? I've been depating between a psp and a vita for quite awhile now.The vita mainly because of persona 4 golden and the psp due to its open library of retro games and homebrew.

Is it easy to get a hackable vita for a affordable price or are they mostly costly for that reason?
You need to find a 3.60 vita. Depending on where you are located it can be a bit difficult. I got mine for approx. 110€ (boxed and with 2 or 3 games IIRC)
You can do some emulation, including PSP, with a 3.63 vita installing ARK-2 BUT it's a bit more complicated to do.
3.65+ you can do nothing right now but we are expecting Henkaku/enso to be released by September this year.

If you wanna put a cheap Vita under your bed waiting for better times, by next year 3.61-3.68 should be hackable (but 3.67-3.68 will not have enso, so you need to click something after every reset to activate the hack).
Today, look for a 3.60 as said.
