Hello Nintendo Fans,
be careful with the PSP 1000 C-STICK mod. :shy:
After using it about half a year, my New 3DS XL has a small dent on the bottom right corner (see in picture below). :(
It is very small and you dont notice it while playing (you only see it in light).
I am not sure if the dent is on the actual screen or only on my protective foil (but i think it is on the actual screen).
So you should consider the fact that this can also happen to you if you plan to do this mod! :teach:

When I did the mod, the C-Stick was actually shorter than the useless stick that nintendo puts there.
I have a "small" N3DS though, so maybe the display is farer away from the c-stick on my unit.
The c-stick is still far from usable with this mod imo, the addon for the OG3DS is far superior even though it is bulky.
With that useless nub they never saw the necessity to even offer an addon even though the thumb hurts after a while and it is so inprecise.

Before I close my 3DS I just put a small microfiber cloth just to prevent scratches. Do you keep your 3DS in a case or just your pockets? The extra pressure might be the cause of it.

I dont put it in my pocket and i keep it in my case, but I think there is no pressure in it.

Hmm, you are right.
Mine isnt all way in my New 3DS, but i bought the PSP 1000 ones.
Maybe i need to put more pressure on it?
Or do I have to buy a special PSP c-stick?

Real Sony factory replacement PSP-1000 caps no longer exist. The best go-to brand is Insten as they produce the most accurate replicas.

if you bought generic caps from eBay, you might have gotten unlucky getting a set with poor fitment tolerance. The cap is suppose to sit flush and really close to the case. Did you happen to use glue on yours? In case you got a wobbly cap and resorted to using glue to fix it, you may have used too much.

If you did get this brand for your PSP-1000 cap, I'm sorry to say you didn't press fit it deeper into the c-stick peg.

i bought these:
https://www.ebay.de/itm/4x-Ersatz-A...476226?hash=item25d90076c2:g:06MAAOSwWjpZt7HS

but i guess they are (like you said) cheap made and thats why it doesnt fit properly.

how you are supossed to fix it with glue? I dont want to glue it on my new 3ds because then it would be permanent.

can you recommend me one specific c-stick?

It's hard to tell the differences between these caps by different companies because they all come from China, and they all look the same.

I mentioned fixing these caps with glue because it's possible to get a wobbly cap that rocks too loosely side-to-side.

Here's a post I wrote in another thread not too long about that talks about this problem. It doesn't happen to everyone, but does happen frequently enough that you'll have to resort to glue. https://gbatemp.net/threads/c-stick-replacement-help.502062/#post-7947999

The type of glue you use will be semi-permanent (ie, NOT super glue).

So PSP 1000 c-stick from Insten fits perfectly?

I never touched the c stick due to these kind of issues arising. The c stick is fine for use in small periods of time when i'm outside, when im inside my house, i simply use input redirection, use a controller and play the heck out of a 2 stick games. Very few utilizes it but im a hardcore monster hunter player so...... you might consider the way i play the games too so you dont have to stay and keep burdened by the little nipple by nintendo. That way, i also preserve my 3ds lifespans and my buttons are still crispy after a almost a year of gaming.

Nonetheless, thank you for the heads up.

Super low profile Thinkpad nub >>>> PSP-Stick >>>>>>>>> C-Stick

Could you show us how does that looks like on the 3ds?

I would also like to see what it looks like :)

Can you show how it looks?

I haven't seen someone do this mod in real life. I made a photoshop mock up once in my semi-hardmod thread.

I too want to see if someone has pulled this off.

Edit 2 - In order to do this mod, you have to take a PSP cap and sand it flat. You take a thinkpad pointing stick cap and sand the bottom of it flat until you get the cap face. Lastly, you glue the two together.

As stated by @CrazyForCashews, the ones who did it say you need the super low profile caps. The other varieties by Lenovo does not work; you might be able to sand down the base to lower the height but there might be differences in their shaft diameter and center hole depth.

The OEM part number is 4XH0L55146.

https://www.cdw.com/product/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Super-Low-Profile-trackpoint-cap/4236757
https://www.ebay.com/itm/ThinkPad-Super-Low-Profile-TrackPoint-Cap-x-2-pcs/292210375826

You can also purchase these directly from lenovo.com (should be available for any region).
USA - https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/benep...CCKIT-BO-ThinkPad-TrackPoint-4mm/p/4XH0L55146

You should be able to add the part number directly to your cart (recommended):
https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/beneplace/cart

I highly recommend purchasing these directly from Lenovo as it has free shipping, and you get 10 caps for about $14 ~ $15 after tax. You also know you're getting the real deal. Pass them out to your buddies or split the cost between each other if you think you have too much.

Apparently, one of Dell's blue pointing stick works too.
