I have both, actually i have 2 regular ds, 1 dsixl, 1 n2dsxl, and 2 N3dsxl's. And yes you should get the N2dsxl because you'll have the entire 3ds library of games which is one of the best of any console.

new 2DS XL is worth it because it is a 3DS. This expands your library of games to play and can play DS games native anyway.

Of the 3DS models, however, I would recommend the new 3DS XL before the new 2DS XL. You can buy refurbished new 3DS XLs for the same price, if not lower, than the new 2DS XL. It would have 3D feature and quality housing in comparison to the pointless 3D photos and cheap childrens toy plastic of 2DS models.

This is a good overview of 2DS XL:

actually i like the lighter and slimmer body of the n2dsxl and easy access to sd card. The only advantage (besides the actual 3d) would be if you get a n3dsxl that has an IPS screen. Those could be hard to find but well worth it. Other than that I really like the n2dsxl.

i don't have 2ds xl. but i do have dsi xl and new 3ds xl. and i like more the dsi xl for two reasons. first reason is the dpad. the dpad on the dsi xl is so much better in my opinion than on the 3ds (i prefer the dpad over the analog stick becuse i play mostly 2d games). seconed reason is the pixels on the screen. becuse of the big screen and the low resolution on the dsi xl you can see the pixels. and i don't know why but i like to see those big pixels on the dsi xl screen. it feels retro to me. but if you want and care about newer nintendo games then you should definitely get the 3ds. or save some more money and get the switch.

The 2ds xl is slightly larger, but a bit lighter, than the DSi XL. I had a n3ds, but I never used the 3d .The 2ds xl came out and I sold my n3ds. Get the 2ds xl, it you can. I'm almost positive your flash card will still work.

Convenient access to something you would rarely be fooling around with anyway isn't worth poorly placed speakers, no 3D, and cheap plastic.

The speaker placement doesn’t matter when you use headphones. Im 6’2”, 150lbs and have large hands with long fingers and the sound reflects off my palms.

"the sound reflects off my palms" ok 1st off what dose that even mean?! 2nd off even if it did "reflects off your palms" it would sound better coming at you directly then "reflecting" off of your sausage fingers

Sound reflects from surfaces. The thicker a surface is the lower the reflecting frequencies can be. Having the sound directly play towards your ears would be ideal though. So you're right about hat part

I suppose I'll chime in on this...

First off, the 2DS line, as mentioned, uses inferior hardware to the 3DS line.

If you compare the actual specs side by side, you'll see that nearly everything in the 2DS is a downgrade compared to its 3DS counterpart. I'd imagine, headphones or not, the sound quality of the n3DS beats that of the n2DS (though I have not experienced this to prove it)

BUT one thing that needs to be addressed before you make a decision is this:

Do you WANT to play 3DS games?

This is the first relevant question. If you're not interested in playing 3DS games, then keep your DSi and enjoy it. The DSi is the pinnacle of DS technology.

If you want to play 3DS games, then I'd go for the n3DS simply because of the enhanced hardware. The SD card isn't hard to access. I keep a case on my 3DS and leave the 2 screws loose. When I need to access the card, I just pop off the case, pry off the bottom and take the card out. Takes about 30 seconds, if that. In addition to that, there is the built in wi-fi management that gives you full access to the card (albeit much slower than direct access).

If you plan on running CFW, someone has even extracted the SD Management software and made it so you can put it directly on your Home screen.

TL: DR--If you want to play 3DS games, get a refurb n3DS for $130-$170, depending on where you go. If you don't want 3DS games, keep your DSi.

a CFW'd N2/3DS can emulate a ton of 8/16 bit home consoles at native resolution and full speed. It can also run GBA games natively at full speed with the slightly inconvenient injection process, although you have to pick between a much tinier native resolution than what you'd see on the DSi XL, and somewhat fuzzy fullscreen (50% more resolution). These are some advantages besides 3DS games that you might enjoy on such a device over your current setup.

For DS games you do have to keep in mind that the upscaling the 3DS does to its slightly higher native resolution is almost useless. So you hold down start when launching the cartridge for a native resolution that is slightly larger than the ds lite when shown on an 3DS XL. Its just a reminder that this is not a replacement for your DSi XL if you really love that size. Even though you can run the supercard on a CFW'd 3DS, the same resolution caveat applies.

I haven't looked in depth, but RAM, CPU, etc. are all the same. The 2DS just misses out on the gimmicky 3D, which I turn off so in my case I wish that I had gotten a new 2DS rather than the n3dsxl...

I came from a nds, and my supercard 2 works in my n3dsxl so it should in the n2ds as well... if not you can get pretty cheap compatible carts that will work plus might do something like ntr boot but I'm not certain if that's useful any longer, it's been a while and I started w/ninjhax... and TBH I hardly use my n3ds... just doesn't seem as fun as the nds back in the day... even though it has some shin mega tensei games... and xenoblade... one day maybe I'll was... er spend the time on them...

...and before the nds I had a dingoo(running dingux plus believe it or not I used it as an FM radio alot as well), so maybe it was hacking more with the dingoo and nds that was more fun as again TBH i've done almost jack with the n3ds other than basic hacks...

The New 2DS XL uses the New 3DS hardware, not regular 3DS.

I have a New 3DS XL but I really like the feel of the New 2DS XL. I probably prefer it over the glossy New 3DS XL and would have no issues getting one if I didn't already have a New 3DS XL. I do not use the 3D feature, however.

I'm not sure how on earth they can be 'too similar'. They have a completely different line-up of games. I would use my DSi XL for DS games because the screen resolution matches.

@cutterjohn Thank you for the clarification! I haven't compared the "new" models side by side. I guess Nintendo decided NOT to screw over people who bought the n2DS. The o2DS compared to the o3DS was a MAJOR difference in hardware!

The regular 2DS has its place, it makes more sense in Japan. I teach primary school kids in Japan and the 2DS is the most popular handheld because they can just be thrown into their schoolbags without a care, the form factor is so sturdy.

OP should get either the New 2DS XL or New 3DS XL, however.

Not really. They had the same specs, just that the 2DS was missing a couple of features.

Of course. 3DS can play all Nintendo handheld games the DSi can plus GBA games (which run on real hardware, something the DSi didn't have) plus it plays 3DS games of course. And there are tons of great 3DS games.
I would suggest a n3DS over a n2DS though.

so n2ds is realisticsally only missing the totally useless facial recognition and '3d'? WTH get the 3ds? The 2ds is just as hackable, has the same key specs, etc AND costs MUCH less...(thanks gimmicky 3D LCD display)...

TBH I wish that I had known the above when I bought the n3dsxl when it arrived, I'd've probably just waited for a n2ds as 3d is permanently OFF on my n3ds and facial recognition? #1 I've NEVER used it and #2 I bet that it barely works and technically probably really shouldn't even be classified as 'facial' 'recognition' as I noticed a lack of nintendo originated papers in any machie vision/learning journals.

[EDIT]
OP, BTW I did NOT vote. IF you spring for one, I think that you can already see that I think that it's silly to get anything other than a n2ds unless you get an incredibly GOOD deal on anything else, e.g. old 2ds/3ds or n3ds. Number two do you think that you'll use the n2/3ds? I thought that I would and realistically beyond hacking mine I;ve hardly touched them even after buying a few hundred worth of RPG carts... which I did finally get around to loading my my hacked console but still NOT really playing other than seeing that everything looked like it was working on the hacked system... I've played more psp/psx games o my vita w/a sd2vita card recently than I've played 3ds in the 5?(damn has it been that long now?) years or so that I've owned it... OTOH the vita was in the same boat until the sd2vita... and I've got some ps3s that are also practically in that same boat... OTOHOTOH I have a gpd win...(1st version, v2 is laughably overpriced for what it is as core y isn't that much of an upgrade over the latest atom arch... I'm waiting for a gpd pocket form factor w/an AMD zen based APU)
